I was an ordinary choir boy, in an ordinary church. Our Organist and Choirmaster took his job seriously. I enjoyed the music, the companionship. I never realised that the experience was foundational in a my young life.

Remember this group of choristers back in 1986 when I visited the cathedral several times before Christmas. Arthur Wills always trained them well. They would all be in their mid- forties now.

I would have been sixteen here, but girls weren't allowed in Cathedral Choirs in those days. My musical background enabled me to learn how to play a musical instrument as well as sing. I also have perfect pitch - a gift that has been put to good use in a church choir (alto).
