After the incredible effect that the Boosterplug had on my Versys 650, I HAD to get one for the FZ1-N and see if it could smooth out the jerky fuelling and make the bike more enjoyable to ride.

New subscriber here. I have a Moto Guzzi California 1400 Custom. It was a mess. Fitted booster plug and some Lafranconi pipes and it’s superb now. You can actually ride it when it’s cold without fear. Before it was horrific when cold (open loop) and only eased up when closed loop (O2 sensors) were activated (engine hot). Now it’s wonderful when cold and even better when hot. I’m sure there are still occasions when it’s not perfect, but it’s a big Italian V-twin and that’s called character. Thanks Andy.

Funny how sometimes things come toghether in a perfect manner. I just installed a full Arrow Thunder exhaust system on my 2017 Yamaha MT09 Tracer (Bought it last year based on your review of the bike!!) and a colleague of mine just encouraged me to install the Booster Plug. It´s a danish product and he knows some bike shop owners here in Denmark who use the product instead of the whole dyno power commander thing. It sounded very interesting and of course I wanted to look it up to read/watch some reviews of the product. Extremely happy to see that you´ve had some experince with the plug (that´s what she said) and I must say that now I won´t hesitate to add the thing to my motorcycle! (Such is the power of your influence!) But it also made me think how, when you go through videos/posts, (especially when it is about technical stuff) you have a tendency to mostly pay attention to the thing/subject that is present in your mind, at the time you watch the video. I have watched all your vids and I didn´t remember about the Booster Plug until I searched for it. Well that´s enough rambling. Thank you so much for your Videos. BTW I think maybe Patreon Andy Man Cam t-shirts might be in order soon??!! :D

Hi and thanks for making me discover that tech part! Bought one for My FZ1 S 2007 and it changed radically the bike under 5000 rpm : lot smoother and responsive throttle as well as an engine break much more loose (which however isn't great on track as it forces you to (front) brake harder = less balanced breaking) .But as they say, why not pissing on the Power commander.

I mounted a booster plug on my K1200S last year and was very satisfied with the smoother throttle response and the improved gearing. But as time and miles went by I felt the bike got more and more jerky. I tried to disconnect the booster plug and there was no longer any difference. I reconnected it, nothing. A bmw mechanic I spoke to believed the bike's computer would adapt to the booster plug and gradually go back to the lean settings. I still have the plug fitted but it doesn't do anything anymore.

@MFP2241

Well... After three months it would be interesting to know what actually happened with your Booster Plug. My ultimate guess is it simply stopped working. Actually that's also an undeniable possibility. On the oher hand, if your bike has a learning ECU, common behavior is that it ends up accommodating for changes made on exhaust or induction systems, not rejecting them after a while; unless BMW have tricked their ECU programming to reject instead of accomodate, but then there's a Booster Plug people mistake, since they overlooked such an important fact, which is hard but not impossible to assume. For non learning ECU, well, Booster Plug is supposed to equally do it's tricking job with no learning process involved nor required, as far as I know.

OK, I've read the whole book, and I am skeptical that it oversimplifies bike fuel injection. (But it does explain the O2 sensor in greater detail than what I've previously read.) In particular it only talks about mapping in terms of what is commonly called "Alpha-N". I have read previously that bikes usually use two different maps, (the other is called "Speed-Density), and switch from one to the other based on some threshold of throttle opening. In fact I even recently stumbled across a statement on one of Yamaha's own websites that specified that threshold for a particular model, (but I forgot to save the link). Take a read through this: www.motorcyclecruiser.com/how-electronic-fuel-injection-efi-works-how-to (but bear in mind this was written in 2009)

