It took me ages to work out angled take offs but once I learned and practiced it in small clean waves on my longboard it REALLY WORKED. Simply lean into the clean face as you paddle, give yourself a few more seconds to pop up and follow your eyes to where you want to go. It's harder on bigger waves but can be done.

I only surfed for a week in Moliets (France), Raglan (NZ) and Noosa (QLD, Australia) and have always struggled with progressing from taking lessons and surfing whitewash. Couple of weeks back I was in Lisbon and talked to a really friendly guy from a surf shop called Lisbon Crooks. He emphasized exactly what you have been talking about from 8:00 in this video: Taking of on an angle is so important he told me and he also reckoned I should try bodyboarding / boogie boarding to experience better how a wave should feel and how a wave should look like and where to position myself and how to take off. He said thats the fastest way to learn how to surf green waves. I'm so glad I met him and found your channel as well. I've really struggled to get good advice and found out surfing lessons are really shit (only really good if you've never surfed, if you're beyond that stage you should frolick in the waves on your own) and its hard to get other surfers talking to you to give you tips about common rookie mistakes. I dont know if its because they're long beyond that point and cant really remember, or they want as least amount of people in the water as possible (so they rather see you giving up because you get frustrated because you dont progress anymore) so they catch more waves, which they do anyway... Massive thanks from Holland (where surfing is pretty shit tbh) for this helpful channel.

So sorry I missed you! I live in Southern California and would have made sure to see your films and go to the surf meetups. I saw this after it was over 😯 Hope you had a safe trip home, it sounds like you were traveling right when the coronavirus scariness and lockdowns were starting to happen. Hope you have been able to surf at home. I am just getting out there again as our restrictions are starting to ease now. I love all your tips, your positive vibe and your energy! Hope to go on one of your retreats someday when it is ok to travel again. 🏄‍♀️ Sincerely, Val (a 64 year old "frothing grom") 😉

super video kales, as always: I think most surfers on the intermediatish level struggle even more with...generating speed on our backhand, i would love tips on that, i do understand the compression and release wich i do on a heartbeat on my forehand, but i still struggle on backhand. k

Hey Kale, ive been surfing for 3 years now ( couple of weekends during our surf months in Malaysia) and what i find is that that sweet spot for the angle take off is not easy 🙂. I use a 9 ft longboard ( not a foamy) and if u angle too much, you will get wiped out and if you dont angle enough, you end up struggling to manuever on open face or worst yet, nosedive.

Nice video as always. I'd like to see a video about how you change back/front foot position in different occasion; before bottom/top turns, when creating speed, when taking off steep wave, in tube, etc. I've never seen a video talking about foot position in detail so it would be great! thanks.

I've watched a number of these videos for beginners that mentions not to lean over the outside of the board, and from my experience, this is true. I always dig a rail, nose dive the board and fall off. So how can you make the jump to what I see in most other videos of people surfing smaller boards, where they are well off centre while turning a bottom turn, and carving beautifully. Is this not possible on a longer board? How do you keep the rails from digging in? How can you progress from a slow trimming turn to a fast carving turn? This would make a great video, weight distribution on your feet etc.
@KalesBroccoli
@KalesBroccoli 4 жыл бұрын
you want the rails to dig in it's all to do with how much speed you have. You can afford to be more off centre with more speed.

Hey How to Rip. I have a question regarding surfing progression. I don't know why but quite often, when trying to catch a wave, I catch it (an unbroken wave), I glide, but then exactly when I want to pop up, I suddenly speed down to the bottom without having a decent chance to pop up (because when going too fast, pop up becomes impossible.) This happens even on mellow waves. Why is this happening ? Is this due to not paddling hard enough into the wave initially, or due to not popping up quick enough? Or maybe something else ? I am an intermediate however, and have the fitness and skills to pop up swiftly on my fish. I feel like I am the only on with this problem yet it happens so much. Also have the capability to read waves correctly. Any tips on this would be appreciated.. I feel like this is hindering my surfing progression substantially.
