I LOVE how they portrayed Hector without shoes for the entire movie, because he was literally thrown out of a family of cobblers. But when they accepted him back he also got his shoes back. It always chokes me up.

Actually I don’t think Hector EVER had owned a pair of Rivera shoes because he left before they made shoes, he probably wore out the shoes he had until they were unusable. That’s why he’s shoeless.

@@kenkakuknight What?! It's right there in the beginning. Where it tells the story. That Imelda thought he left her and never returned, so they had to make money somehow so she started to learn how to make shoes and passed it on for generations.

@@MacCheekz1990 they became cobblers after he left. His time of death is unknown in relation to when they started cobbling shoes. You're conflating the two events (Hector's death and Hector's departure are two different events). The sequence of events, could very well be: Hector left, X amount of time passed, Imelda learned to make shoes, X amount of time passes, Hector tries to return home, gets poisoned and dies. You cannot say "they were not cobblers until after Hector died" unless you know exactly when they started making shoes, and when Hector died.

The raw emotions The Oak is displaying makes this reaction that much better. He’s the one that always watches with the straightest face out the group, yet this movie hit him the hardest I’ve seen….but trust me, every part he teared up at were the parts that got me, too😩

That last bit where they put Mama Coco’s photo on the ofrenda ALWAYS breaks me, that feeling of putting your grandparents’ (or any member of the family) pictures for the first time on your own ofrenda when they pass… it’s a mix of emotions, sadness because they’re not with us anymore but happiness because they’ll visit you that special day

My grandma was so excited that they were making a film about our culture. She didn’t make it to see the movie, but Coco has a huge place in my heart because of that.

My mom passed on April, then in October Coco movie came out. It was VERY EMOTIONAL for me. I know she would have love it, for sure. This movie reminds me of my mother and my grandma at same time. This is like the 5th time I watch it and I can't stop pouring rivers of tears. I talk to my children about their great-abuelita, I tell stories about her. I tell my children about their abuelita's childhood, like how beautifully she used to sing. Since she was little (just like Miguel). I can't let them be forgotten: they will live in our memories forever. Thank you for reacting to this movie. Your raw emotions showed your sensibility. I hope no member of your family is ever forgotten.

Small detail I noticed; when De La Cruz was trying to make Hector stay, he said “I can’t do this without your songs” not ‘without you’ and he didn’t grab his hand or his arm, he only grabbed his suitcase. The *only* thing he cared about was Hectors work

Great attention to detail! There was also a scene when de la Cruz saved Miguel, he removed the guitar from him and just let it sank. I thought this was odd. This goes to show that he wasn't actually passionate about music but only loved the fame that came with it.

There are so many details like that in this film. One of my favorites is a big clue that Cruz was not Miguel's grandfather was when he was about to give him his blessing before Hector interrupted the petal was not glowing. And also a sign that Hector was the real song writer was him not wanting Miguel to sing Remember Me at the audition, he made up an excuse but he quickly told him no and of course we know why later. And one that I just learned recently is when you see the lyrics to Remember Me the is written as a slower song, you can see the notes, it was always meant to be played slow.

I worked in long-term dementia care for a while. Music is the absolute best way to reach emotions in a dementia patient. It’s almost like magic sometimes. We used to play my abuela her favorite songs when she was wandering. It’s a beautiful thing.

Poor Oak, spent the last 10 minutes leaking from his eyes like a busted pipe. In all fairness, even after watching this several times before, the last 10 minutes always gets me emotional. One of those animated films where every single element, from the acting to the music, to the concept and the actual realisation - eveything was on its A game. Top Tier Pixar for sure.

I love it when Oak gets emotional over animations, such as UP. Testament our big guy just has a big heart with a story. As he mentioned. His dad's passing two years ago and anniversary is coming up. I don’t know if you noticed this detail but there was a big hint at Hèctor being Miguel’s actual great, great grandfather. The golden tooth! The treasured white guitar has a painted skull with a gold tooth; and Héctor is the only character we see with golden tooth in the film. Some people notice it right away some don’t even think about until they rewatch it.

I love that detail! Another good one is that to send Miguel back a family member has to hold a petal, look at Miguel, and say his name. Ernesto does all those but the petal doesn't light up, because Ernesto isn't family.

