I think one of my favorite things in Sanctuary is David Boreanaz' facial acting in that last confrontation with Buffy.... when she brings up her new boyfriend, you can just feel the hurt on his face - especially remembering that he still carries the memory of their day/night together during the events of "I Will Remember You"... he knows what they could have had, what they actually did have together, and that she can't possibly know how much harder her "what's different is that I trust him" would hit.
@ernesthakey33962 ай бұрын
When Angel is talking to Gunn, and Gunn says "I don't need no help," and Angel replies "I might" - that was very cool. Angel respects Gunn and what he's accomplished, and shows that respect, despite how Gunn has treated him; he understands something about Gunn's feelings and attitude. I love that moment, Angel treating Gunn like an equal.

There's nothing Faith could have said or done to make Buffy feel better. Now that she turned herself in, Buffy can leave knowing Faith won't hurt more people. And Buffy's still not over Angel, she would not throw Riley in his face to hurt him if she was, it's immature. Outside of the show there's more info on Faith's background it's a shame we don't see much of it here or on btvs. I would have loved for her to have a spin-off.
@arc73752 ай бұрын
Eliza Dushku was pitched an idea for a Faith spinoff, but she declined, saying that after Buffy and Angel, there would be little new ground to tread before repeating things we’d have already seen before on both shows. Which I respect, despite loving the idea of a a Faith spinoff. I’m glad we never see Faith’s early life or background. I don’t wanna see that poor girl have to go through all of the physical, mental or sexual abuse she went through as a child. There’s no way you can do it without it being vile and distasteful.

@@arc7375 Yeah I heard that. I don't wanna see that childhood either. I would have liked to see how it was with her first watcher, it seemed like it was the only time she had stability and someone who cared for her. I would have preferred to see her life as an adult being the current slayer, slaying behind bars and her adventures if she got free trying to find purpose, that would be more interesting. Also to see what ex-cons go through, coming back to society and how hard it is for them.

One of the things that drives me crazy about people saying "oh Buffy is so childish in this episode" is like, girl is literally 19 years old. She IS a child! She's hurt and acting out in a very teenagery way when she says that stuff to Angel. Faith is also childish in many ways, because she's even younger than Buffy (probably 17-18) and going through kind of the ultimate teenage rebellion with everything she has done.

The credits that Faith is watching are all Angrl crew members, the first two being the Assistant Editors, the people who created that graphic. Under female drivers are Mere Smith, Elisabeth James, and Jesse Stern. Jesse is a guy and David Greenwalt's assistant. Mere was the script coordinator, and EJ was the assistant production coordinator. Mere, Jesse, and I shared the open center room between the wroters and editors. I was annoyed my name wasn't included. For S2, Mere got promoted to writer, EJ took her spot. Then mid-season Jesse "retired" to work on writing full time with his then gf...Patty Jenkins. EJ then took his job. Other side note: I had first met Mere in Princeton, NJ on Super Bowl Sunday 1998. I was in NJ and she was in NYC and we were both Buffy fans. 10 of us got together for dinner and half went back to my place as I lived nearby. Less than 18 months later, we were both living in LA and working on Angel. When Buffy abd Angel were arguing in the police station and standing by some stairs, in one take someone was making a lot of noise downstairs. Sarah yelled at them to be quiet. She realized hakfway through that this wasn't her set and tried (failed) to convert that into a joke. At the wrap party, any time she was shown during the gag reel, the crew stopped laughing. She wasn't at the wrap party. By the way, the basement of that building was where they filmed the killing of Doyle on a boat. And had an earthquake while filming. When Buffy first walks in, that is one of my favorite looks on Buffy/SMG in both series. She looks amazing. That said, I couldn't stand her in the episode. LOL

I may be biased but I understand Buffy completely here, given the context of what happened in “who are you”? She used Buffy’s body sexually without her consent and killed 2 birds w one stone by doing it to her own boyfriend.. after knocking out her completely defenseless, human, middle aged mother and would’ve murdered her. And then faith runs away to leave her with the fallout. She’s valid for her anger. She’s valid for not wanting to hear out faith’s reasoning, either. & in my life I’ve been on both sides of that fence 🤷♀️

