I like how Angel really brings home the idea that not all demons are evil. Some demons just want to belt out tunes while sipping on a sea breeze.
@arc73752 ай бұрын
Humans are animals that evolved under the laws of physics. Demons are animals that evolved under the addition laws of magic. They can be good, evil or neutral. Most have souls, and some lack them entirely. Again, like humans. I’m really glad we get introduced to good and neutral demons on Angel. For Buffy, demons just represent an adolescent fear or trial to conquer. In Angel, demons are essentially just adults with a richer, more loved and weary life experience.

I look at demons on Angel basically being what aliens are in Sci Fi. They're just other lifeforms. Wonderfully nuanced storytelling.

Two fantastic episodes. The Host has one of the best character introductions ever, and Are You Now Or Have You Ever Been is such a great insight into Angel's characterisation. Nice catch spotting the McCarthyism reference! It's the perfect era to set a story about paranoia leading to hate and distrust.

Even though Angel had a soul for 100 years, he didn't become a champion until he met Buffy. He was still drinking donated human blood in Buffy season 1. He had some bags in his fridge, probably bought from other vampires. I think he stopped in season 2 after the scene where he helped Buffy stop some vampires who were stealing donated blood, and she asked him to get the rest to the hospital.

Thank you so much for decide to keep doing Angel on yt 🙏 I love your reactions to this show. Like you said Angel show you that not every demon is as bad as you can think and they pretty much live like the humans and enjoy the drinks and the music. I think the lady was wrong in thinking Angel could not fight cause every time she cross with him he literally kill the demons that were after her even his big friend so technically Angel was great choice to fight for her. We all love to see him singing and the visit to Faith that let you know that he really ment to help her and be there for her not just forget her cause she went to jail. The 2nd espisode is a favorite and top 10 for a lot of fans in the Buffyverse. I like that you can see part of Angel before sunnydale and if you remember the episode Consecuenses Angel told Faith " I thought humans just exist to hurt each other" and this episode is an example of why he thought that, like the demond told him "aww you think you made a friend" and he was betrayed by that friend and hurt by every human in there of course anyone would left them i mean they hang him like he was nothing, so why will you help them. He showed kindness and received death no matyer that he was not goung to die. And now he have a new place to keep helping the helpless.

Ep 1. The Faith scene was shot during ep 4 when she was finally available. Andy Hallett was a guy that you talked to once and you were friends. He exactly two weeks after my father in March 2009. Andy was 33. He had a heart problem. I miss him. Andy worked for Joss' then wife and Joss wrote te character for him. Ep 2. Tim Minear is a genius. He wrote the first draft over a weekend. In two seasons, I never saw a writer's draft that was as close to the final shooting draft as this episode. My favorite script of both seasons. The bell hop (JP Manoux) was hysterical. John Kapelos (hotel manager) was in most John Hughes films. Tim was excited he wad cast as he played another part Tim wrote on another show. David Greenwalt's then assistant, Jesse Stern pointed out that there is a nearly identical hanging scene in the 1938 Humphrey Bogart western, The Cincinnati Kid. Tim had never heard of it (me either) and Jesse brought in a copy and we watched the scene a few days after theAnge scene was shot and edited, but not yet ready to air. The movie was in a western saloon the crowd behaved identically. It was nuts. The problem with playong a vampire, vampires don't age, but actors do. David was 26, so Angel was turned at 26. David was 31 when this was filmed.

2x01 Faith is my favorite part of the episode. Angel looks so ridiculous on the horse. 2x02 My favorite episode of this series. Angel drinks human blood from a bottle while having a soul in 1952. I theorize he drinks human blood from the moment he turns into a vampire until BtVS 2x07's _Lie to Me_ episode (with a side trip of rat-eating seen in the flashback of 2x21's _Becoming Part 1,_ before meeting Buffy) when Buffy gives him a look and asks him if he can deliver the hospital's blood bags (the ones vampires attempted to steal) safely back to the hospital. I believe this because in BtVS's 1x07 episode titled, _Angel,_ he had bagged human blood in the refrigerator when Darla opened it, and by BtVS's 3x19 _The Prom,_ he was buying pig's blood from a butcher. Whether intentional or not, Buffy opened his eyes to changing his dietary habits.

Are You Now or Have You Ever Been many fans rate as one of the best episodes of the series. It's is very similar in tone to the BTVS episode I Only Have Eyes For You. I think it is definitely one of the top ten episodes in the whole Buffyverse. A superb plot, this could have been a whole movie on its own, with the backdrop of the McCarthyite Communist witch hunts of the 1950s. Judy's story is heart breaking, superb from Tim Minear who was involved in many of the best Angel episodes, he also wrote for the X-Files as well. We see of course the group now move into the hotel, which becomes the great iconic base for operations. 'We're Moving In'.

Season 2 is my favorite. We get a big reset in the mood of the show, plus the new set. And Darla! I always felt that they regretted killing her off so early in Buffy. Joss was a big fan of her acting and managed to bring her back, and without the bad hair style from her "school girl" days.
@arc73752 ай бұрын
Apparently she was very difficult to work with and was a diva on set, and upset the other actors, which is why she was killed off earlier than expected. But knowing JW behind the scenes and his preferential treatment of some actors over others, who knows the real story. Could just be that Julie Benz was standing up for herself. Either way, I’m glad she’s back. She’s a phenomenal actress with such a unique voice. Shame Brian Thompson never returned, after his falling out with JW. Another amazing actor with a unique voice.
@gungho12842 ай бұрын
Well Joss certainly had a"type" he preferred and Julie fit that mold. But in fairness, the acting is what mattered at the end of the day and Julie just nailed the part so well. And what mattered was just simple stuff, like show up knowing your lines and getting the job done in as few takes as possible. Maybe she did screw up a few things early on and then came back more mature as an actor the second time.
@williambowman23262 ай бұрын
Many of the writers and production staff felt that Angel became its own independent show with the second episode, Are You Now…. Many said that the mix of humor, action, mature themes, with the characters failings and attempts to be better started here. The first year made an entertaining show that was separate from Buffy and now the journey was underway. All of the main characters are here because of their past mistakes and all were blinded by vanity and hubris from their unearned arrogance. All are embarking on the same journey but each from a different starting point.

A great opener to S2 the show in Judgment. 'The Host' ( as he is known at this point ) making Angel sing a terrible rendition of Mandy by Barry Manilow just painfully funny. It's the introduction of my favorite karaoke singing demon, Lorne. We catch up with Darla and Wolfram and Hart. Angel singing Barry Manilow's song "Mandy" is always a highlight of this episode. Hyperion might be familiar because it's the name of one of the Titan's in Greek Mythology and has been used many times in stories. He is the Titan god of Heavenly Light. The only hotel in LA that I can think of is the Cecil Hotel that is supposedly haunted or something. Nice upgrade from a little office to a hotel. Probably got a good deal with all the history of it and also finding that money.

Glad you enjoyed it. Not sure how old you two are, but this was the world I grew up in, slut shaming, closeted homosexuals being blackmailed for their love lives, BLATANT racism, and anyone who spoke out against the government was assumed to be a communist sympathizer....so very glad most of that has been dampened somewhat, at least in our society. It exists, but its frowned upon instead of promulgated. The fear, paranoia, and even lynching of the different due to that fear and a world who didn't serve justice on those who committed the acts.