I feel you, Oak. I could have used that disclaimer as well. The first time I saw this movie, I was on a plane, and by the end of the movie I was trying to hide in my seat and not show much of a mess I was. For several different reasons, I wasn't able to say good bye to either of my parents or my grandparents when they passed and one of my grandmothers had dementia, so this movie really got to me.

It was a great day, I was happy, but still I wished. Then I went to see this movie that evening, knowing practically nothing about it. It felt like a gift from him.

@@MasterfulPaladinFor what I can remember right now: -the main one: Pictures, they aren’t necessarily super necessary. Before pictures were a thing people would put something special to the person or something to represent them. Think a watch or glasses something that belonged to the person. (In the movie Miguel’s family members had the shoes they used to make as well as their photo) -Day of the Dead is usually celebrated along with Día de los Angelitos or Day of the Small Angels that is specifically for children that have died but most people celebrate them together -The whole Wold of the Dead has many interpretations this was just Disney’s -For some people it has to be your family that remembers you for others it is just who ever does. Over all most of the movie takes place in the Land of the Dead so we only get to see a bit of what the family does but we do get to see people go to and decorate the graves of loved ones and Miguel’s family shrine, most religious people are Catholic Christian in Mexico so praying can also be a big part. But over all it’s about families coming to remember those that have past usually with food and stories!

Coco is a love letter to Mexican culture. The story, the visuals, the music, etc. Also... the theme of the importance of family. How in Hispanic cultures you take care of your elders. Everything about this movie is perfect. And it was so touching to watch these three big muscular men move to tears by this story. Such a wonderful reaction.

Speaking of "repeater tearjerkers": Nimona was the FIRST one that got me upon a RE-watch (before that, re-watches NEVER triggered tears even if the movie had the first time). ​@@aloha803 I still give a little edge to Up and Inside Out, this would be my number 3 Pixar film. For me these 3 are the best written Pixar films, with so much detail and just so smart. I really hope they do Encanto soon! Honestly it's the best Disney film they've made since Coco, I looked up all the animated films that came out after this and none of them were as good as Encanto.

I’m not Mexican but I am proudly Hispanic and many of the themes in this movie connect with me so strongly. Mama Coco reminds me of my grandmother who is nearing the end of her life. She doesn’t remember my kids when she sees them but she’s so happy to see them. She also forgets me in the middle of conversations but there’s still so much love in her eyes. She was a strong woman who went through one tough life and yet remained gentle and kind. So the very end of Coco BROKE me as did that final song. Thanks for reacting to this one!

Same! Mama Coco looks so much like my Gramma Celina, it’s kinda uncanny. She passed away a few years ago just a few months shy of her 100th birthday and she could have been Coco’s twin. Fortunately, her memory never faded with the years and she was as sharp as a tack up until her last day, but I’ve had other relatives who’ve suffered from dementia so the sting of that still remains. I don’t have as many memories of her as I would like as she lived in a very remote part of the country and we didn’t get to visit her ranch all that often, but the ones I do have I cherish. Plenty of good food and open spaces.

I'm right there with you, Oak - I've seen this movie half a dozen times and I'm still a sobbing mess the last 10 minutes of the movie. Especially the scene with Coco. I love that it was music that reached Coco's memory... that's a real thing. People with Alzheimer's and Dementia - they remember music even when they can remember nothing else. Which is why music therapy is an important part in memory care now. After so many studies and just recorded evidence of patients with extreme Alzheimer's/Dementia responding to music even after they stop responding to family members and photographs. It's amazing. How universal music is an how deeply in our minds it touches.

Originally, Miguel was only going to play the guitar but when Lee Unkrich found out that Anthony Gonzales had an incredible singing voice, he incorporated the singing into Miguel's character as well.