Sanctuary, and the preceding episode Five By Five, were two brilliant back to back episodes. Buffy coming back into the show again was a major surprise at the time, and Faith letting slip that she had had sex with Riley, who unbeknown to Angel was a major shock finding out that Buffy now had a new lover, you can see how hurt he is. Standout moment was actually Wesley's dart shot with the syringe. Along with the previous episode Five By Five, Sanctuary was one the best episodes of the entire show. The Faith Centric episodes are really what many fans think Angel took off as a spectacular show. When Buffy appears you can see her pure anger at not just Faith, but Angel too. It is understandable how Wesley and Cordelia would feel towards Faith considering her behaviour. However, Buffy knows at the end that she has to save Faith from the Council Hit Squad. Wesley as well changes here and shows his worth in how clever and brave he is as well. It's such a bitter farewell here between Angel and Buffy in the police station, but Faith knows she has to atone for her sins by giving herself up, knowing deep down that Angel is possibly the only person to help her, as he has been through similar torment. A great episode indeed. These two back to back episodes are as good as anything from BTVS. Great X-Files reference again with Detective accusing Kate of being Scully, it was Scully of course who was the sceptic and Mulder the believer.

There are college courses on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but there could be entire Psychology courses on Faith. From coming to Sunnydale after her Watcher was slaughtered to being forced to live in a fleabag motel when the Watchers Council could put her up in something better and having to share Buffy's Watcher, having a former watcher use her to find the Glove of Minigon, when she accidentally kills a human and goes psycho, dumps the body and blames Buffy, sexually assaults Xander before the Watcher's Red-team takes her into custody, teaming up with the Mayor who gave her all the attention the Watcher's Council never did, gets stabbed by her fellow Slayer, goes into a coma for 8 months and when she comes out the Red-team is already on her trail, switches bodies with Buffy and learns what real love is for the first time, and goes to L.A. where she's hired to kill the only being she thinks could kill her. It's amazing she had the composure to turn herself in.

Just in general I really dislike it when people hate on Angel for hitting Buffy. She hit him first. He defended himself & retaliated. She’s stronger than him! I totally get why Buffy is pissed though. She has every right to be confused & angry about why Angel is sticking up for Faith. But I get Angel’s side too. Angel is the ONLY one who has ever been able to reach Faith. I think a lot of people think it’s about seeing himself in her & that’s true but I also think he knows how important a person’s soul is. He wants to save hers because more than anyone he can see past what she’d done to the damaged, lost soul that she is. I think he’s the first to ever offer her true forgiveness while for Angel I think he’s only been accepted despite his past.

Angel took a nearly unconscionable risk. If Faith hadn't surrendered AND accepted responsibility for her crimes...someone was going to have to do the hard thing. Capturing her would be chancy in the extreme, likely resulting in numerous casualties...if it even worked. Then what? Confining a superhuman tigress ...who is also beautiful and sexually manipulative would be optimistic in the extreme. Eventually, she would seduce and/or murder her way free. Neither the State nor the Council could hold her against her will. Buffy was justified on every level of morality and Duty in killing her. As was the Council in simply assassinating her. The Angel/Buffy fight at the end was just more breakup pain on both their parts. Buffy is just days away from having her body stolen and boyfriend sexually violated. And remember that Angel is only weeks away from the events of "I Will Remember You", which must still be agonizing.
@CrimsonsPeaksАй бұрын
I think it was longer than that since the first crossover. Time passed by more on Angel but yeah him saying “not in my city” is fair. I think Buffy understands that. He put saving Faith’s soul above everything else as this is his purpose now. Plus he saw himself in her. Everyone had the right to react the way they did. Wes because he got tortured and Buffy because everything Faith did. Even Cordy giving herself a paid vacation and not wanting to get in the middle of it. I only liked Faith in the finale tbh but she did want to change and did and Angel could see that. Buffy throwing her relationships in his face on purpose though just to hurt him is bratty. Even though she had every right to be as mad as she was, she always did that with him. I like that he said not in my city. “You don't know me anymore. So don't come down here with your great new life and expect me to do things your way. Go home” I think Angel was completely right here. But they both are right but Angel slightly has the upper hand because bringing up Riley infront of Angel that wasn't necessary lol that was just mean and she always did it to hurt him. Apart from that putting myself in Buffys shoes, who wouldn’t be absolutely furious.

