Love this. Trying to work out whether the dulcimer has semitones/tones or a mixture of the two. I'm guessing, looking at the position of the frets that it is mixture, but I'd really like to know. Intriguing instrument, lovely sound. Thanks Ken.

It has a 1.5 fret. This is minor 3rd as well as the major 3rd. Also a 6.5 fret. This means it has a major 3rd as well as a minor 3rd. Otherwise it is a regular diatonic scale.

Enjoyed this very much. Thank you. I know not the scope of this tutorial, but what would one look for in buying a dulcimer?

It depends a bit on where you live. I would go for an instrument made by a single builder or a small workshop. If you can afford it, go for a well-known US builder. I would get a cherry wood one to begin with. Mine was made by FolkCraft of Indiana. I think this company has just two luthiers.
