There were times, it seems, when the classic Disney animators did psychedelia LOOOOOOONNNNNNNG before it truly was a thing (see also segments of the original Fantasia film, among other clips), and this is certainly one example of that. BTW, Ethel Smith (all 3 of her? 5 of her?) was awesomely talented on the the Hammond B-3 organ, and I can NEVER get enough, visually or audibly.

This was one of the best shorts in Melody Time.
@sambascom28848 ай бұрын
I have watched this short on KZbin. And I have seen the Johnny Appleseed segment on a DVD Shorts Collection I bought in 2009. I also heard there was going to be a third film after Three Caballeros titled Cuban Carnival where this segment would have been. But the film was canceled after WW2 was over and Caballeros lost money. I personally feel it's too bad the film wasn't made because though I haven't see all of Melody Time, I feel this segment sticks out like a sore thumb amongst the others having read about the other shorts. It's also confusing on when this segment takes place. Between Saludos Amigos and Three Caballeros?? Or after the latter?

As indicated here, the tune is by the 19th century Brazilian composer Ernesto Nazareth. He wrote it for piano, but in my opinion, it works better with plectral instruments such as guitar or mandolin. There are many interpretations of the tune on KZbin, but I do not know if this particular version (with the added intro and the English lyrics) was ever released as a separate recording.

They might have taken the audio straight off of an old tape without adjusting for the age of it. That sounds like a ridiculous thing for the company that made the film to do, but I suppose it's possible, and it would explain it. Cassette tape stretches with age and use, which can very gradually lower the pitch and slow down the tempo.
