Ah... You asked for suggestions for manufacturers for future projects. OK then: 1) A really nice, DETAILED 1/72 scale example of the Type XXI U-Boat, with photo etch, etc. Shouldn't be too difficult to produce, and will fill an empty niche in EVERY chronological display of WWII U-Boats. Please Andy, try to talk one of the better kit producers into doing this! And again, thanks for all you do! Hope to visit your store one day and meet you.

Hi Andy, greetings from Sydney! As a veteran of the 1/72 Revell Type 1Xc, Type 1Xc/40 & GATO Class US Naval WWII (and the 1/72 Flower Class Corvette - an ABSOLUTE beast, which tested every skill I possess after 50 years of assembling & scratch building, at every stage of assembly and is virtually scratch - built above the waterline! - a 2 year project LOL!)... FYI... the "Conning tower is a separate pressure - vessel above the pressure - hull & is housed inside the SAIL - the name given, universally to what most folks call the" Con' "... anyhow, I love your easy and very cool headed attitude to model - making... my usual forte is large scale - 1/48 & 1/32 Warbird's... but I love ship's and couldn't resist the Revell Submarines when they became, very, briefly available... kindest regards :)

Ships are my favorite subject to build. I wish to see more plastic models of civillian ships, specifically workships like tugs, offshore support vessels, icebreakers, fishing ships and stuff like that. Those kinds of models are plenty to be found in wooden kit form or from RC based companies, but very few made in smaller scale plastic kits.
@carmium3 жыл бұрын
I think someone could sell a ton of kits by making 1/87 and 1/160 scale models that would double as HO and N scale model railway accessories. Imagine a Liberty or Victory ship in N. The former's 33" length in N isn't out of beyond practicality, and regular ship modellers would snap them up as well as train buffs! And, as you say, Rand, tugs and fishboats would be naturals, as well as little coastal cargo ships and railcar ferries. Hit two markets with one stone!

The black panel liner was a great idea. It really made the model pop. But you got to remember one thing about a U-boat. The crew would not allow the U-boat to get rusty. That was their home in the middle of the ocean. If rust got too bad under one of the ribbits. It would start to leak seawater. The upkeep of the U-boat was done vigorously and religiously when it was in port. They were always doing paint work on the U-boat. I know you like to weather things but on a U-boat. There was no rust. Even at sea the crew would paint over any scratches. That way, they could eliminate rust before it started. But everything else on the U-boat looks fantastic.

I love how the superstructure pieces have all those little pins and frames to line up everything perfectly without too much effort. I have just finished building Trumpeter 1/350 Arleigh Burke kit and pretty much all of its superstructure is built from flat side and top pieces to be glued together without any supporting pins, frames or anything. It is like building a house from cards while preserving a perfect geometry of the superstructure that doesn't even have a right angle anywhere. That's the difference between well designed and crappy kit.

Andy, another tip on weathering I found successful when I build an x boat. Gloss up the area below the water level and where water splashes were above, then satin Matt above. It creates the illusion of the boat being in the water, even when on the stand. Also added some greening on the bronze parts and even a bit of an algae line. Made for a effective display.

As an avid model maker /assembler /scratch - builder of 58 years of age, my thing is aircraft - '48 /' 32nd scale. As a break and as a ship lover, I've done the Revell 1/72 Flower Class Corvette - almost entirely scratch - built above deck and I've kit - bashed a few Airfix kits for weapons (40mm Bofors, etc) - here's a kit that challenged every ounce of skill and patience I have at every step and sub - assembly - 2 years to build (thanks Revell!) - a complete retooling or... a 1/72 Castle Class Frigate would be beautiful and would sell. Om the flip - "side of that, Revell have already presented us with the Type IXc-40 (Snorkel equipped) U190, the IXc U505 (Same basic kit) - both a beautiful build which I have, and the massive 1320mm US Navy Gato Fleet Class Submarine... another absolute gem to build... these kits all constantly sell - out and are massively catered for with aftermarket goodies... (Revell also do the Type VIIc - early and late war versions)... these kits are hard to come by as it is, so other manufacturers looking for a good, solid seller world do well to put out this type of ship - convoy escorts like the Flower & Castle Class are large'ish but not prohibitively big and are so popular - this type, the US Navy Fletcher Class Destroyer - in 1/72 scale are the stuff of ship - modellers dream's... Get in the ear of some of the manufacturers you have a working relationship with and let them know what people would love to buy to build! Kind regards from Sydney :)

Hi Andy, I just started this kit, as you said it fits perfectly, my copy came with a great book on these boats by the guys who produced the kit so loads of info about how they really looked in service. The rigging instructions look pretty difficult , the boat will be great looking if I manage to get it right, the WW1 boats only dived to torpedo or get out of trouble and the petrol engines must have half gassed the crew with it closed up, very nice video, especially the painting data, I always enjoy your stuff, regards John, England.

Hi Andy, just a "lurker" here but love your videos! Subscribed! I am a 1/35 WWII armor (and sometimes 1/32 aircraft) modeler, who is also building an N-scale model RR based on WWII Germany. One of the features on it will be a "mini" (as "mini" as possible, lol) Kriegshafen where I'll have a small (based on the one in Bergen) U-Boat bunker. I have 3 of the Revell 1/144 VIIC/41 subs, (1/144 being reasonably close to 1/160 N-scale, for me at least) and one XXI. In addition to a 1/144 Type IX U-boat, would love to see one or more types of 1/144 Schnellboot, Räumboot, Vorpostenboot, Sperrbrecher, even an aux cruiser like the Komet or Atlantis in 1/144 would be awesome. Realizing that a model company must expect to price, and sell enough, to see a profit, the topics must be popular enough to justify, so, I currently plan to do a lot of scratchbuilding, but, who knows, maybe more people would be interested in these? Anyway, thank you! Keep up the good work!

Nice model, Andy. Just for accuracy, a boat’s flag pole is known (in English) as a “Jack Staff”, and the flag is a Jack, as in the Union Jack. The Jack Staff rigging lines are known as “Jack Stays”. Sailing ships only had two ropes: the anchor rope and the bell rope. All the other cordage was either running lines or rigging lines. The rigging lines were called stays, and the running lines were called halyards. You also had rat lines for climbing the masts. Just to make it more complicated, each line was named for its purpose and/or position in life. On top of that, the sails had reefing lines, which were used for reefing (shortening) the sails around the yards (spars), and that is where the reef knot comes in.

Love your videos Andy, a small but rather important item regarding the small ports on the side and the "toe holes" in the conningtower. These do usually have ruststreakes from them this is a common sight on all older subs WW2 and WW1 one of the reasons is that its hard to do maintenance in those areas so usually they had only paint that was from the building process, and the quality of paints and primaers at that time can not be compared with todays paintsystems, keep up the good work and yea i would like to see a diorama with this boat.
