He is back, putting great number for the mavs. I saw some higlights when he was playing for Belgrade in the Euroleague he looked in a good shape, hope he is here for the long term.

Dante's problem was terrible injuries early in his career, so Quin Snyder quickly gave up on him. Meanwhile, Donovan Mitchell appeared and it was all over for Dante in Utah. I watched him live in Belgrade, amazing motor and first step, but most importantly - good character. He didn't come to Europe just to fulfill a contract, nor did he experience Europe as a step back in his career. He had the opportunity to work with the best European coach ever, who put the ball in his hands and after a month it was clear that no one could guard him in Europe. In the end, he was full of confidence and led the team that should have won the Euroleague, but the Partizan players were suspended because of the brawl caused by the Real Madrid players.

I’m Australian and yeah, the hype around Dante seemed a little overblown and suspicious. He also missed the draft workouts too which to me was orchestrated so he wouldn’t have been found out before the draft against seasoned college players.

One thing you didn't mention is that when he was on the Cavs he was going off one night, 25 points off the bench but the Cavs were tanking so he got benched for the rest of the game because it was looking like Exum might win the game for the Cavs. Thats a pretty harsh blow. I think Exum made the same mistake as Thon Maker - rushing into the NBA too early and not being physically or mentally ready. Ben Simmons reluctantly played a year in College and then sat out his first year in the NBA and weirdly enough that allowed him time to develop before playing his first game for the Sixers. Josh Giddey wisely spent a year in the NBL before moving to the NBA. Joe Ingles was also a rookie the same year Exum was a rookie on that Jazz team but he had spent years playing in Australia and Europe and was mentally and physically ready for the NBA despite being way less talented than Exum. If you look at the beginning of Exum's 3rd season of play, 2017-18, he was averaging 8.1 ppg on increased fg%, increased assists to 3.1 and was looking good until he got injured for the third time. I believe if he didn't get injured in the 2017-18 season he could have developed into a top player. But when he got injured for the 3rd time I think time had run out. Jazz needed immediately production, not development and Exum never found another home. Also, Exum and Maker joined bad teams that quickly turned their fortunes around - much quicker than their development and they were both left out in cold as a result. I think guys like Devin Booker, Trae Young, Zach LaVine are lucky. They got to develop and make mistakes on bad teams. When Exum returned from his 1st major injury the Jazz were already back in the playoffs.
@wallacewyche81
@wallacewyche81 Жыл бұрын
Those guys were also fortunate enough to stay healthy and really develop year after year. Rehab really stunts your growth ad a young player. Also, it's worth noting that Exum was playing the wrong postion. He should've played SG and possible SF, it was also a bad scheme fit for his skillset.
@guillemdc
@guillemdc Жыл бұрын
I agree with most of your comment, but I have to disagree with Ingles being "way less talented than Exum". Exum's body may be, but Joe had a special talent to play the game despite his lack of athleticism. Ingle's talents are his shot, court vision and intuition in defense. Exum could hope to compensate them with his: speed, strength and length. Exum's skills are flashier, but Ingles' are maybe even more effective.
@melvinchapman-wfg6355
@melvinchapman-wfg6355 Жыл бұрын
His defense warrants another chance and he was all over his opponent on defense which which can lead to increased injuries and he showed significant improvement in Cleveland on the offense. Give him an opportunity to increase his strength and durability and he is worth the investment because he is 6’6 g/f with his wingspan.

I watched Exum a lot. The analysis of his game as a rookie is spot on. He was extremely tentative on offense and that would lead to slow decision-making. He would often find himself open and in a position to attack, but because he was too hesitant, the defense would recover and he would then make a decision when it was too late, leading to mistakes. His defense really did shine though, and he was so, so quick! He had speed both laterally and in a straight line. His on-ball defense coupled with the emergence of Rudy Gobert on the interior helped transform the Jazz into one of the league's best defenses when both were on the floor. However, both were offensive liabilities on a team that already lacked scoring punch. From there, the injuries sapped whatever remaining potential he had and he was eventually shipped to Cleveland for Jordan Clarkson. You'd love to see him get another chance because he's a really great guy, but he'll need to develop skills that don't just rely on his athleticism, some of which has been lost due to those injuries. Only time will tell.

I remember the Jazz acting like Dante Exum and Rodney Hood were future stars who were going to become franchise players for the team. I even have a t-shirt from Utah's annual open practice in 2014 that had pictures of Exum and Hood on it. Pretty hilarious in retrospect. Good example of how hype doesn't mean anything. Especially considering that a few years later they drafted Donovan Mitchell with absolutely no hype around him, and he actually DID become a star that turned the franchise around.

If exxum comes back to the NBA he would make a great wing/peremiter defender. He could be a bruce bowen or tevor ariza type. But guys like him are great ambassadors for Australian basketball.

The 2014 draft had an insane amount of hype around it. Guys like Wiggins, Exum and Gordon (Marcus Smart also to a degree) were getting so much hype simply based on their physical tools. Then Jabari Parker was seen also seen as surefire player. That draft did give us Jokic and Embiid, Smart did just win defensive player of the year but still, I can recall just how much excitement there was around the first 9 picks of so. So many loved Noah Vonleh too lol

Amazingly he's only (almost exactly) 2 years older than rookie Chris Duarte... he may not be cut out for an 82 game league but he'd offer a lot at the end of an NBA bench.

@KB-qk1ic
@KB-qk1ic 2 жыл бұрын
@@hustleman8797 @Sidney Dean don't misunderstand, I'm not saying it's utah's fault that he couldn't develop. But they did misuse him. Exum should not have been placed at the point, and he needed a true point to play off of. Likely never would have become star like many expected but he still could have become a better role player

As a Jazz fan I fell for all the hype when he came in. I was always super hopeful that he would be our version of Penny Hardaway. I gave up on him the last year the Jazz had him as I finally thought it was time to trade him and they did for Clarkston who's been a lot better for Utah then he was. I don't think he'll find his way back into the NBA due to how much hype he had and how big of a let down it was. I wouldn't mind the Jazz bringing him back as a back up PG to Conley or 3rd string combo guard on a way better contact then the 10 mil he was making before they traded him.

nice! I saw him playing in Barcelona 3 months ago (spanish league), I was impressed by the athleticism but somehow he just couldn't finish very often because he was instantly fouled as soon as he accelerated (in europe the floor is smaller too). incredible athlete but the finishing capabilities lack

he still got potential, just needs to be in the right system. good defender and facilitator, can get to the rim any time he wants (finishing is below average but dunks are still pretty impressive) and has an improved jumpshot. coach synder never let him develop and work through his mistakes, was so frustrating to watch. could see him make an nna comeback especially after his strong olympics and solid play with barcelona, not as a star or anything but a derrick white type of guy who'll contribute on both ends.