My mom and I have been wanting to do an offrenda ever since we saw this movie because it connects with our families values so much. My mom has studied Spanish her whole life, I grew up on Spanish music, I also took Spanish classes. We also learned about the culture together but we weren’t sure if we could do an offrenda. Learn and research about the holiday. How it looks doesn't really matter, but the idea and intention behind it, the meaning of the holiday. If you wanna build a full ofrenda, Beautiful! Be my guest! But instead, if you just wanna keep some family portraits nearby, and light up some candles and offer some of the things your relatives liked once a year, then that is all you need. Pictures of your loved ones. Flowers (real ones, not fake ones). flowers of cempasuchil are a must! White non-scented candles Any food that your loved ones enjoyed as well as beverages. Heck, try to trace back your family's origins/ roots. Let's say there is a family member of German descent; search up traditional German foods. Make a small dish and put it on the ofrenda (altar). Day of the Dead is a day to celebrate our ancestors. Our ancestors are present and walk with us everyday our lives. Have fun and enjoy the family bonding.

The animation of Mama Coco brings me to tears every time, especially at the end of the film. Her hands look EXACTLY like my grandmother’s hands. Mexico has a really special connection to this movie because Pixar decided to have an early release for Mexico. It also was very emotional because it was weeks after 2017's earthquake, one of the worst in many years. The country was in a state of shock and mounring a lot of victims. So this movie really helped with the healing process. Being Mexican y really loved watching you guys appreciate our culture and traditions. And this is just the tip of the iceberg hahaha

Hi! Your reactions made me cry so much 😭 i’m mexican and i lost both of my grandmas more than 10 years ago. When Coco was released, my siblings and I were bawling our eyes out. Its been over a decade but it was like opening a healing wound. Its been so long and we still get emotional talking about them. I think when a loved one passes the pain never truly disappears, you just learn to live with it. For us Mexicans, mothers and grandmas are the backbone of the family, so this movie made the whole country cry buckets. I’m so happy our culture was finally represented in an accurate way. To me this movie speaks to the very real harm that generational trauma can cause. Four generations later this little boy is being affected by the trauma of his great great grandmother, but it also shows that things can be healed and it takes a strong and proactive person to put his foot down and say, “enough!”

I don’t know if you guys realize how powerful it is that you share your vulnerability and sweetness to the world 🥰 being moved at the end shows your humanity and I was crying just as much too! I spent the last 10 minutes of the reaction just going, "Me too, Oak, me too." This is my FAVORITE Disney/Pixar movie of all time. I've watched it 100 times and I still cry. The "I'm proud to be his family!!!" absolutely recks me. How long has it been since Hector has heard anyone say that? This movie is powerful, it's beautifully animated, and the ending is so sweet. You can choose a day that is meaningful to you and your family, and make it a day to share the stories of your loved ones who are no longer here. The thing that gets me every time, is the generational trauma that stems from an assumption. Isn't it thrilling to see how one person's assumption can affect the next three generations? Holding grudges and vendettas hurts others and yourself. I've seen this in my own family and I imagine it resonates with many people. It's like that line in Whatever Happened to Baby Jane, "all this time we could have been friends?"

I'm Mexican and Disney did a great job with this movie. I've been in the US for about 20 years now, and one thing that makes me a bit sad is how death is not talked about much in here, specially with children. We in Mexico grow up with Dia de Muertos, so we learn the concept of death pretty early on, and that death itself is not scary, it's just the next stag of life. It also allows to deal with feelings of loss and sadness in a healthier way, and it's ok tobe sad, to grieve, to cry, but to also be happy. It's the bittersweet taste of life.

My dog, Anubis, is a hairless Mexican dog, a Xolo like Dante. One summer a man and his famly came to Montreal and saw me walking my dog, he ran up excited saying it was his dog, I said no its my dog. 'No it's the dog in my film coming out in November.' Turns out he was an animator from Coco, and he took photos holding my dog to send back to California to the other animators, because who would have thought to find a hairless Mexican dog in Quebec Canada.

My dog is the same breed as Dante. They don't have their side molars, that's why their tongue hangs out like that, especially as they get older. Everyone who sees her has no clue what she could be, so I was so happy when this movie came out, so now I just tell people she's the same breed as Dante in Coco.

