he was originally called Wally (the artist is British). I think he changed it to Waldo because Wally is slang for silly person and he was getting sad and now British people just disrespectfully refuse to call him by his preferred name

I still don't understand why they changed his name to Waldo when they brought him over to the US. I'd like to know the story behind that one day, because it just seems really dumb and pointless. Were they trying to "Americanize" it or something? I've never met a single person in my life named Waldo. The only American of note named Waldo I can think of was Ralph Waldo Emerson, but he was some kind of philosophy guy.