I watched you Alpine tour video (BTW. watching the episode with Bernardino pass was like a deja vu for me, when I did my video clip of my first trip in 2016 on my fazer, I used many exactly the same scenes!) and noticing you were riding an FZ1 that reminded me how jerky my FZ6 was (took a lot of fun away, the snatch was so terrible, going through hairpins, especially downhill was almost a chore) and to some extent it's smilar in my MT09 tracer. anyhow, I was impressed how smooth and confident you were cornering those hairpins and started wonderding if you had any of those issues, so instead of asking in comment section I figured I'd browse through your videos to see if you had that covered...and here I am! :) So, still, impressive how well you manage to corner with the yahama twitch in place! What I found is helping me a tonne is trail braking. If performed correctly, no twich throuout a corner (on a tracer, FZ6 was so bad I could not get around it). Also, DIY throttle cam mod helps a bit (you might try it yourself). It is amazing how much more joy riding gives when you have no twitch. It's literally like night and day. What I also noticed is that my bike behaves much better at some altitudes (like 1500m asl it gets much smoother on throttle reaction), so probably the MAP sensor has a lot do do with the fueling as well. Anyhow. It was fun to watch your Alpine series, I'm off to the Alps in a month after 2 years from my last visit there :) Can't wait!
@AndyManCam
@AndyManCam 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Eric, thanks very much for watching and very nice of you to compliment my attempts at beating the twitch!! I tried allsorts of tricks to get around it. This Boosterplug really helped below 4500rpm and also upping the CO setting inside the dash diagnostic area (not sure if you have that on your Tracer, I’m sure your forums could tell you). Above 4500 i tried a cheap trick with diodes wired in with the map sensor to trick the ECU somehow, though I think any effect there was psychological so i took it off!! Ultimately I just got the hang of cornering in lower gears than I really wanted to so that I could avoid the 4500+ dreaded fuel cut. It seems that the only way to truly unleash your bike is to get the ECU flashed and have the fuel cut switched off! Have a great time in the Alps mate, I’m desperate to get back there! Won’t be happening this year though 😩
@plllot9713
@plllot9713 5 жыл бұрын
@@AndyManCam I bingewatched your Alpine trip, now I'm up to the Croatia trip vids (just seen you dropping the bike!). I'm really enjoying the videos :) For me, the CO adjustment did nothing, both in Fazer and Tracer. I got my ECU flashed with the decel cutoff switched off but it didn't help too much. I think it needs complete remap to get rid of the snatch completely. what I'm afraid is happening even with things like boosterplug or O2 plug mod is that it still gets overriden by long term fuel trims by the ECU. so initially you might feel the difference, but over time the ECU will fight against it. the throttle tamer like throttle cam mod did the most for me I think. still, the snatch in the tracer isn't as bad as it used to be in the fazer. that was the main reason I got rid of the FZ6 (and I had some thoughts about selling the tracer too but again, if it wasn't for the snatch it's just a perfect bike). it was terrible in that only matter. other than that, perfect bike. in tracer, if throttle operated very precisely, no snatch, but that requires a lot of effort. so yeah. either a proper remap, but I mean a proper one by someone who actually worked it out and know what they're doing as turning off decel cutoff won't sort it, or perfectioning trail braking :) Thanks, fingers crossed the weather will be good :) you, even being in the northern Germany have it a bit easier getting there than us, staying in the UK at least not having to spend money on the ferries/trains ;) I'm often wondering, if I lived let's say 300 miles away from Alps, that would be just darn heaven. I thing I'd be there 4 times a year at least ;) All the best mate!
@AndyManCam
@AndyManCam 5 жыл бұрын
Living within 1 tank full of fuel from the Alps would be both heaven and a REAL problem for me!! I'd constantly be either there, or thinking about being there! Like a junkie living down the road from his dealer! :D Yeah I think a complete remap is definitely the best way. I got the FTECU kit and it allows me to sideload Powercommander maps into the ECU. I found a bunch of maps from similarly specced bikes on the FZ1 forums and tweaked them until the butt dyno was happy. It seems that the biggest difference in terms of the snatch, was adding fuel in the 0% throttle area, so that the engine breaking is reduced and the off-on is therefore not so severe.

