I would agree and disagree that she is not a Gospel singer but a Christian singer the difference to me as a Christian, Kirk Franklin is a Gospel singer, The Gaither Family do Gospel, Michael W. Smith is a Christian Contemporary singer, Ingrid Rosario is a Christian Contemporary singer and Hillsongs has two groups one CCM and one Gospel, same as Tasha Cobbs when she sings with Elevation music does CCM and yesterday she did a Gospel song with Kierra Sheard so that is the difference from a Christian person. It might be just a title to some but there is a difference somehow. I love both just the same... Even more, some churches don't sing Gospel like mine, and some don't sing CCM only Gospel, I have visited both...

@MrVvulf4 жыл бұрын
I realized something while you were discussing her "breathiness" at the beginning of the song. I love it, and I think the reason why is because it sets a specific emotional starting point. It is the way you might speak to a dear friend who is going through a rough time, and you've just entered the room they are in. They are feeling particularly vulnerable, and you want to be purely supportive, gentle, non-judgmental, etc. A whispery breathiness conveys that, and I think he's why she made that stylistic choice - as a storytelling subtext.
@Rojuicy_2 жыл бұрын
I totally agree...sounds like the softness during the beginning of the song was part of her arrangement; and it appears to be intentional....not only is she gifted and talented, but she has the skills to know how to use her craft. She's absolutely amazing!🤗💓💓
@makelvin2 жыл бұрын
I absolutely agreed. Breathiness conveys a more intimate moment between her and her audience. It helps draws you into her world. I also think it is important to note that she is more of a storyteller. She is not just trying to sing. She is using her incredible voice to tell and communicate her emotional story to the audience. She is simply using any and part that seems necessary in order for her to convey that emotional story. As a result, there is no point in her song that seems to be showing off, overly embellished and over the top. She just seem genuine, sincere and heartfelt. That is what is needed to truly move your audience. She not just a good singer; she a true artist. Remember she also writes a few fantasy novels on the side in Korea. She is absolutely brilliant.

I disagree with what you're saying at the beginning. You have a choice to be breathy at the beginning of a song if you want to, as long as you don't stay there. You can also sing softly and with full cord closure, but the breath can add some emotion in a way that fully closed cords cannot sometimes. Just saying.
@apst14504 жыл бұрын
Angel is explaining based on vocal technique POV. To create 'soft' sound either you can be breathy or use core sound in pianissimo. Breathiness is not a good technique and that's true. She was just curious if that breathy part, in the beginning, was because Sohyang is not being able to execute a good core sound in pianissimo or just her artistic choice which she found out that like few seconds forward it's the latter.

Just to balance out the comment section, I don't mind nitpicking at all, generally speaking and some parts of this video specifically. Not because I agree, but because you've seen a sample of a mere one performance. For example, that "breathy" comment you pointed out, and self corrected because you later found out Sohyang is fully capable to execute perfect pianissimo. Long time observers already know she had mastered dynamics to an insane degree from various past well known and not so well known performances. Which is why I encourage you to watch/review more of Sohyang's performances, so you can form a more complete picture of Sohyang's actual skill repertoire. There were occasions when Sohyang was breathy not on purpose, of course. There will always be things to nitpick, generally speaking. However, nitpicking anything which is false due to lack of properly formed baseline brought by limited population sample of observation of any subject in question is an amateurish kind of critiquing, the rash and uninformed kind, the kind that made me smiled and muttered "she will prove you otherwise soon enough" which she did within seconds ;) . I don't mean to discourage you from making any critique in the future, mind you, of anyone. Sohyang is by no means "perfect" either. I understand it's your training and vocation which brought this on the fly observation, just how you would with your other first time clients in real life. Barring the diehard _"stans,"_ nobody would mind an honest and correct assessment. It's making rash and false ones which cause you to lose credibility that you'd want to avoid, hence my recommendation to review more of Sohyang to establish a closer approximation of her true skill baseline. Just a heads up, Sohyang works on improving herself consistently. Unless you're watching her performances in chronological order, it can look like as if she's regressing/progressing randomly, gaining/losing bad habits here and there, for someone who also randomly watch her videos. Her seemingly ever youthful appearance doesn't help either, in establishing which year a particular performance was done either, to put said performance in its appropriate timeline. The rule of thumb is if the video looks old, don't expect the virtuoso Sohyang, as she was still a "normal" singer in said video, who still had a lot skill ironing or polishing to do. Instead, depend on the less imperfection, the newer the video. People can have fun testing their own observation skill this way too, by reviewing randomly many Sohyang performances and sort them by date according to what's Sohyang's skill level in the videos :D .

Thank you for reacting to So Hyang. To me she's one of the best female vocalists out there, she's a rollercoaster. Would love to see you react to more of her stuff. So Hyang is a South Korean singer known for her controlled, skillful, and developed voice who has been dubbed by the international media as the "Korean Mariah Carey". Sohyang's parents divorced when she was in her third year of high school. Due to this, Sohyang experienced great financial difficulties, and, according to her, was often very sad as a result. At the age of twenty, she was diagnosed with uterine cancer, due to the early detection, she was able to survive the cancer, but was rendered infertile. Because of the many chemo she went through, she's often sick, actually in her "You Raise Me Up" performance she had Pneumonia and was told by her doctor that she shouldn't even talk that day but she still went and sang and gave us THAT performance while sick, would love you see you react to that. She has gotten many and many proposes from companys to work fo them and getting paid and be a succesful singer but she never accepted any because she really doesn't have interest in making that kind of money. She's a devout Christian. She first began singing in her local community, with no aspirations of pursuing a career as a professional singer. She has said her only goal is to use her voice to comfort people who are going through difficult times. Would recommend: "Dream" "Fate" "Bridge Over Troubled Water" "Lean On Me"

She survived cancer when a young wife and gives the credit for survival to her husband and her god. Michael Hafer No? A heady mix is never inherently bad and can be a great way to alleviate tension, excessive raising of the larynx, nasality, etc. Sohyang, while she can maintain a great deal of balance in her mix far up, uses a headier mix regularly, especially on higher belts, certain vowels, for artistic effect, or even when she’s just tired or sick.

