"Jesus [or 'Jesu'], the Very Thought of Thee" is attributed to the twelfth century monk, St Bernard of Clairvaux. It was translated into English by Edward Caswell.
The tune is 'St Agnes', written in 1866 by John B. Dykes and named after a young Roman Christian woman who was martyred in A.D. 304 during the reign of Diocletian.
It is performed here by the Scottish Festival Singers.