As an animation nerd, I was so excited to see this movie when it came out because I’d heard so much about the animators being able to perfectly match Miguel’s finger movements to the actual strings being played in that first guitar scene. This was back when Disney was really pushing itself with realism (Elsa’s hair, the landscapes in The Good Dinosaur, hair and water in Moana). Not only is the animation amazing, but the story is beautiful and makes me cry every time. One of my favorite Pixar movies❤

@@jennv2948 The creation of Rapunzel’s hair in Tangled was an animation feat that required a team of over 30 animators and software engineers. Each hair strand was an object that needed to move dynamically through the film, swaying, crashing, floating, sliding over the ground, etc. over 100,000 objects (hair strands). The only other movie that even attempted this before on a small scale was Bolt with Penny’s hair. -Fun fact: animators working in Tangled actually wore helmets with 70ft of fishing line attached and ran around the hallways to experience what it would be like to function with that much hair.- A single scene would take weeks to animate which is partly the reason it took 6 years to create the film (Along with the fact that they had to literally rewrite the laws of physics for the hair to function how they wanted it to). For this they created a program called dynamic wires- the predecessor to Tonic which I’ll get to soon. This was 2010. In 2012 we had Brave featuring Merida’s beautiful mane of Scarlett curls. Another feat in animation. I believe she was Disney’s first attempt at dynamic curly hair in 3D animation (aside from Mother Gothel’s hair in Tangled which was a tad less dynamic). She had over 1500 individually sculpted curls that generated about 111,000 total hairs. Because Merida’s curly hair behaves differently than Rapunzel’s straight hair and needed to bounce and recoil, Disney (Pixar) created a new software using mass spring systems to capture the movement of springy curls. Disney and Pixar are separate studios so some people don’t include Merida in Disney’s hair journey but Brave was a big part as well. I could have mentioned Tangled or Brave or even Bolt in the quest for realism, but the reason why I mentioned Elsa instead of Rapunzel and instead of Merida is because Frozen really was a game changer with their invention of Tonic. Elsa's hair had 20x more CG threads than Rapunzel's (over 400,000) each individually placed I believe. Elsa and Anna also had braided hairstyles which the animators weren’t able to accomplish with the tube tools (dynamic wires) used in Tangled so Disney created an entirely new program named Tonic, a volume based tool that allowed the animators to group sections of hair and move and direct those sections as desired- hence the creation of Elsa’s iconic braid which was able to be created in days whereas it would have taken weeks with the old software. Tonic is also responsive for the hair used in a lot of the animals in frozen as well like the wolves, horses and Sven. Elsa’s hair, not only styling but it’s interaction with the elements like the snow and wind lead to Disney’s success with Mona where Tonic was used to create the S shaped curls that Disney had never created before. Tonic is the tool responsible for pretty much all of the realistic hair we’ve seen since Frozen, including Encanto, which made history as the first Disney animated movie to feature a full range in hair textures from 1A to 4C. I would honestly call it revolutionary. Props to you if you bothered to read all of that😅 I really am a giant nerd when it comes to animation and will jump at the opportunity to go on and on about it.

And every time I lose it at the end when Hector finally gets to see Coco and cross the bridge. The look of happiness and relief on his face just gets me crying. So glad you guys were so deeply touched by this movie, tears were streaming down my face when I first saw it. That scene with Miguel singing Hector's song to Coco gets me every time! It's so clever how the song 'Remember Me' in its two incarnations has two such varied meanings. Ernesto's version is bombastic and upbeat, but oozes the self absorbency and shallowness that he is all about. Hector's original version is slow and meaningful, with so much heart, because it wasn't written to be showy or for an adoring audience. Hector sings remember me for familial reasons full of depth, Ernesto sings remember me to a world of strangers, begging them for eternal adoration but without any true love or depth. Also, I love that music never truly is a negative thing in the movie, like Miguel's family initially believe. It has the power to heal old wounds, like when Mama Imelda finally sings again and suddenly falls back in love with Hector, it helps Coco return briefly from dementia to remember her father, it even sends that poor guy in the hammock off peacefully to true death. It's not even a negative thing with Ernesto De La Cruz, because none of his hits are his, it's his greed and desperation for fame that turns him bad, not the music itself.