I think you are making very good points. I am a HUGE fan of her, but I do notice that she occasionally pulls back her tongue. Now, I am not sure if it is a musical choice to give her voice a little bit of a texture, or whether it is involuntary and a result of an old habit. However, as you said, she seems to be completely aware of this and she still has her tongue nice and flat and forward for most of her demanding notes. And yes, she is pretty breathy at the beginning but it is purely to create an intimate moment for this particular part of the song. You are a voice teacher and I completely understand that it is your job to break old habits and encourage healthy vocal techniques, so it is important for you to point these things out. So Hyang knows exactly what she is doing, but most beginners do not and they need to actually know what best practices are. I'd recommend Arirang Alone, as her technique shines the brightest in that song IMHO.

Two singers you would love and who have interesting voices: the Argentinian Leonardo Favio ('Ella ya me olvidó is powerful!) and one of the kings of boleros, the Chilean Lucho Gatica (Contigo a la Distancia is a favorite that makes me cry every time... But there are so many. Just from when he was young). I love this channel. Thank you for the diversity in the artists you choose! :)

i actually really enjoyed your analysis of sohyang's voice, it's the most unique reaction i've seen in a while. I feel like I learnt a lot from it and especially about how positioning of the tongue can negatively affect a person's vocals. A lot of people are getting a bit angry about what you said in the beginning about her using a breathy technique and I think that we all have our own preferences and there are other people who also don't prefer a breathy approach to songs and that's completely fine.

Since I'm relatively early, I wanna register another request - Jacob Collier live (either Hallelujah or Make Me Cry [live Mahogany Session]). Would LOVE to get your take on him - he's not usually lauded as a vocalist, but he's basically a musical genius - he'll change keys about two million times per song Which is why I'm not sure about his voice, like how to tell if something's pitchy or just in a different key, you know? Check him out, please :)

Opera singers are very technical. This is a performance from 9 years ago. Sohyang was primarily a Church Girl with extraordinary basic skill, who has become one of the Worlds most beautiful and talented singers. IAAS2 was her first foray into secular. She was self conscious, worried about her image and offending God. She was being criticized for great singing but without emotion or connecting with the audience. Look at her now. I'd place Sohyang next to ANYONE of her genre. I got tickled at your English comment. kzbin.info/www/bejne/o4uvqZmPpdh6pLM kzbin.info/www/bejne/gIOud5xtf6tqoZo kzbin.info/www/bejne/qpbCfWylm82Iqpo kzbin.info/www/bejne/lZjUgKJ5bbaNjZI

Love soyang but her dearest and closest best friend from Korea and about her age Park Ki Young is equally as good but doesn’t get as many reactions because she doesn’t sing any American popular songs. But Park Ki Young is more versatile and can belt them in Rock, Pop, Jazz and the genre you would be interested in : Opera. I know you won’t get any requests so I would hope as an opera singer you would privately react to Park Ki Young singing “ Nella Fantasia “ ( in my humble opinion the best version I have ever heard and I’ve watched and listened to all the world class vocalists sing this). Click the first video 4:08 duration because there is no English title. If you do listen privately and like it, please respond with a “ heart” symbol. All love, Al

Angel Azzarra : So pleased that you will or have responded to Park Ki Young ‘s rendition of “Nella Fantasia” and presumably liked it. If I may be so bold as to suggest a few more Park Ki Young worthy of reacting to: “ goodbye a word that’s too short” ( sustains the last note forever) “ wound” ( emotionally efficacious and impactful) “Hit hee Park Ki Young” (one of my all-time favorites) Mask” ( she was robbed. They gave it to the King. Total highway robbery). As mentioned, the primary reason “ So hyang” receives more reactors and reactions than Park Ki Young” is because of her ability to sing American songs in English like “ bridge over troubled waters” which she performs magnificently and was worthy of a noteworthy reaction by you. But wait to you watch and listen to So Hyang performance of “ everyone” ( omg... my favorite) Again, thanks for taking the time to react to Park Ki Young. I’m a subscriber now. All love from Miami Beach, Al

Hii Angel!! I really love this reaction, especially that part when you commented on Sohyang's signing the word "bridge". I don't have much vocal knowledge so I'm not sure if this is the same as your analysis but when I heard the word "bridge" sung, I thought Sohyang had done the trick of gliding from the "i" sound to "ie" sound while gradually stretching her mouth horizontally (also, to me the sound seemed to grow a bit more metallic during this glide). I have always thought this is a great example of enunciating the closed vowel "i" within a song (but maybe I'm wrong) so I was kind of excited when you pointed out the interesting thing about the word "bridge" in this video. Again, thank you for your beautiful and superbly insightful reaction! P/S: I recommend Sohyang's Everyone for your next reaction!!
