This was not the intended episode. Kate was supposed to be an undercover narcotics cop who, to keep her cover, got addicted to coke. Angel, who would have still been affected by tasting Tina's blood on his fingers in the Ep 1 deleted scene, was to relate to her attempt to get clean. The network and studio both freaked out and made us write a new script. This caused the production to shut down for two weeks as we redid everything.

That's interesting. I love that idea....it would have been darker and cooler. I feel like that sort of thing would be way more acceptable now. I guess the show was not exactly geared toward adults as much.

@wacky_uncle The network was definitely aimed towards teens. Half of the S1 Angel writers came through The X-Files at some point.

Elisabeth Röhm is the actress who plays Kate here. You might recognize her from a later role, if you watched Law & Order.

wow. Thanks! It was during editing that I was really really feeling like I knew her from something, but couldn't think of it. But yes! L and O.....love that connection.

Do you remember Rosanne Barr and her sitcom on ABC? Her daughter Becky on the show married an idiot that worked at her husband Dan's garage. The character's name was Mark and was played brilliantly by Glenn Quinn (Doyle)

OH yes! Wow that's a good one. I used to watch Roseanne alot so I totally know who you mean....and it's obviously him but I hadn't seen Roseanne in so long I didn't make that connection.

I didn't start watching Angel till wayyyy after I started buying Buffy seasons. I thought the love story was the worst back then. I actually stopped watching Buffy mid season two because I was over them. But, when I started watching Angel later, I couldn't believe how well done it turned out. People keep talking shit about the 1st season but looking back, I wish I'd gotten in sooner. I'm so glad you're in!!

@@ernesthakey3396 My issue back then was the schmaltz. I bailed before Angelus showed up, which was a mistake because that's when it got good of course! I get that the age difference is problematic in the real world, BUT Buffy is not some typical 16yr old girl and Angel wasn't just some normal guy. It's bad and I don't condone it. However, he was vamped between 20 and 26 yrs... He's not like a real senior (241 yr old lol). I also don't feel he groomed her.
@ernesthakey3396Ай бұрын
@@larissabrewington9065 agreed, and even within the show, both of them talk about how "this can't be a thing"...but the chemistry was real, and they played the roles well. At some point in the show it is confirmed that Angel was 26 when he was turned; 26 and 16 is still pretty icky - it's the mature vs immature boundary that is problematic, and I think they handle that well, we can see Angel trying to be the mature adult while Buffy is the lovestruck teen, and while she has additional power as the Slayer, and has had to take on more responsibility than any teen girl ought to have, she still has all that pesky hormonal stuff going on. Then came the real shock, of how the curse gets broken. Truly one of the worst "first time" experiences. Make love to a guy and he turns evil?!? Wtf? As Angelus, suddenly it felt like David Boreanaz was a real actor - Angelus was chillingly evil and twisted, while Angel had always felt a bit bland. Angelus changed season 2 dramatically! And the show truly ramped up the...stakes. 😉

@ninipookie if you remove Vampire and Slayer from the equation and look at 26 your old man and 16 year old girl - it's creepy. Period. Adding the extra years of vampire age doesn't make it less creepy.

This is a pretty good episode. The themes of loneliness and longing to connect living in a big city are relatable. Next episode is a arguably the first great episode of the show (excepting the pilot). I'm glad you're enjoying season 1. I used to be a little "meh" on it on first watch because I started watching after having finished Buffy and was already used to that show being so narratively serialized and developed in its later seasons that watching Angel felt like an extended season 1 of Buffy...but now I see it differently and I really like the show's origins and season 1 does contain some of the best episodes in the entire Buffyverse. The beauty of these shows is the gradual process of seeing the narrative and characters develop. Enjoy the ride.

I think the early episodes of Angel were actually quite good, and actually I preferred the style of Angel, and I love BTVS! The Detective Agency was a great idea to forge Angel's character. You could feel the attraction tension between Kate and Angel as the season develops. The comedy surrounding the business cards was actually very funny, ( butterfly, lobster ). From the S3 BTVS episode Amends, you can see that Angel is determined to do as much as he can to help others and atone for his previous sins, and in his own show this arc is developed further. I read they had to re-shoot a lot of scenes for early episodes as it had a bit in E1 where Angel was licking blood off a carpet and the WB objected to this so they had to tone it down. This was very much like an X-Files type of episode, with the monster of the week etc, Directed by James A Contner who Directed one the best X-Files episode in Soft Light, he also did many BTVS episodes also. Still a great follow up to City Of. Believe me the show just gets better and better. Great to see you enjoying it. Angel absolutely is a brilliant show in its own right I hope you stick with it, the way this show develops is amazing, S5 of Angel is off the charts.

Not sticking to it is not even on the table. I'm too sucked into the Buffy-verse not to finish both these shows!

Hey how did you like the double misdirection? With Kevin actually being the burrower demon before he slept with Sarah the blonde girl and passed itself on? Yeah, Angel just gets better and better. I'd agree it takes off in S2, but S1 has great episodes and a couple stellar ones that are my list of faves out of the whole show. Hmm, I guess I'd say Seasons 4 & 5 are my favorite overall seasons. Enjoy the ride and keep the theories coming : )
