I anxiously await every episode of this trip! I've flown across Canada to and from Alaska but could never see all the beautiful terrain from 28,000 feet. Today I couldn't physically get myself in a small airplane much less fly the way the two of you are doing. My wife and I did almost the same trip in July six years ago - Kluane Lake is white in the summer, from glacial melt. We cleared customs at Beaver Creek, and we spent a couple of days in Whitehorse due to adverse weather further east The landing at Whitehorse was - sporty - about 20 - 30 kt crosswind (we were in a Husky).

Excellent video/flight! One time ago, I intended to drive to Alaska via the AlCan Hwy. Hauling a 5th wheel behind me, (my home!) I got as far as Watson Lake and had to make a decision. I opted for driving to White Horse YK instead. Having driven from Tillicum, WA (outside of Ft Lewis, WA) from where I lived, in 1980) to Watson Lake was quite the journey. I remember the drive very well. British Columbia then had the 'moniker' on their license plate: Beautiful BC; and rightfully stated! Driving up the Frasier River past Bridge Lake where I'd previously fished for Lake Trout and 'Kamloops' (Canadian Rainbow) up to Dawson Creek where I overnighted and had to demonstrate I had sufficient funds, gas and that my vehicle was 'road worthy' for the next leg. I saw some beautiful scenery all the way up to Watson Lake. Some days I could 'haul' about 50mph and others only 25 all day due to the constant ever changing road conditions/repair/construction. I still remember seeing the 'Northern Lights' (Aurora Borealis (sic) before coming into White Horse. I also remember the sun setting at 0100 (Local time) and rising at 01:20 Local time!.. Definitely 'north' of the 60th Parallel! Now am a retired US Army Surveyor and my days of 'adventurous' wandering are presently satiated by flight simming (FSX) and videos like this series you've posted. Thank you so much for your efforts! Wishing you God Speed in all your ventures!

Flying remotely as you call it, was mostly just the way, up here. Even just out of the bigger cities, a few miles, there was never complete radar service / coverage in Canada. Now with the advent of ADS-B that will no longer be the case ( a good thing ). The most difficult part of borders? As you stressed - and stressed both of you - having your paperwork all in order, I believe. Enjoy the scenery and characters you meet along the way. Marvellous adventure for all, thanks for letting us ride along. Absolute 'eh' ;-) for effort! Solid pre-flight planning makes the day. Good luck.

What fun! You're recreating my dangerously inexperienced rookie 100 hour pilot flight in 2013 from Z41 to KPWT, but I was going much slower at 70knots true (PA-12). My fuel endurance was about 3.5 hours, if I was feeling lucky, so I had to stop more often. I did carry 10 gallons inside, just in case, but only needed those once. I had similar weather from Chickaloon to Tok, but warmer (August), and had to land on the highway between Northway and Beaver Creek because of weather ahead, causing me to be an hour late arriving in Beaver Creek. The very nice elderly couple from Texas I met at the pull-out in their ginormous motor home fed me lunch and asked if I'd do it again so they could film it. Nope; I would not, thank you very much. My Canadian customs experience after I called them on the phone and announced my late arrival was "welcome to Canada. No inspection will be necessary" even though the checkpoint was right there across the road. I then got stuck at Burwash just a bit down the road for three days after my oil pressure gauge quit, waiting for a mechanic to come diagnose the problem (faulty sensor) and install the oil pressure gauge from his tractor to get me home. No 337 needed, he signed it off as airworthy with instructions to check the zip ties and the copper line to the engine during pre-flight. (I love Canada, and of course, I mailed it back to him). Also got stuck in Whitehorse for three days due to thunderstorms to the east, and I finally gave up and diverted from your route and went south to Atlin instead of crossing over the mountains to Williams Lake, and then over to the Cassiar highway to Dease Lake and south from there. Since I was heading to the Seattle area, this actually made much more sense than following the highway across the mountains, going south, and then crossing back. Also, no co-pilot. No brother potato. I did have a small plastic German Shepherd that I tied to the compass in memory of my dear sweet Lizzie dog. German Shepherds are loyal and will take care of you as you cross 100 miles of wilderness with nowhere to land. Few aviators are aware of that vital safety information; just sayin'. Love your videos. Carry on!
@angleofattack
@angleofattack 2 жыл бұрын
Love the story! I recently lost my german shepherd. She was 10 years old. So I know how you feel, and can totally back you up about those wonderful creatures. She was a special, special girl. Your plan totally makes sense considering you were going to Seattle. But man, you had sloooooooow progress. We did all of that in ONE DAY! Of course we have a lot more tools now, so we probably would have just stayed somewhere more comfortable until things cleared up. Sometimes it's a hard go. We were lucky to have smooth sailing.

