Discoveries from the Mellon Collie Box Set Liner Notes | Poetic Wax

Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness is the 1995 double (or even triple) album by The Smashing Pumpkins. I'll dig into a brief history of the album in this mini documentary and share elements of some of the top songs within. From top singles "Bullet With Butterfly Wings," "Thirty Three," and "1979" to personal favorites like "Porcelina of the Vast Oceans," the history of the album is one that is anything but short. Throughout, you'll see footage of my 2022 vinyl box set, featuring 4 LPs and two booklets of lyrics, narratives, essays, and extensive artwork. I also touch on the artwork itself, from Wisconsin-based artist John Craig.

When I was a kid I was at camp and had no friends. I would just sit in my bed and listen to this album over and over again and I made through the week

Ooof. Honestly, I can relate to a lot of what you mention here, though I didn't really have the equipment back then and those camp experiences were more early nineties than mid. This is the album I'd binge on the bus ride to my high school as a Freshman and/or Sophomore, right around the time it came out.

I can get behind that statement! I actually just listened to The Wall today, and was thinking that Mellon Collie tops that. (Any I pull to cover on the channel get a play before going back on the shelf.)

One of my favorite albums of all time. Gotta love the artwork. If they removed some filler and replaced those songs with the greatest tracks that were cut (like “Pennies”) then it would be my number 1. I own it on vinyl, but unfortunately I bought it before they were rereleased and paid a large amount for it.
