That's the absolute genius of this episode emotion wise. The fact that they used Doyle's video for straight up comedy in the beginning and them watching it at the end after he died is just absolutely heart wrenching. First soldier down.

Doyle wasn't supposed to die this early but they had to kill him off because of Glenn Quinn's heroin addiction. He died of an overdose in 2002.

Danyl Young Not really. Glenn Quinn was difficult to work with and they had to fire him. Angel co-creator David Greenwalt went into greater detail about it in the Nerdist Writers Panel #183: Mutant Enemy Writers Room Reunion podcast.

Ah yes, the infamous Whedon warning shot. Every Whedon show has that one defining moment when the show's tone and stakes are established. Sometimes it comes latter sometimes earlier but its always there. For Buffy it was Surprise and Innocence two parter in season two. For Angel it was Hero. Even years after, this still hurts, especially knowing the dark messed up things in the actor's life that led to Doyle leaving...

Harry Dresden What led to Doyle leaving was Whedon and Greenwalt realised the character was as brooding as Angel and didn't think it worked well having basically two of the same character. It was during season 4 time that Glenn died.

Danyl Young Doyle's actor was heavy into drug abuse and alcohol. It became hard to work with him and he would start to not show up to filming. So a hard decision was made to write Doyle off the show. Since Whedon always planned do have a huge death in S1 to set up the tone, Doyle fit the bill.

Your face said it all. I mean we all went through that. The video Doyle and Cordy recorded, it's the same image, the same video. The difference between the first time we see it and the second is overwhelming. The realization that he was talking about himself all along, the feeling of guilt for laughing the fist time...... Doyle's death still hits me every single time for multiple reason. I personally like the character very much and even though the actor ( Glenn Quinn ) Had addiction problems during his time on the show. it wasn't visible on screen. A true professional.He also was good friends with David Boreanaz in real life. Sad that he had to leave the show even more sad that the actor himself died not long later. ''Is that it? I'm i done?'' I was SO pissed when Doyle died. Yeah, his own personal demons (see what I did there?) were the cause of him being killed off, his character was fantastic and super likeable.

That's not the reason why he got killed off. But one of the little lies told to hide the fact that Glenn Quinn had addiction problems. He would show up to work late or drunk and that's the reason why they killed of Glenn because the problems in his personal life started to effect his professional one. So in the aftermath of Doyle's death one or two reasons for his departure was being thrown around. One was that two brooding Irish guys was overkill , the other reason mostly told by Whedon himself was that he always intended to kill of Doyle to set the tone of the series. But neither of these were the actual truth.

Classic misinformation campaign. You don't stomp on someone while they are down. They way that I heard it was that they had always intended to kill someone off (a very Joss thing to do) at some point, but the real life issues with Quinn rather made their decision easier, and executed sooner than was originally planned.

Great episode and reaction. This first 9 episodes in retrospect play like an extended prologue, the story of how Angel and Cordy ended up as friends. Close friends, who share grief no one else in the world understands, because nobody else was close to Doyle. Joss Whedon has always maintained that he planned on killing Doyle off from the beginning, but the rumor has always been that Whedon and the studio decided to write Glenn Quinn out because his heroin addiction was worsening. He died of an overdose only a few years later, while the show was still on the air. RIP to him.

I'm already at the time 2:01 and had to pause it because I remembered what the episode was about once I started watching it. And at that time stamp is when it ALL came flooding back to me and now I'm freaking sad. I still remember Cordy and Angel watching the recording that he did earlier, just to see and hear him one last time. It just saddens me more because the actor did pass away. But the even sadder part is that there were talks about bringing his character back but the actor had died before he even got to hear any ideas for how his character would be brought back. "When the chips are down and you're at the end of your rope, you need someone that you can count on. And that's what you'll find here. Someone who'll go all the way. Who'll protect you, no matter what. So don't lose hope. Come on over to our offices and you'll see that there's still heroes in this world." And it's just tears coming down my face. RIP Glenn Quinn. I remember watching this ep live and just a wreck afterwards.... the closing lines on the "commercial" always get me... and like some have mentioned that how sad that the real life demons in Glenn Quinn's life led to this even though you never saw it onscreen. RIP Doyle/Glenn.

Shame about Glenn. Just never could shake his demons (no pun intended). Fired because of his addiction issues and died, homeless, of a heroin overdose just months after leaving the show. Watching this again it's amazing we can't really see anything wrong on the surface of the man. Just goes to show, you never know how someone else might be hurting. R.I.P.

You'll probably never see this being two years later and all but about the basketball thing. It probably isn't something you'd pick up on as an Australian but as an American "yah and we're all good at basketball too" is a reference to the stereotype that all black people are good at basketball. They were discussing stereotypes and that is one that gets repeated a lot, that same line is in a lot of TV and film.

The Doyle and Cordi ship is my favorite ship in all of ships. Doyle was my favorite as a kid and it was the first experience I had with a lead character dying so soon into a series.

