The ethnic people of Cambodia are Khmer, the most prominent indigenous people of mainland southeast Asia and rulers of the Khmer empire, whose capital was Angkor. When Siam became more powerful in the west, they sacked Angkor and were inspired by its culture. The Thai Khom script, used for ancient Thai scriptures was essentially Khmer.

17:52 Angkor is always a part of Cambodia since its building by the Cambodia king, Suryavarman II. The country was forced to be French protectorate in August 1863. In 1940, the France was defeated in border war with Thailand and surrendered several provinces included Angkor. However, soon after the defeat of Japanese (Thailand and Japanese are same side), the provinces are given back to Cambodia.

I went to Banteay Srei and Beng Mealea (40km away from sites near Siem Reap) 1st before going to Ta Prohm and the main clusters at Angkor Wat. This was a mistake as those 2 temples were more impressive, which sucks the magic off the main sites. Beng Mealea is Ta Prohm on steroids. A message to future holiday travellers to Siem Reap, plan well.
@supremekhmer65965 жыл бұрын
Beng Melea was built by the legendary Great King Tribhuvanadiyavarman who was the younger brother of King Suryavarman II. They just found this inscription that mentions his name and the temples he built. His reign lasted a very long time over 30 years in which the empire was at it's peak. After his older brother death King Suryavarman II he took the throne. Now experts are learning more and more about him and his state temple Beng Melea which was not just a temple but a city by itself that connects to the city of Angkor by a road system.

Regarding rivers, the Australian Darling river is another example of major waterway that used to reverse, either flooding out towards the center into the Menindee lakes and minor tributaries or receiving environmental flow from them that heads back towards the coast depending on wet or dry season. These days its controlled by many locks and drained mostly by irrigation instead of natural flow, being in very poor health overall, but water added still may flow between locks either direction based off timing/demand, its just directed by people.

14:15 A nice little One Piece reference, look at Lara's buckle. I think lots of South East Asia archeological sites had suffered a lot from the raiders and smugglers. For example, lots of temples in Sukhothai was raided by the smugglers to just dig the Chedi's foundation and took out the valuable treasures. Oh, and I have heard that the duel on the elephant back between Naresuan and Mingyi Swa has only appeared on Ayuthaya's historical record. So, If you want to do the episode about Ayuthataya, I would recommend you to check on some Burmese historical record as well. Just to prevent some one-side storytelling and avoid some biases.

A switch from Hinduism to Buddhism is quite a revolutionary shift, comparable to say switching from Judaism to Christianity, or from either of those to Islam. Similarly, while Buddhism branched from Hinduism it also diverged from it. You mention Buddha being an avatar of Vishnu, but that is the Hindu perspective in which The Buddha is a test to see who will remain faithful. In Buddhism he is The Bodhisatva whose mission it was to seek the eternal truth, and once found even became the teacher of deities. We tend to look at religious changes from a European, or Mediterranean vantage of going from one of form or another of "paganism" to Christianity, going from polytheism to monotheism (or quasi-monotheism depending on the interpretation).

I think Kaheva is overreaching her “ expertise”. Ankhor clearly fits in the tradition of templebuilding as it is known from India. Ankor is the central temple of a much larger complex of temples hundreds of miles wide in four directions grom its central: Ankor. that complex of temples formed the spiritual and gouvernemental centre of the huge Kmer empire. The people themselves lived in wooden houses the remains of those have all vanished into rainforest biomass. To build in this stone is very easy as it is more clay than stone and can be worked by a knife. A statue of a meter high can be cut in halve a day.

Just a note- the site of the Dome of the Rock is also an, actually THE Axis Mundi in Judaism, just because of political reasons we don't have access, besides the doctrine that access would be forbidden anyway because of complicated spiritual reasons, and the doctrine that the Axis Mundi of the site is in "exile" until the end times, and thus "shares" its status as Axis Mundi with the Western Wall. If you're discussing a social science, please don't let politics get in the way of social feelings- if you're afraid of a comment war, saying "The Ka'abah is an Axis Mundi in Islam" or "St. Peter's Basilica is an Axis Mundi in Catholicism" would have been better examples, as there's no politics involved in those facts.

I think "more obscure" may be the wrong way to put it, this is a broad overview of the rise and fall of cities near a million people, for reference equal to the sum of the three largest US colonies during the revolutionary war, or about half as the entirety of the colonies involved. Likewise while longer ago, these events where not ancient by any means, and still have large ramifications for a large portion of the planet, either by religion or politics (and often its mighty hard to separate the two). Instead the biggest difference here is geographical, for US creators its a far away place, while events like the civil war are local history, thus more often spoken. But even here in majority white, european, english speaking Australasia US civil war is a somewhat rare topic, with early colonialism in this region being the start of our school taught history and long after US independence.
@Bloodstar-o75 жыл бұрын
@@SheepInACart I think by "more obscure," they meant global history and other topics they are less informed about. Its definitely a US-centric view since as you said this is local history to someone, just as US History is local to them.

You were right about the interpretation of linga. There was nothing wrong about what you said. And this is something coming from an Indian. Though you will find that many of my fellow countrymen, treat the definition of linga in a more PG ways, and deny to accept the fact that linga is indeed penis. In my opinion, as Hinduism is a very old religion, then during that time human population was not very much. So I think it is obvious for the people of that time to treat human reproduction as a sacred thing.

Okay sacred spaces are usually not compartamentalized in a manner that distracts you from the sacred objects and tend to guide you into the sacred object. For example churches and old pagan temples leave the sacred in the center of a long corridor that is visible from the entrance so that normally you have to approach it. It's not just entering from the front (by the way you seem to have forgotten back doors) but processing towards a centralized alter visable from the front and which the whole room points to.
