This game was made in 3 days for the Ludum Dare game jam that took place about a month ago. Which it won (in the Jam, not the Compo). Unsurprisingly. Obviously, they've continued to work on it a bit since the jam but the basic gameplay is the same. Pretty crazy. The theme of the jam was "Delay the inevitable" in case anyone is interested.

I think he meant that he didn't know how damage is affected by the firing spread. The game presents reduced spread as a purely beneficial mechanic, but doesn't flat out say that your damage is distributed throughout the arc, so you lose damage faster the farther you are from the target when you have a large arc. tl;dr: Taking more scopes appears to be sniper mode, letting you pick off targets at your farthest range, but the game doesn't explain it in that much detail.

It's basically a dice roll for range for each projectile 1,2 will hit min 3 4 will hit mid 5 6 will hit at max. I believe it's equal chance for any 1 projectile to go at any angle within the spread. Firepower is just the amount of projectiles per shot. If you can reduce your arc 2 times and get a range upgrade you definitely can snipe the king from the other side of the board. However a wide arc isn't necessarily bad, with firepower you can clear multiple pieces a turn. If you are 1 or 2 squares away even 100° arc will still be accurate enough to hit reliably. Just need to watch for pieces behind what you're killing, which Tom failed to do in each game.

they remind me of that old spongebob joystick game, as well as dig dug and another game i cant remember with cars on a 2d overview map (the "cars" look kindof like old F1 cars and a lot of the maps (from my memory) were very brown). I know im missing a ton of games that i have played and games i havent played/ dont even know about.

It's almost always Tom being Tom. I'm not sure how he never realised the incredibly obvious "wobbling means they're gonna move" thing.. but.. Edit: Hmm, nah, maybe I'm the stupid one not understanding how it works.. it seems different in later levels. I think it's a combination of them yeah, he probably COULD shoot to kill.. but only if there's only one thing threatening his space I think. I think if multiple are threatening, you maybe are forced to move? Edit 2!: I was curious so I downloaded the demo to try. Yeah, so you need to move to reload, so that's often why he's probly moving around a lot too, hadn't noticed that bit myself. And yeah, they can take you even if they're not wobbling, so Tom was playing fine mostly I reckon, I take back my complaints entirely

It doesn't look like you need to actually know chess all that well. Mousing over an opponent shows a little grid on the left hand side that displays its movement range. (in accordance with actual rules of chess, of course).
