As a huge admirer of Hollywood’s Golden Age I have some favorite names on my list. The names of those people who’s works inspired and encouraged me, brought a spectrum of various emotions and even chained me to the screen. The sparkling names like Barbara Stanwyck, Bette Davis and Cary Grant. However there’s another name on my list that I feel a special sympathy for. Perhaps his name won’t say much to a modern spectator. Because that isn’t Mr Gable from Gone With The Wind or Mr Bogart from Casablanca. But still it doesn’t make him less talented, less attractive, less genuine and less genius. He was a different kind of an actor I believe. He used to call himself a professional cad, since he mostly played cynical, sarcastic, sneaky and cunning characters like Lord Henry from The Picture Of Dorian Gray, Jack Favell from Rebecca or Addison DeWitt from All About Eve. The characters he played weren’t simple and dull anti-heroes. What makes them remarkable is the fact he talentedly spiced them up with a great wit, a great charm, a great humor, a great man’s power and a deep voice that wraps you like a soft warm shawl and immediately enchants (he also recorded a music album). Rely on the interviews I’ve seen and his memoirs I’ve read as a personality he was a very wise, deep, charismatic, witty, captivating gentleman. He certainly had a raisin as we say it in Russia. It means that a person has something special that attracts people and differs this person from the others in a good way. To say that listening his thoughts is a pure pleasure is not to highlight even a part of how good he was at giving speeches, I guess. Besides that he was born in the same city as I was, 88 years earlier than me. (He was born to English parents and lived here till 1917). And that is amazing to know you walk in the same places where he did in the beginning of the XX century. Also I hope that one day I could take a picture with his star on Hollywood Blvd. and see other places related to him. I’d love to mention a quote from his memoirs that shows he was brilliant at writing too and had a great sense of humor: «On July 3, 1906, the world was at peace. Nothing of any consequence seemed to be happening in the capital cities of any of its countries. Nothing disturbed the summer lethargy of its population. Everywhere, people dozed contentedly, unaware that an event of major importance was taking place in St. Petersburg, Russia. At Number 6, Petroffski Ostroff, to Margaret and Henry Sanders, a son of dazzling beauty and infinite charm was being born. It was I.» My favorite movie star is Mr George Sanders.