@@angleofattack Yeah, that old 108 horse has since been replaced with an O-320-B2b and a Borer prop. It does MUCH better now. Also, I had paper charts and the A/F directory and the Canadian flight supplement, along with an ancient Lorance GPS. My primary was the compass (not ideal), and my watch. Foreflight is awesome. Awesome, very well-made video! 👍🏼 Keep up the good work! 💪🏼 The border crossing into Canada seems quite straightforward, except for the need to stay inside, until customs officers "invite" you to come out. Quite different with our workflows when flying from/to the EU, but this principle seems to be standard in both Canada and USA. In Europe, the most challenging part of crossing borders are the different aviation rules, habits and languages per country. Especially when you need to use radios in local language while landing on VFR-only airfields. ;-)
@angleofattack
@angleofattack 2 жыл бұрын
I can imagine that'd be really difficult. There are not many differences between flying in Canada and the US, at least at the basic level. So it wasn't too hard to communicate or stick to the rules.

Next summer, I'm hoping to fly from home base on the North Carolina coast to Alaska. So your series is invaluable! I'd enjoy more info on the flight itself. So, for example, on today's leg, would have liked to have known the total distance, speeds, winds, ceilings, duration of flight, etc. Also, you might have mentioned this elsewhere, but would you be able to file and fly IFR along the route? I'm guessing you don't have much ice protection, but could there be conditions where the clouds are so cold that icing isn't a concern?

I'll have to think about that more as we script the next episodes. Thanks!

Awesome series! I'm curious what cameras did you use? And more importantly how were you able to maintain battery power. Keep up the good work.

I used mostly GoPros on this trip. Mounts from FlightFlix, and TSO power from FlightFlix. Kept cameras running the whole time, so long as there wasn't an error with the cameras.

We stop at KDIK. And then land in Glenwood before going to OSH. Any chance you were controlling at that time?

My wife and I and another couple made the trip from Indiana to Fairbanks and back in 1987. Enjoying seeing again the route we flew in a Piper Arrow. Customs was simpler then and the agents were very friendly. Does Whitehorse airport still have the DC-3 on a pole for the wind direction indicator? Thanks for all the work to post your trip. We went in July and everything was green.

Yes, and really cool story, it was Kyle Cameron's Dad (where we hangared) that engineered that! I'll try and tell that story in the next one.

Great videos as usual… very entertaining ! One thing that would be great to share with many of the people who aren’t pilots and even for us who are… I’d be fun to know your altitudes you’re heading your speed your ground speed etc, etc !

Just you wait. In 5 years time there’s going to be a documentary on Netflix called ‘The Canadian Potato Conspiracy’ whereby some locals stumble across a random patch of potatoes but one of them has a face, and he’s the leader of the potatoes. No one knows how (or why) it’s there.

A G-5 retrofitted with an analog autopilot can have some substantial non-intuitive operating quirks, especially with GPS input. It will work but you almost need a quick reference placard for the right combo of settings, set in the right order.

True. I'm not a fan of retrofitting with legacy autopilots.

@@angleofattack I don't actually know what you have planned for the upgrades. I just saw what looks like a G5 and an older aircraft so I thought I would mention it. (And I've just been flying in a recent retrofit of similar pieces.)