This will sound horrible but I genuinely like seeing people cry to these kind of movies because it's so connecting and shows no matter what race, what culture, what religion or how tough someone is, these emotions are raw and we can all relate to them. I especially appreciate The Oak crying at the very last scene because this scene had me bawling although it is such a happy one. Idk about you, Oak, but speaking as someone who lost very dear people like my grandmother and grandfather etc. seeing this scene made me ugly cry because the thought about the people you lost still being around you and celebrating with them is so powerful but it still cannot overpower the grief we hold in our hearts. At this point, every Pixar movie comes with the tissue warning for me. They always get me, but Coco might be the one that gets me most. Now more than when it released. This one is beautiful, heartwarming, has great twists, gets you thinking and just pierces your heart in the best way. Even tho I could guess where they were going the moment he picked up the guitar to play for Coco, how you'll have those beats of her remembering bit by bit, it's executed SO well. Y’all’s reaction should’ve also come with a cry warning. The end of this movie gets me ugly crying every time. As someone with a grandma who was suffering from dementia before she passed, I got to see how powerfully music can effect the mind. We’d visit my grandma every week where she was being taken care of, and one time my dad brought a keyboard (grandma used to teach piano) and she could still play almost perfectly. We sang too, and she remembered all the words even though she couldn’t remember all of us who were in the room with her. I thought this movie highlighted that well. I want this afterlife where we remember our loved ones and after they leave us they are somewhere safe and happy watching over us and one day I will get to see them again. There is one other message this movie has that I don't often see people talk about: Don't follow your dreams into dark places. They talk a lot about what might as well be De LaCruz's catchphrase: "Do whatever it takes". And I have heard that often from other sources. Do whatever it takes to make your dreams come true! But there's a danger in that. Doing "whatever it takes" means doing whatever it takes, including some things you won't be proud of later on. Look at De LaCruz: he went as far as to kill his best friend to make his dreams come true. If you want to stay a good person, you have to set limits for yourself. Don't "do whatever it takes", do what you're comfortable with doing. You might say that's obvious, but sometimes, you have to remind yourself of what's obvious. Dreams can be insidious.

Haha I sort of get the randomness though because emotions are so complicated, lol. For example: For various reasons (potentially because I get more angry at the injustice compared to sad at the sad parts), I seem to be unable to cry to certain "classic tearjerker movies", and in fact it was virtually nonexistent for me to cry to any movie UNTIL about age 35 for... "Inside Out" (when Joy was stuck in the pit thinking Riley may never be happy again, at her line of "Do you remember when she used to stick her tongue out when she was coloring?) - even though I was watching with friends and I DON'T like crying in front of people, that line almost instantly triggered tears so I held back...but holding back took SO much effort it was PAINFUL. That's the first time it's ever took THAT much effort to hold back tears. That movie actually turned me into a tearjerker-seeker because well... I guess stuff NEEDED to be "let out" lol. Took a while to find some that would "work" though, but eventually found "Interstellar", "The Land Before Time" and "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind." THEN... Nimona was the FIRST one that got me upon a RE-watch (before that, re-watches NEVER triggered tears even if the movie had the first time). If I count not only re-watches, but watches of it with reactors and even reading or writing comments about certain lines or scenes... Nimona pulled tears from me on 15 separate occasions! The record for "most cries during the course of a single first watch" that title would go to the Turkish version of "Miracle in Cell No. 7" at between 5-6 times just during one watch (I lost count so not sure if it was 5 or 6 lol).

I'm Hispanic, but having said that I wasn't strictly raised to embrace the culture, so when I saw Coco for the first time it did give me a new appreciation for the Mexican side of my family- even though I've never seen them create an ofrenda, they would light candles, some photos would be put up. Same with the other half of my family (apparently it's more common to create elaborate ofrendas back in the "motherland" so to speak, according to my mom, but to be fair it makes sense! Hey Oak, I’m just watching all of Baddmedicine stuff. New and old. I am sorry your old man passed. I can say with 100% certainty that your dad is proud of you and the impact you have had on the thousands and thousands of people you have reached on this platform. Mason Quinn- you are an absolute gem and the perfect host of the show. Your tone and delivery and conviction with what you want/ have to say is absolutely on point. The Answer- we don’t see it very often but your actual genuine grin could light up a room and when you get so sad you wear it and it makes me sad as hell.