12:23 Because the Scourge weren't proper pure demons. Pure demons were the ones who'd try to get out of the Hellmouth every time it opened in Buffy or the snake demon the mayor turned into. The Scourge were half demons who hated themselves for not being pure so they took it out on anyone who wasn't pure demon.

I always thought the silhouette looked nothing like Doyle, I always thought it was supposed to be David Boreanez's stunt double. But now after you said it looked like Doyle I'm more inclined to think it actually was Doyle's actor Glenn Quinn in that shot (also real life sad note. Glenn Quinn did die irl of a drug overdose which is sad. The show Roesanne just rebooted their show and he was part of that cast too, they did a tribute to him in their last episode of the reboot) Anyone else think Cordelia could have just said Doyle had a headache rather than pretend to play charades? I'm a huge basketball fan so whenever i hear the word basketball come out of anyone's mouth i get irrationally excited. Football not so much. And yeah makeup and costumes get reused in the Buffyverse, you might see some certain makeup parts show up repeatedly throughout the show. It's a fun little easter egg game to play while watching. I do it all the time. As for why they let Angel join, they seemed to admit that a "halfbreed who kills other halfbreeds" is interesting. They probably thought they could use him in some way as propaganda or something The reason I think so many people found Doyle's death shocking is because honestly who kills off characters on episode 9? No one. So obviously having him die here was crazy. But still well done. You never expect to see someone melt like that as their death. And the video at the end just adds so much to it. Nothing more sad than seeing a dead person living for some reason. This episode is ripe with plot holes, empty LA streets, pureblood demons are supposed to be bigger, etc etc etc but ultimately the episode shows how people are willing to forgive plot details if the overall story is good. If the overall story of an episode is bad, people start getting nickpicky about details. Technically the Natzi's were defeated by throwing Doyle at them and popping, so you weren't wrong about that :) I just want demon Brad Pitt to come in and say he's good at killing Natzi's Also just curious about a couple things,1. At roughly how long does it take for videos to get blocked? I wanna know how long i should wait before it's safe to comment on a video lol 2. At what moment were you sure Doyle was gonna die?

It really depends. Some videos are blocked immediately, some blocked after hours, some videos I uploaded 2 months ago are being blocked. I thought they'd get him out of it but it sad sad to see :(

It's totally Mike Massa, Angel's stunt double. If you watch these shows enough, you can recognize him on sight. He's a bit shorter, smaller, more defined back muscles, much smaller neck (David has a thick football jock body), his ears stand out a bit and weighs less (more noticeable in later seasons when David put on a few pounds). It probably looked fine when everyone had CRT televisions in standard def., but it's certainly noticeable now. SMG's first stunt double Sophia Crawford is also really noticeable because Buffy seemingly puts on her "fighting boobs". Sophia isn't quite as skinny (had to quit because of SMG's extreme weight loss) and had much bigger boobs. Spike's stunt double wears a really terrible orangey wig.

All these years later, and I still get angry (SUPER angry!) when Doyle dies. A fantastic and likeable character who's own personal inner demons caused his downfall. While the imagery is way heavy-handed in this episode, the payoff at the end (however angry it makes me) still makes this episode an emotional win. "Is that it? Am I done?" R.I.P. Glenn Quinn.

@@DanY-gx2dv No, the show runners have long since gone on record that he was written off because of his drug problem; it was causing serious delays in the production schedule and other issues that became untenable. They even talk about how it wasn't an easy decision to make, because Glenn became good friends with David, as well as Christian Kane, who played Lindsey; Christian and David were already friends before the series and there was a lot of concern about how David would respond to firing Glenn, but eventually they had no choice.

Also did you recognize the name Sean Gunn(Kraglin, from GOTG) during the opening credits? He plays Lucas, the guy from the Flashback that tells Doyle they share a common enemy.

Two soul-crushing (punintentional) episodes in a row. Glenn was written out because the writers realised his character was too similar to Angel's, not because of personal issues.

That's not true at all. The writers made a lot of excuses before it came out what Glenn Quinn's problems were. It actually took a while for his cause of death to be stated publicly, as the family kept it quiet for a few years. He died of a heroin overdose on a friend's couch. Mutant Enemy writers have since come out and said that it was his drug problems that got him fired and not all the excuses about Joss wanting a fake-out main character who dies (as Jesse was intended, but they couldn't afford two versions of the credits then) or the too-similar crap that was also bogus. Glenn was actually very close to David Boreanaz and Christian Kane (Lindsey), but he was being caught doing drugs on set by crew, not showing up on time and not always knowing his lines. Doyle never would have been written off if it weren't for Glenn's personal problems. He was actually a character replacement for Whistler due to Max Perlich's unavailability. The original City of... draft script was written for Whistler. Joss knew Glenn from when he played Mark Healy on Roseanne (Joss wrote for the show).
