Anglican bishops and scientists explore the theme “Science and Faith for Enriching Human Life"

Anglican bishops, scientists, and theological educators gathered in Kenya (7-10 August 2023) to explore “Science and Faith for Enriching Human Life.” The goal was to discuss how faith and science communities can collaborate to understand the world and address global needs.
The event is part of the Anglican Communion Science Commission’s development, launched at the 2022 Lambeth Conference.
Hosted by the Right Revd Professor Joseph Galgalo at Saint Julian’s Centre, the workshops gathered Anglican perspectives on science and faith and set priorities for the next decade.
Themes included understanding different knowledge systems, the interplay of faith and science, science's role in church work, partnerships during the Covid-19 pandemic, and learning from indigenous communities. The Lambeth Call on Science and Faith was also discussed.
The process, facilitated by the “Anglican Thought Leadership Around Science” project, included international clergy and scientists. Dr. Jacquie Bay (University of Auckland) and Dr. Ednah Ojee (University of Nairobi) facilitated the workshop, with contributions from Professor Galgalo, Professor Andrew Briggs (University of Oxford), Dr. Heather Payne (Anglican Church in Wales), and Canon Stephen Spencer (Anglican Communion Office). Planning support came from the West Indies, Oceania, and the International Science Council.
