When luca was dizzy, and fish were swimming around his head, it was a play on a cartoon seeing stars. You get it? Because Luca still thinks the stars are fish!

26:40 The "You got me off the island, Luca." line from Alberto always meant 2 things to me. Yes, I think it's an allegory for Luca helping Alberto to actually accept his sexuality rather than just acting the way he does to mask his insecurity and abandonment trauma. But more strongly, it means Luca pulled Alberto out of his depression. Alberto had been dealing with it since his dad left and was stuck alone in his dark, bad mental space (the "island") that corrupted their friendship with Giulia. Now that Luca has helped Alberto start healing, Alberto is no longer alone "on the island."

Thank you, both! Yeah, I saw "You got me off the island," as an allegory for "You helped me out of the closet," "You pulled me out of my depression," and "You burst my bubble of solitude and pain and became my friend, and I'm so happy to have you in my life." It's INCREDIBLY HARD, practically impossible, to pull yourself out of depression by yourself, with no friends/loved ones or medication or any other means to help you. Luca was Alberto's anchor (if you'll excuse the pun.)

I really liked this movie it was so sweet! I actually went into it after hearing general talk around the internet that it was all a really great metaphor for being gay. Now I'm not gay so can't speak for that community but, watching it with that theming in mind (whether intentional or not) it definitely fit from what I could see. Obviously it works on lots of levels like you said, it could just be about being that weird kid and being accepted. And for some reason above everything else the two older ladies putting the umbrellas down and exposing themselves as fish people got me the most teary 🤣.

This film was heavily influenced by a lot of Studio Ghibli's films, from its light and easy-going tone, to the various shots of the ocean and surrounding and natural area, to all the food animation. Hell, the town in the film is literally called Portorosso, in direct reference to one of their most criminally underrated films, Porco Rosso. I'd recommend honestly any of their films for a future reaction, but Ghibli are known to be quite stringent when it comes to copyright issues, so there is a bit of a gamble there

My younger siblings wanted me to show them a movie, and I just showed them this one. I had never watched it before, and thought it would just be another cartoon movie for the kids. But in the end I also enjoyed this movie a lot.

About the picture Alberto pins to his Vespa: that's Marcello Mastroianni, famous italian actor in the '60-'70. He was the main character in Fellini's "La dolce vita", you may have heard of it (the scene with him and Anita Ekberg bathing in Fontana di Trevi is quite cult).

There's an animated movie called 'Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs' which I thought was pretty good and has potential for some commentary as it has a strong message about not judging others by appearances. It's not made by a really big American production company so not many people I've run across seem to really know about it. Might not be your scene for clicks as I don't know how popular it is but I thought I'd throw it out there if you're looking for something other than Disney/Pixar/Dreamworks! Edit: The Netflix movies 'Wish Dragon' and 'Over the Moon' were also really awesome so highly recommend!

I still doubt that it was a coincidence that this movie was written during a refugee/migration crisis, which hit Greece and Italy harder than most other European countries. Stereotypical indisposition vs. the need to integrate into a life you deem better is as strong a theme as the motif of feeling different.

Honestly, I see it the opposite way when Alberto reveals that he is a sea monster. Alberto is again trying to force Luca's choice for him. It's like forcing someone out of the closet, no one but yourself should decide when the right moment is.

A funny thing about "phantom limb" is anyone can experience it if they want. Put on a hat that's a little too tight and wear it for an hour, once you take it off it will still be felt. Same with gloves, glasses or amything that puts even slight constraint on you. The opposite of it is why taking off your shoes/bra after a long day feels so good. You feel the release of it all, with p.l. you dont, so it all processes wrong.

This is a young love movie lol. The conservatives had a problem with it but it’s all covert and so good. They took so many pieces of Call Me By Your Name but made it PG. If you pay attention you can see the old lady couple on dates/cleaning house throughout the film and at the end you can see them drop their umbrellas to show that their “sea monsters” too. Such good symbolism. Reinforced by the fact that their referred to as “disgusting” throughout the film, something often told to LGBTQ individuals and not something you would say to a sea monster lmfao