@@CrimsonsPeaks Just more fallout from Faith's brutality and foolishness. Just a light recap: she came very close to murdering Xander, conspired to commit mass murder to bring forth a demon, tried to bring back Angelus the mass murderer, kidnapped Buffy with the intent to torture and mutilate her, assaulted Willow, tried to murder Angel in the most agonizing way possible, assaulted and kidnapped Joyce, stole Buffy's body, sexually assaulted Riley...saving her soul is fine, but her ass belongs to Buffy. As I said, she could only be confined with HER consent, subject to revocation whenever she got bored or pissed. Too big of a risk. This is much more about Angel needing to believe in his own possibility of redemption(and don't get me started on the insane risk of leaving him alive after the curse became understood.) Nope. The Slayer executes the rogue Slayer, and we get a new, hopefully sane, Slayer. P.S> I love Faith and Eliza's portrayal.

I think your watch tl is a bit off cause where Riley and Angel fight comes after Buffy finding Faith in La. He goes to Sunnydale because he's not happy with how they left things. Anyhoo...Buffy was about to put both men in their place. Acting like she hasn't taken a harder hit is silly. She punched Angel and was revving up for a second. Is he supposed to get hit? The Riley thing at the end was absolutely unnecessary, trying to hurt him on such a deep level knowing their past. She does "know" him and him trying to save Faith is in character, he tried it on BTVS before the watchers council kidnapped Faith. He's got the memories of the day they had together and now he knows that she's got someone else, that's why he's like "congrats, aren't you lucky".

I remember this was the first time I was angry and disappointed by Buffy when I watched the episode. She had every right to be mad at Faith and understandable not being about to forgive her, especially when she slept with Riley, but she refused to listen to Angel because she knew he was right and that would make her wrong and be the bad guy in this situation. Especially because Angel is the only one who understands what it means to kill people and feel remorse and trying to make amends for it and which is why Buffy hates that. That's why she mentioned Riley and how she trusts him, etc., was a jab to make him hurt and him the bad guy.
@Buffy8Fan2 ай бұрын
SPOILERS FOR THE NEXT CHRONOLOGICAL BUFFY EPISODE 1X19 Buffy nearly ruins Faith's progression by showing up in LA. I understand her anger, but she missed her chance. Angel's right. This is LA, not Sunnydale. If she wanted to put Faith in jail, or even give her back to the watchers, she missed her chance in Sunnydale. She also told Angel they should stay away from each other in her last crossover moment _I Will Remember You,_ so saying she thought he was in danger was a bad excuse. She really wanted vengeance (saying she has a right to it and trying to carry it out also counters commands telling off Anya for vengeance in my opinion, as well). None of this even takes into account Buffy hitting Angel and then trying to play victim to his retaliation. Good thing he knew a vampire against a slayer allows schoolyard rules ("you did it to me first") to apply. Angel counterbalances everything Buffy tries to say to him in this episode. She waited until Faith was out of Sunnydale, didn't call Angel to see if he was OK, and stated specifically that vengeance is what she wanted. When she realized she had nothing to argue back in the last scene, she threw Riley in his face and said "Faith wins again" like a petulant child in order to hurt him. Buffy even agreed she shouldn't have gone down there in the next Buffy episode when Angel came to apologize for what he didn't do wrong. And even in this episode Buffy agrees with Wesley that she was getting that it wasn't a good idea to be in LA. I love that Faith is getting the help she couldn't in Sunnydale. Buffy's arrival kind of proves that. She gets closure on the roof by telling Buffy things Buffy was ignoring from the moment Faith arrived in Sunnydale, but I don't believe closure could have happened in Sunnydale considering Faith couldn't even wake up until defeating the evil dream persona of Buffy she saw her as and was projecting because she hated heself so much. She would have had to make the realizations she made on this show on BtVS, but I don't brlieve that would be possible. Angel not willing to give up on her in the last episode is why sh realized and broke down. The Scoobies wouldn't ever put themselves in that type of position, not over Faith. It's too early in the will Buffy forgive me process, for Buffy to in LA and do anything other than exactly what she does. What I do love about Buffy's character is that she learns from her mistakes. This small arc across both series, shows that character detail well. 1X20 The opening of this episode is a great way to introduce a new character on this show. How many people were not expecting Angel?
@PamBoyka2 ай бұрын
Seem you forget that the last time he saw her he was human and she was the one that said let's forget and stay away. Buffy talk about Riley to hurt Angel and everyone forget that Angel can't move on like her. Buffy want revenge cause it was about her and Angel see that Faith could redem herself and deserved a chance the same chance he is having if she can't then what happend to his redemption if all that he does don't matter then what is the point. At the end what he does is for redemption so every soul he save is for him too. For me Angel should not need to go and see Buffy at the end he was right like Buffy said but i enjoy seeing him kicking Riley 🤣. EP20 is always a little sad cause yes it show you kids without houses, parents a roof fighting evil and surviving. I always respect Gunn for killing his sister o better said the demon that is in her body. And i love that Angelus name is used to create fear on the vampires.

