"Angels We Have Heard On High" is an English translation of the French traditional carol, 'Les Anges Dans Nos Campagnes' from the Languedoc region, believed to date from the eighteenth century. Its text and tune were first published in the 'Nouveau Recueil de Cantiques' in 1855. The translation is from a paraphrase by James Chadwick, adapted by Henri Hemy in his Roman Catholic collection, 'Crown of Jesus Music' of 1862.
The tune is a traditional French melody, commonly known as 'Gloria'. It is also sometimes known as 'Iris' because of its association with James Montgomery's "Angels from the Realms of Glory",set to this tune, which was first printed in the 'Sheffield Iris', which Montgomery edited.
It is performed here by the Westminster Choir & Philadelphia Concerto Soloists.
