Angie - you are an inspiration to others, and especially your beautiful daughter. It's a blessing that you had the courage to face your fears and the strength to work through them to reach your health goals. Your loving parents obviously had your back through the whole thing. Blessings to you for sharing your story.

39 years later I am in pain constant. It maybe saved me but the effects now are immense and my life and auto immune system fought the rod. I was active too but its getting harder

Thank You for sharing your life! I am so grateful for your family's support and the medical advancements that allowed for your complete recovery. Your words motivated me to stop and see the results of scoliosis. In just 24 hours, I saw the real effects and physical toll on three persons living with scoliosis. I know your story will help with understanding and in making decisions when scoliosis must be faced.

I had mine done in 1979 with all lordosis removed. It is called "flat back syndrome" . I also wore the Milwaukee Brace for nearly 3 years before the surgery. I too became an orthopedic nurse. I could not conceive of going back in to create the necessary 30 degrees of lordosis that would make my adult life more comfortable. Did they leave your some lordosis? Bone from my hip was used for the fusion. Now, I think bone from the back is removed and mixed to create the bone fusion. Since I am fused to S1, no ability to have a spinal with my children. Still, after all is said and done, I am fortunate to have done all the things I have done. I just worry about the coming years with arthrities in the area of fusion. I like that your parents involved you in the decision making. Mine were told what to do, and I did not have a say at age 17. Things were different in 1975. Thanks for sharing.

I have Scoliosis too! My first surgery was in 1973. Back then they used long straight rods called Harrington rods. Around 2005 I started leaning forward and was diagnosed with a secondary condition called Flatback Syndrome. I had a second surgery in 2012( rod removal) and a third surgery same year.. that surgery failed because surgeon only fused lower back and I was still leaning. I ended up going out of state to a revision specialist .. my fourth surgery was in 2014 and was a full revision.. I am having a fifth surgery in February 2019 to extend my fusion to T2

I had surgery in 1980, at Sick Kids, I was 14. I had a 54 degree angle. It's a part of me, it's been 37 years. My rod is surgical steel with three hooks, runs from neck to tailbone. Had a piece of bone taken from my hip to fuse at the bottom of my back. I have two kids (natural birth). I do have other health ailments but my back is re-enforced and isn't painful. this video is awesome...always check your kids back so it doesn't become as bad as mine. If I hadn't had the surgery, the curvature would try to move my heart. they told me I would be dead by 40. live, love & laugh.

I have scoliosis and foot drop. I've seen five doctors in the past year and no one would help me. I still keep going. I still continue to go for my dance degree in college. Somedays my back and foot are a little better and I can walk without looking funny.

I had a similar surgery when i was 13, my biggest problem during that was the fear and pain, difficult to go throught it. (sorry for my english i'm not a native speaker)

Scoliosis is an odd thing, I had twelve vertebrates fused from T4-12 and L1-L3. I was in my mid twenties when I had it done and had quite a bit of damage done from working manual labor jobs. I was left with severe pain, muscle and neuropathic problems after the surgery that I'll have for the rest of my life and have to walk with a cane. I just had a hip surgery about a year and a half ago and am now needing another two on the same hip. I think there are a lot more adolescent stories of successful scoliosis surgery because in adults there can be lingering problems due to the patterns of wear and tear to the spine itself and other joins. The spinal fusion makes everything rigid so make sure that you are aware of the commitments before having the surgery. But I don't blame the surgeons, they try to do their best.

Hi! My name is Milda and I am a final year student of Interior Architecture and Design course. I have scoliosis myself and decided to raise awareness of it and do my final project based on scoliosis. At the moment I'm researching more about it and looking more into what emotions people go through while dealing with it. I would really appreciate if people with scoliosis could share their experience and complete my survey. The results are confidential so try to respond as honestly as possible. The survey will take only 10min of your time. Your help is really appreciated! Let's raise awareness together! :) Link to the survey: scoliosissurvey.typeform.com/to/UCSXwW