Most modern biks are closed loop controlled. --> fuelling is ajusted based on what the ECU measures in the exhaust. The ECU will adjust fuel trims and correct for a faulty temperature signal. I would be surprised if this would work in the long term.
@AndyManCam
@AndyManCam 4 жыл бұрын
By being a smart arse, you’ve actually explained the reason why it DOES work. As i explained in the video. 🤦🏻‍♂️. The boosterplug makes adjustments during small throttle movements, relying on the fact that the closed loop system is not instant. Once steady throttle is achieved, the closed loop system catches up and corrects the fueling based on what the O2 Sensor is Reading in the exhaust fumes. Then when the throttle is moved again, the cycle repeats. It’s a short term and constantly changing state of affairs, and not simply 6% extra fuel the whole time. It worked on my bike for 2 years already.
@ApaX1981
@ApaX1981 4 жыл бұрын
@@AndyManCam just saying that I would be surprised if it works on the long term. The computer has long term and short-term fuel trims. I have done the experiment on my car by changing the resistance of the incoming air sensor. The result is that, after about half a tank of fuel, the short-term fuel trim is bouncing around zero and the long-term is -10%. It will work, untill the ecu catches up. But let me ask the question: what is stopping the ecu from correcting the long-term fuel trim?
@AndyManCam
@AndyManCam 4 жыл бұрын
You’re not getting it. The ECU adjusting the fuel trims is part of this thing working. The maps in the ECU don’t change and they aren’t adjusted. They’re just temporarily and short term tricked into accessing different areas of the map.
@ApaX1981
@ApaX1981 4 жыл бұрын
@@AndyManCam your wrong about that. Long term fuel adjustment is most certainly part of the adjustment mechanism of the ECU. I found a BMW forum where they measured the boosterplug with a wideband lambda sensor. After full ECU rest and boosterplug install: Air fuel ratio is 12.1. After 30 minutes the air fuel ratio is back at target of 13.8. And this is measured in open loop! forums.bmwmoa.org/showthread.php?56990-2004-R1150RT-Wideband-O2-Sensors&p=916282&viewfull=1#post916282 The only thing that will work is something that hacks the feedback loop. the rest is doomed to be corrected by the ECU.

+Rhönschrat That's a grey area. I would imagine that all would be fine as they check emissions at steady RPM. At which point the O2 sensor should take over and the bike will run as stock. I had wondered why you thought you needed the Boosterplug on the Versys, but then I recently discovered something: Your Versys 650 is not the same as mine. Mine (2008 & 2009) does not have the O2 sensor which the Euro version has. So w/o an O2 sensor, the US version is obviously running purely in open-loop mode, while the Euro version must be running in closed-loop at least part of the time.

@AndyManCam
@AndyManCam 4 жыл бұрын
With regards to this one in particular, no. Mainly because it’s not a performance upgrade, as the Power of the bike isn’t affected. Otherwise I’ve also never mentioned any Upgrades to the insurance. In germany I’m pretty sure that the rule of thumb is that as long as the peak power of the bike isn’t increased by more than 10%, it doesn’t matter to the insurance company. Of course all add ons have to be 100% road legal and suited to the bike (often with relevant paperwork) otherwise that would potentially affect the insurance cover.

That sounds like a very reasonable request! The thing is, it would be a relatively quick video! I fitted it and then simply forgot about it. The effect it had on the fuelling of the bike is still the same and my fuel economy is not at all affected! Unless I get any kind of ECU reflash work done, it'll be staying exactly where it is!

I'm sure it would help a little bit, but sadly not all the time as that's not how this gadget works. The only real way to fix lean running would be to get a tune up and ECU flash to correct your fuelling.

Hey buddy first of all love your videos...I live in mumbai India and own a 2012 white fz1 here which is currently running a K&N replacement filter and a two brothers racing carbon fibre slip on exhaust . As the ambient air temperature here usually fluctuates between 30 to 40 degrees celcius, do you reckon the booster plug will be as effective on my fz1 as it is on yours ? Would really appreciate a reply. Thanks . Warm regards . And ride safe .🤙🤙

+Cornish_ Boy Sure it does, and more. But it also costs 3 times as much and either means sending your ECU away or booking in dyno time. BP is not complete, but is quicker, easier, cheaper and I actually don't want any more power. 140bhp at the back wheel is already plenty thanks!

