📜 The Haitian Revolution: The Slave Society - The Haitian Revolution is a unique historical event in many ways. It was both an offshoot of the French Revolution, but also an anti-colonialist revolution. It was also the second American nation to successfully win its independence. But before we can talk about the Revolution itself, we have to talk about how influential Haiti was to France's economy and how it's complicated social structure primed it for revolt and revolution. Because here, in the colony built upon the countless bodies of the enslaved, sugar is king. But not for long.

The Haitian Revolution is completely separate from France and the French Revolution. It was a war against slavery so obviously native or African slaves had been fighting before then. They didn't include Makandal's Rebellion. It's the precursor to the Haitian Revolution were he and Boukman tried to poison the white slave owners. But it failed after someone was tortured for information.

I have my fingers crossed and I'll wait until the end; there's a video with millions of views that does an atrocious job of covering this topic. I do like the fact that the map for the colony of Saint Domingue is accurate as I often see people using the modern day map of Haiti and the Dominican Republic. EDIT: Another thing that is accurate is that a large number of the slaves that were arriving had military experience fighting in civil wars in their homeland. So the French colonist were actually importing a trained army.

Fun trivia: the haitian revolution was a thorn in the side of america when it itself became an empire, so haiti was invaded multiple times by american marines last time being I think it was 2008 or 09.

I love Haitians independence. I am so excited! I hope extra credits covers the bad in both sides. However they are known for bias unfortunately. For those who don’t know, after the Haitians become independent they burned the entire nation. All plantations and infrastructure. It economically crippled them and they still deal with it today.

The flag isn't wrong at 3:45. The Tricolore was made in 1790, and it was originally red, white, and blue from left-to-right. This changed to be the reverse in 1794. The Haitian Revolution started in 1791. That's why the flag is backwards at 3:45. This is some INCREDIBLE attention to detail.

It is a shame, the political situation in Haiti. Because Haitians have so very much to look back upon and be proud of. If the more educated and entrepreneurial of the people stayed or went back they could again build up their nation.

5:50 so this is actually how my mother's family got "Started". This is the story I was told: My mother's ancestors (on her father's side) were originally from Denmark and were land owners. However, one of the men fell for a female slave and free and married her behind his families back. Years later, after he died, he left everything to his oldest child (who was half-black). But because his family was racist and against their union in the first place, they blocked the child from ever receiving his inheritance. Eventually, he wound up in America.

2:18 I like to imagine that in tje dead of the night, among the faint creaks of weathered wood boards and the sounds of waves barelling against the ship, faint "Nyeh"s can be heard from the darkest corners, while the sound of a bone zylophone play songs you know you've never heard, yet always sound very familiar

That’s stupid. This video clearly doesn’t condone slavery at all. It makes it pretty clear how awful slavery in the Caribbean was.
