I always remember they were going through freezing cooling periods, not a lot to eat apart from peas and beans (we had practically nothing of the Mediterranean diet back then). Wars, invasions, loss of knowledge from societal collapse, and still they built that _without mathematics_ just the "eye" of the craftsman. Insane achievement and faith in the future.

I think President Macron’s impositions upon the artists who restored the interior of Notre Dame are ridiculous. The great cathedral has been Disney-fied. Having spent hundreds of hours in the pre-fire Gothic masterpiece, I am appalled by this unfortunate result. However, gratitude and respect to the first responders and the 2000 artisans responsible for her rescue and restoration. And the cathedral’s bees and their hives survived all of it!
@flyingpugs3678Ай бұрын

@ Wow! I remember immersing myself in the music of Bach way back when a public radio station did what they called a Bach orgy. They played the entire Bach catalog continuously over the course of a week. I recorded much of it on cassette tape. It was a revelation. The first album on vinyl I purchased was Bach’s Greatest Hits by Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia orchestra. It remains a favorite. That led me inevitably to YoYo Ma and the Suites for Solo Cello. @@sandrolarosa899 as a professional cellist I can thoroughly concur with your assessment that the cello encompasses a whole orchestra. We have a four octave range which goes from C 2 octaves below middle C to C 2 octaves above it. In the 17th and 18th centuries the cello and its cousin the viola da gamba were referred to in French as “Les Voix Humaines” or “The Human Voices” because they easily cover the normal ranges of the bass/baritone, tenor, alto and soprano voices. There are a few other instruments that have such a wide range, but none of them also have the exquisite sound of the cello and viola da gamba. And then to have the incomparable Yo-Yo Ma, the grand “ambassador” of the cello and of JS Bach’s Six Solo Suites for Cello, perform this most glorious of all music ever written for the cello, is pure musical bliss. It’s my favorite music to listen to and to play. There’s nothing else in our repertoire that comes close to it in my opinion. The airport, airlines were in chaos of course and lost their luggage, so they played in casual clothing. The theatre was half empty due to people being afraid to drive into the city (Columbus , OH, so no subway etc ) . After they finished a piece, they would wave to the ushers to allow people who arrived late to take their seats. I had a whole section to my self ! Great experience !!

When I entered the amphitheatre and saw the single chair sitting in the center of the stage, I experienced a brief sense of disorientation. Show after show, year after year, the stage was always covered in chairs and microphones and people and there was always movement. At your show, I experienced a level of calm and centering I've never felt before in a venue of that size. If I remember correctly, the show was sold out--17,500 people capitivated, engaged, quieted. Thank you for that and for all the enjoyment I've experienced at your bow...

Yo-yo ma rules. There is nothing like seeing him perform in person. Its like he and his instrument are one. He so freely gives of himself to others. I love how he continues to challenge himself.

@YoyomaMusic As long as Yo Yo Ma is around spreading joy I can hope for the future. Wish he appearing in Orange county California.
