Kim was great at shortstop last year, but he has been a revelation at 2nd base this season. His turns on the double plays are crisp and accurate, he's made a number of backhand stops up the middle to rob guys of hits, and then from time to time he makes an incredible play. He actually made two in this game.

Can't believe I got to attend the game today, what a treat. It was great to hear the San Diego crowd cheer so enthusiastically for Shohei when he was announced (myself included). Yeah, we want the Padres to win, but in a way, Shohei is bigger than local baseball.... he kind of transcends things...

Shohei was NOT🚫 supposed to pitch today since his nail injury of middle finger wasn't recovered yet! If Shohei were now in Dodgers, Shohei would be able to skip a week or ten days of pitching rotation with the strong starters and bullpen backup😢! Shohei was unable to pitch with power as his finger was at pain when he uses strength and worse condition made blister at his middle finger again! Even with pain at his middle finger, Shohei still manage to use his skills, like using curves and cutters for strikeouts, to cover for his power. Shohei should have left the mound after 5th inning before Shohei had to end up leaving in critical blister condition and lost of 3 more runs. Yet Nevin was too lack of managerial abilities that eventually Shohei got more injuries than last start😭 as a pitcher! As a DH, without the protection of Trout and Rendon, Shohei is so vulnerable that his second half of season performance is likely to be seriously affected by walks just like 2021 season! And Angels and Shohei might lose the chance to go play-off again at the end of this season😫!

What a play by HSK at the end!!! And somehow Cronenworth held onto the ball despite Kim haphazardly running while throwing the ball. I didn't understand Phil Nevin's choice to "challenge" the final play other than to try play desperation and waste the umps time in hopes that the game will go on. Bob Melvin's bullpen decisions almost negated Joe Musgrove's stellar outing. At this point, if you're the Angels, where do you go from here? The injury bug has definitely cursed this team. I would think that...if they can't survive without Trout for a good lengthy period of time before the All-Star break comes, they gotta trade Ohtani and/or some of their other pieces elsewhere.

You're up by 7 runs in the ninth you certainly don't want to use your closer to get 3 outs in that situation. Melvin couldn't have anticipated that Castillo would pitch so poorly. Nevin had nothing to lose by using his challenge on that play and it was close enough to challenge. Angels were threatening so why wouldn't he challenge there? The Angels won't have to survive a "good length of time" without Trout before the all star game because the game is next week 😂

I don't think Nevin is able to control Ohtani. His personality is such that he forces himself to play even when he is injured out of a sense of responsibility, and it is organizationally unhealthy for him as a manager not to be able to stop him.

Everyone's blaming Nevin for playing Ohtani with a blister, but if Ohtani's saying he's fine when he really isn't, and then goes out there and gives up 5 runs in 5 innings, I think part of the responsibility lays on Ohtani himself. Unless Nevin is forcing Ohtani out there, the player and coaching staff all share responsibility for this kind of stuff. Of course, the staff is more at fault, since almost every player wouldn't say he's to hurt to play.
