I think what many people fail to recognize is that life back then in Laos is way different than now in America. For us, if our parents don’t approve of our partner we can simply move out, get a job, support ourselves, and care less about what the community has to say. Back then, with the way of life being so focused on hard labor, family support, communal village support, it is much much harder to just do what your heart wants. This also goes for the other stories of women just submitting and staying with their husbands. It’s not as easy as “just leaving”. They’re not being stupid, they simply don’t know anything else. Put yourself in their shoes, 45 years back.

There’s no such thing as next lifetime. Only this lifetime! What happened was not by his choice, but his parents. It was circumstances that separated them both. You all need to learn to forgive and forget. The mother needs to allow you both to reconnect to find peace. Hopefully the son is strong enough to bring his parents together this lifetime as friends. Everyday is an opportunity to start over!!! The mother wanted a brother, why not live as friends and not enemies for the son’s sake.

Many will never understand how sad this story is. In a time when lovers had no choice and true love is lost forever because of the parents is unfair. There was nothing he could do. If we were in his shoes, we cannot change the past to help not suffer in the future is heart breaking with his son. Losing contact with his son and grandchildren is something he will regret forever. The only thing I can say is that he has to love the one he's with and live with the fact that his past is no longer a part of him. He has to move on.

I'm sure he said that to her before she got pregnant so she'll sleep with him. But when she got pregnant, he has second thoughts about marrying her so he caved under his parents' pressure. Sad story all around. The guy knew he love her but also wanted to respect his parents. Even til this day we are tough to respect our parents and back then the elders even were more traditional/ stricter. The differences between now and then is that we get a little more leniency when comes to dating or finding a spouse. My heart goes out to the mom who had to raise the son by herself.
