What a beautiful piece and such a gorgeous colour! I'm not a fan of purple, old horror movie coffin linings are to blame, but this looks quite iridescent, bordering on silver as much as purple.. I guess that's why it's called violet :))) 💜

I have watched this video several times over the past couple of months. The design is simple and lovely. Is there any problem with the resin adhering to the smooth planed surface of the wood? I wonder if drilling a few holes around the perimeter of the wood cylinder allowing the resin to have some foundation in the wood if that would ensure adherence?
@AndyPhillipWoodturning6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Bill .. The resin is still stuck great to the wood I just tried to pull it off .. I had a few problems with polyester resin not sticking very well to wood but no problems with epoxy or polyurethane .. cheers

Andy Phillip Thanks Andy. My grandson is a Boy Scout and his scout leader asked if I could make a "totem" to mark his place during meetings. A design like this would be perfect. Very nice. I've had trouble finding acrylic or epoxy that advertises it will do this type of work. Everyone retailer I've contacted said their product only good for 1/8 inch at a time. Do you have stateside recommendations?
@AndyPhillipWoodturning7 жыл бұрын
Thanks .. I use epoxy resin and I think it recommends no more than 12mm or so in depth .. I've got a video on my channel where it did go wrong it has a exothermic reaction and pretty much boils !! I just got away with this piece but I think it effected the colour .. lm in the uk but from what I've seen alumilite is the resin mostly used for this type of thing it's polyurethane based resin and I'm pretty sure you would need to use it with a pressure pot as it goes off fast .. it's just started to become available in the uk so I will be trying it soon ..thanks. . Heath knuckles s channel would be a great one to check out he does awsome work with deep pours .. and zach Higgins more pen size stuff but great info about resins .. hope that's some help 👍

it is dope... i just dont understand why all of these videos keep cutting... it was so awesome looking before he cut the top off. maybe its the sped up video, i just cant see what they se. but man, not just this one...ITS DOPE, HONESTLY, but at least 10 of the last 12 i seen of these from as many different artists do the same thing... as soon as it looks great, they cut off the base, then do something to the shape after its look great, to me of course.... but im an idiot, i was just hoping someone with an eye for design could help me understand if thats the ways its supposed to go?

Assuming normal use (with water) how to protect the wood in the hole left by the central pvc pipe?
@AndyPhillipWoodturning7 жыл бұрын
Normal use with wooden vessels doesn't usually involve water .. you can hollow out for a glass tube to drop in but these are bud vases more for cuttings or dry flowers .etc ..cheers
@Daniel-qn2mc7 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your quick response, the idea of inserting a glass tube is interesting, however the top of the tube to be truncated, I do not see how. If I want to put water in this vase, it is to be able to put a fresh cut pink. And if I fill the hole in the wood with epoxy resin? ...

It helps to use a pressure pot .. but I did quite a bit without one .. just make sure its a slow set epoxy,don't pour to much at once and give it a quick blast with a heat gun or small blow torch , I also found using pearlex or mica powders helps but it is more hit and miss whether it will be a success ..cheers Andy
