I think you missed the hook in this song, there is much more to it, if you read further into the song you will find something quite different. He only sees what he want's to see, sure giving her flowers but he's self centered and dispassionate, not listening to her, never getting to know her. She takes the blame for leaving but really who is the bad valentine in this story? Have another go at it and read the story through carefully to the end. Otherwise you had a great first reaction.

That’s a good take for sure. Another is to switch genders. Most women are socialized to be “nice” and even accept or sugarcoat abuse. Maybe the guy Bad Valentine is delivering a harsh but important message that women can and should be authentic and strong for genuine connection with a man seeking it. If he’s abusive, call him on it!
