Beautiful plants on the patio pond and all of the goldfish are adorable. The water lilies that have the red are really good looking plants. The patio looks great the way that you framed it with the wood it looks very natural and you are definitely right about the green water and clear water debate, the best way to know is to test your water for ammonia, nitrites and nitrates. Great job Andy.

What a cracking pond Andy and great to see that you've achieved the perfect set up without the need of expensive mechanical filters, just used nature to provide the perfect habitat for your goldfish, full of admiration for you mate. I've kind of started out like you, a small pond made from a half whisky barrel with a couple of marginal plants and a dwarf lily plus three goldfish, sadly one died though due to lack of oxygen. There was oxygenating plants in the bottom but not established enough to provide what they needed, a real shame but a learning curve. So I made a bog filter using a 25ltr tub full with clay balls and added an air pump, that did the trick, remaining 2 fish are happy and the water crystal clear, or shall I say, "Gin clear" I'm now 75% near completing my new raised pond made from sleepers, 2.4 x 1.2 x 0.6 meters in size and using a 240ltr wheelie bin for the bog filter, and all for just two goldfish, Elvis and Motley, yes my wife did name them 😀 As an engineer I think that after watching your video I've gone and done the thing all engineers do, and that is OVER engineer my new pond, sometimes simplicity is the best way forward and you are certainly the ambassador for natural ponds 🐠🐠🐠🐠

You shouldn't need to very often if you keep the fish stock light. The more fish you have the worse the algae will be usually. If it doesn't rain much for a long time you may need to do water changes.
@valerievenn7514
@valerievenn7514 2 жыл бұрын
@@BlatentlyFakeName I have had a prefab pond about this size with 12 medium sized goldfish (I know that is too many but they were rescued when much smaller and I haven't the heart to give them away). I use the pond water to water my pot plants - the nitrates caused by the fish poo feeds the plants and have a hosepipe running from the guttering downpipe to the pond to keep it topped up with rainwater. The only time I add water is if the level falls too low during summer. With plenty of pond oxygenator plants it keeps it clear. The fish seem happy and so do the newts although the baby newts tend to end up as fish food.

The solar ones are good on a very sunny day as they produce a lot of bubbles but you know how our British weather is! So I wouldn’t rely on it as a sole means of air into your pond, but like I say when it’s sunny it’s very very good.
