Stay is one of my favorites from Angelina. Just as you said... the simplicity.. the pure, raw talent. The stripped back setting is perfect for Angelina. When it is just her and a single instrument playing quietly in the background, it becomes all about her voice and nothing else. It really allows you to hear all those beautiful little details she is putting in there. Also (as you pointed out), the little missed words here and there add even another layer of authenticity that would be totally lost with an artist that did a retake to get it all 'perfect'. Some of the little imperfections give so much life to her performances, and I love that she just leaves them in their organic state.

This is one of my absolute favorites from Angelina. It’s Angelina at her essence-that magical, mesmerizing voice with no filters, living the lyrics like no one else. It’s very simple. I never heard anyone better at interpreting music so personally, convincingly, and beautifully. And I react to this performance now just the way I did the first time I heard it a couple years ago. So much maturity, music intelligence, poetic flair, vocal heart and soul and, oh, such a subtle ear that many singers whish they had. And I love Ivan so much! Look at him: as a musician an a singer himself, he is feeling it, and silently singing it so deeply in unison with his Angel friend. That is where lies the beauty of human artistic creations: breathing life and emotional inspiration over humans in their relationship with each other. Her second before last "stay" from the 5:26 mark to the 5:30 sums up what I just said.

What's not to love, eh? This is simply one of her best performances ever. The timing is 100% a choice. Google Frank Sinatra's timing. Soon they will have a picture of Angelina in the description, cause she has it. The two most distinctive, creative users of musical timing in recording history.

Nice reaction Nathan to one of Angelina's masterpieces. You refer to her timing or messed up words, but after listening to Angelina for years now everything she does is for the most part intentional. She is a master of "back phrasing", a timing thing, which comes from her love of Jazz music and also what vocal coaches refer to as Dipthongs which is stretching or extending vowel sounds on words which she is also a master at. Keep up the journey.

This is such an underrated performance by Angelina Jordan. This song is about Rihanna’s on and off relationship with Chris Brown. The way Angelina performs this song with so much emotions you would think that she was in that relationship. Simple but masterful. Angelina with her Guitarist Ivan Mendez singing in a mic and glancing at the lyrics that probably she hasn’t memorized yet. No fancy studio equipment, no second takes, just raw and as real as they come. I honestly prefer Angelina’s performance over Rihanna’s. Thank you for your reaction and keep up the good work.

I listened to Rihanna's version earlier this morning. It was entirely different. Obviously, as the original singer of the song, she chose what she felt was the right phrasing, etc., but it did nothing for me. I've listened to Angelina's performance on countless occasions and it still gets me emotionally.
@alanoakley32423 жыл бұрын
@@alberttenfoot I admit to having a bit of an aversion to Rihanna. The idea that she chooses phrasing stopped me in my tracks but I guess you're right - it's just not something that springs to mind. So it is with some bias that I say that I've heard enough of her to know that for her version to come close to Angelina's would require an upturn in form akin to Italy winning the rugby Six Nations. Skin-flick singers (as I've just decided to call them) do the artform a disservice IMHO. I hope I'm not being uncharitable to suggest, such is the emphasis today on the visual, that many singers of the past who went on to be regarded as legends would not get their foot in the door.
@alberttenfoot3 жыл бұрын
@@alanoakley3242 I agree. Mediocrity and bare flesh are the "gold standard" to success these days. What I want from a performer is the constant ability to surprise the audience. Most singers these days "cover" a song by trying to be a perfect replica and fail miserably. However, one thing they invariably have in common is that they sound the same. So, in that respect one could say they are successful :-) You said: "akin to Italy winning the rugby Six Nations." or to bring it right up to date "Luna Rossa" (Italy) beating "Emirates New Zealand" in The America's Cup. They didn't

Thanks Nathan for another sincere reaction to one of Angelina's most beautiful of her many masterpieces. This is a real Master Class in the Goldilocks use of vibrato, not too much & not too little, but just right & absolutely beautiful. I see you reacted to Diana Ankudinova's version of Wicked Games which is a highly produced TV show where she displays her amazing vocal skills & tone. Angelina as usual strips it down, slows it down with the genius use of negative space (silence) which only intensifies the emotion. It's just her at 12 yo singing into a mic while playing her keyboard in her "Music Corner" of her house. You won't even recognize them as the same song. kzbin.info/www/bejne/a3qkfnlqe6mZrZY

If you want to see a somewhat more "challenging" raw performance (because it's a lot more "imperfect" than this one), check out this practice session she did at 9-almost-10, playing piano and singing Sam Smith's "Writing's on the Wall". kzbin.info/www/bejne/f6qqe6yMetCEabM She was clearly still learning the song (I can't tell whether she's reading only the lyrics or the sheet music also - I think maybe the latter), and it's also very obvious that she's not even _trying_ to play at a fixed tempo. She seems to be concentrating on just getting the notes right and, more importantly, getting the _feeling_ of the song right (which she does… oh, how she does!). This is one of her least perfect performances available to us, but it's one of my very favorite AJ videos, because her voice is *so friggin' fantastic* .