Sanctuary is great! Especially with Kate rolling up at the end to roll on Angel. I thought Buffy was incredibly out of place in this episode and many fans in YT comments say this is the episode that broke the two shows apart. Not in a bad way but in a way that allowed each show to have its own distinct identity--fans say Buffy comes from a place of very black and white good vs evil and she has carte blanche in taking the bad guys down. She doesn't have a place in Angel's show because he's a demon trying to do good but his methods are maybe not always pristine and he's up against a powerful corrupt law firm who whose methods are also not so pristine. In Angel, there's much less clarity in who's good and who's evil so the lines are incredibly blurry and nuanced and to insert a very self-righteous character like Buffy into this environment... doesn't work. From here on, there are indeed less crossovers... events will sometimes cross over but the characters don't really cross over and if they do, it's just for short cameos. As a Bangel, I'm a little sad that this is kind of their last visceral moment together. That makes I Will Remember You all the more meaningful.

IMO they made a mistake with the crossovers in making the main character the most righteous on their own shows while making the interloper display their pettiest sides. They should have done the reverse. Someone just watching angel cannot understand why Buffy behaves as she does so they will just find her annoying. Buffy fans will feel her character was denigrated. It would be better to show the interloper as more of the paragon, since their character issues cannot be properly delved into here, and use them as the straight man/woman before which all the issues of this show's cast can be played out, that we will understand but she will not.

Like people forget that a MAJOR plot point is Buffy USED to be EXACLTY like Cordelia and her lashing out at Faith and then at Angel at the end of the episode ALWAYS remind me of that side of her cuz the ONLY reason she mentioned Riley to Angel was to hurt him. And faiths FIRST episode is a GREAT reminder of that too cuz Buffy INSTANTLY became jealous and INSTANTLY started treating Faith differently and as if she didn’t belong or like Faith was STEALING her life, a sentiment she ECHOES in this episode. SURE Buffy made a few efforts here and there but at LARGE it was pretty much that way their ENTIRE relationship where Buffy got CONSTANT love and support / praise for her role as the slayer and faith got NOTHING. Like legit ALL the mayor had to do to make her so loyal to him was be KIND to her and make it CLEAR that he CARED about her like a father. Legit that’s ALL Faith needed from Buffy and her friends and she NEVER would have gone down that path in the FIRST PLACE and I’ll DIE on that hill, it’s why I LOVED Angel Calling Wesley out or kidnapping Faith in Buffy season 3 cuz he ALMOST had her redeemed RIGHT THERE until Wesley DESTROYED her ability to trust in people. I LOVE when Angel tells Buffy “this isn’t about you, it’s about saving somebody’s soul” cuz that line hits SO HARD. Angel REFUSING to give up on faith as he recognized her trying to self destruct to make up for her actions and stop the pain she’s feeling is BEAUTIFUL and ESPECIALLY more so with him standing up to Buffy of all people to do it. For Angel and the narrative itself to FINALLY establish the IMPORTANCE of Faiths feelings and needs OVER Buffy’s constant drama for once is EXACTLY what she’s BEEN needing since her introduction, and while it may seem harsh I LOVE that Angel DIDNT let Buffy make it about HERSELF even if her feelings ARE valid. It’s super nuanced and complex but the simple fact that Faith was SHOOK when inside of Buffy body and simply receiving PRAISE and thanks for saving people tells us EVERYTHING about how she’d been treated before as the slayer. She was NEVER treated the way Buffy was or given the same attention for the SAME heroics. Being able to see how mature of a decision it was to turn herself in and how it’s seemingly starting to bring her peace for paying for her wrongs is beautiful. I jsut wish we could have gotten her here BEFORE she needed to go to prison cuz she’d have made an AMAZING main cast member of Angel 😭🙌 The entire theme of Faiths redemption being used as a mirror for angels is SO well written and to parallel these characters like this is GENIUS tbh. Faith probly has my favorite redemption arc in ALL of fiction, even above Zuko from avatar for me🤷🏻♂️

What sucks is from this point we see a lot less Faith because Eliza's movie career is taking off. We will see her again but not as much Same reason we lost Seth Green as Oz, but we got Tara in return
