Other highlights include, though not restricted to: - The Chinese Civil War between Nationalists and Communists, which began in 1927, rages on. - In 1930 Mohandas Gandhi leads the non-violent Satyagraha movement and the Salt March. - In 1930 the Allied occupation of the Rhineland since World War I ends. Under the Treaty of Versailles, Germany is still forbidden from stationing military forces there. - Japan invades Manchuria in 1931, establishing a puppet state called Manchukuo. - Most of the Arabian peninsula is unified by forces loyal to the House of Saud in 1932, establishing the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. - In 1932 the Polish Cipher Bureau breaks the German Enigma cipher. - The Soviet famine of 1932-33 kills 4-7 million Soviet citizens, with Ukraine and Kazakhstan hit particularly hard. - The NSDAP's Adolf Hitler is appointed Chancellor of Germany on 30 January 1933, shortly after which a mysterious fire in the Reichstag provides justification for the first steps in suspending civil liberties. - From 1934 onwards, General Secretary Joseph Stalin increases repression throughout the USSR following the mysterious assassination of Communist Party official Sergei Kirov. The subsequent Great Purge reaches its peak in 1936-38, with hundreds of thousands executed and many more incarcerated in the Gulag. - From 1934 onwards, repeated Dust Bowl storms devastate agriculture in the American Great Plains and Canadian Prairies, displacing tens of thousands of poor, rural families. - Anglo-German Naval Agreement is signed in 1935, removing the Treaty of Versailles' level of limitation on the size of the Kriegsmarine. - In 1935 Italy invades Abyssinia AKA Ethiopia, one of only two remaining independent nation-states in Africa. - The NSDAP government of Germany passes the Nuremberg Laws in 1935, effectively stripping German Jews of their rights as citizens. The laws are later extended to Romani and Black people. Similar laws are subsequently passed in several other European countries. - In March 1935 Hitler reintroduces conscription, effectively publicising his previously-clandestine rearmament program. - In March 1936 German military forces re-enter the Rhineland in violation of the Versailles Treaty. - The 1936 Summer Olympics is held in Berlin. Germany tops the competition with 89 medals overall, providing a huge propaganda victory for Hitler's Nazi regime. - In 1936 the Spanish Civil War begins between left-wing Republicans and right-wing Nationalists, raging until the Nationalists emerge victorious in 1939. - In July 1937 Japan invades China, triggering the largest Asian war of the 20th century. - In March 1938, Germany annexes Austria into the Reich. - In September 1938 the Munich Agreement is signed. Czechoslovakia is pressured to surrender border territories to Germany and later cedes territory to Poland. - In March 1939 Germany occupies the rest of Czechoslovakia and a Slovak Republic allied to Germany is proclaimed. Britain and France provide assurances to Poland. Simultaneous tripartite talks begin between Britain, France and the USSR. Due to mutual suspicions, defence agreements prove impossible and Poland is reluctant to allow Soviet forces on its territory. - On 23 August 1939, German and Soviet officials sign a non-aggression pact in Moscow. It contains Secret Protocols that divide Eastern Europe between them, including Poland. - On 1 September 1939 Germany invades Poland. War in Europe begins... A great time indeed. :-\