+Cornish_ Boy Sadly it's (as ever) a little more complicated here. The flasher (tee hee) has to be certified otherwise the ECU is then deemed illegal and therefore the bike is no longer roadworthy. how on gawd's green earth is fooling your ecu into thinking it's 20 degrees F cooler outside is going to improve shifting?
@AndyManCam
@AndyManCam 6 жыл бұрын
+m.w. Adams Engine braking is much softer. This is because more fuel is still being chucked into the cylinders on deceleration rather than just cutting it all together. This also means that when you quickly chop the throttle to shift, the revs don't instantly drop. Effectively allowing you to 'catch' the next gear quickly and better match the revs to where the next gear ideally wants to start pulling.
@rhetericalpha

That sensor is lying to the computer. It's bypassing the factory senor and that sensor on the new pigtail harness is in open air (colder air) which is more dense so the computer sees the false air temp and adds more fuel. It's cute that his sticker shows it pushing on power commander when booster plug is a mock off device. They have those for cars and it does the same thing. All fun and games until you have a super hot day or a very cold day
@AndyManCam
@AndyManCam 6 жыл бұрын
Erm... that's entirely the whole point of it! I've been out on hot days, cold days and both at altitude. Bike runs just perfect, better than ever at stock setup and no change in power or fuel economy. 👌
@HalfdeadRider
@HalfdeadRider 5 жыл бұрын
Yea as AMC explained, it only effects fueling when giving it throttle and even if the ECU did not adjust to stock settings at a cruise it would not effect heat of the engine. The cooling system and air circulation regulates that and a little extra fueling will not effect the combustion heat a noticeable amount and the cooling system is capable of such an extremely small change. The sensor the unit uses for the ambient air temp is just to make sure the device adjusts as accurately as possible, other similar products just don't do that and probably messes up the fueling. It's a great thing really, especially as these bikes (maybe more so with some than others), run lean from factory settings. If money is no issue just have the ECU custom tuned for best results all round.

shall get one for the mt10 any idea do performance air filter and decat exhaust affect the booster plug?
@AndyManCam
@AndyManCam 4 жыл бұрын
In my non expert opinion, I'd say that the filter and decat will affect the airflow. This in turn will affect how your O2 sensor tells the ECU to modify the mix. This in turn is very lightly affected by the booster plug, so you might be OK. Sadly the Boosterplug only really deals with small throttle openings and changing throttle position. So for cruising and high speed, the Boosterplug is no longer part of the equation. This means that the only way to really get things running at their best is on a Dyno. That said, you could try it and keep an eye on your spark plug condition to see if you're running lean. Could be that the ECU will take up the slack automatically.

More fuel actually has the exact opposite effect. Too little fuel is what causes engines to run hot. It also causes engines to run rough as the lean mix can tend to pre-detonate. So more fuel actually helps to smooth things out too.

@@AndyManCam yeah you're right, I just mixed up rich and lean sorry. I remember running it to rich can; - make it harder to pass an MOT due to the extra unburnt fuel/ carbon monoxide being thrown out of the back - it can smell more - bad fuel but you did touch on this - loss in power, this could be why you have a smoother running bike as there is a drop in power - poor idle, your engine didn't seem to run smooth from listening to the vid - clogged parts due to unburnt fuel, this could be expensive on replacing a cat for the all important not in England. Sorry, I haven't said all this to cause an argument I just want those who don't know to be aware, especially with older vehicles and people buying bikes with this stuff done to them
@AndyManCam

From the factory standard fueling of any electric fuel injected bike, there is pretty much no chance that this gadget will richen the mix enough to do any of that. It’s a short lived change of about 6% and is straight away counteracted by the O2 sensor and ECU. It’s intended only to give a tiny bit more fuel during small throttle movements. Not a continuous increase of fuel. I’ve not even noticed an increase in fuel consumption over many thousands of miles, so small is the difference. Also there are countless videos on the tubes outlining how there is actually a relatively wide envelope within which the air/fuel mix has almost no effect on power. It simply affects how hot/cool, smooth/rough the engine runs. No way that the BP is operating anywhere near the realms of increasing or decreasing power.
