In BTVS his whole role is "Be dark, quiet, broody and hot." It was sooo boring, so uninteresting... When Buffy was talking about going out on dates and such with him I was like "To do what ? Guy has no interests, no passions, he doesn't talk about anything except how bad and tortured he is and demons that are trying to take over the world."

My tips to anyone watching season 1-3 of Buffy, whether it’s a rewatch or first time, is to instead of seeing angel as the brooody edgy character the show is trying to make him, think of him as a comic relief. I know it sounds wierd, but it’s so much more giving to focus on how ridiculous he comes of, instead of trying to take him serious. Made him go from one of my least favourite characters (in Buffy, in Angel I liked him from the start) to one of my favourites. Honestly, that viewing works for other characters like that, in other things as well! Batman is another great example

That's the point though. The Angel spinoff and changed persona wouldn't be possible if hadn't been in Buffy. He punished himself for centuries and it made sense was admittedly such a buzzkill in Buffy. She saved him and thought him he didn't have to spend an eternity repenting and torturing himself. He turned at such a young age in a different time. It's kind of like this was his first time allowed to be "free" and a 20 year old

Personally I’ve always thought Angel/Cordelia and Buffy/Spike were better pairings. Cause Cordy’s no nonsense attitude and blunt personality help keep Angel grounded and he helps inspire her to develop as a person. Buffy also deserves someone as gone on her and loyal as Spike is after all the relationship drama she’s gone through and due to her influence Spike changes, gets a soul and becomes a better person. I enjoy pairings where the people mutually improve each other. I feel like Buffy and Angel just left each other with lots of trauma.
