People need to stop equating being a good lyricist doesn’t mean ur a good rapper or make good music. 2pac, Kanye, and Travis Scott all make great music but as rappers they weren’t lyrically killing their counterparts. This doesn’t mean they can’t be lyrical or have nice wordplay or anything. And also at the same time they are great at writing. Being a great writer is more than just lyricism. A song like Sing about me I’m dying of thirst isn’t “lyrical” but the writing and storytelling is on another level. Being a good writer and lyricist are two different things and meanwhile u can be both and being a lyricist I will always give u credit more it doesn’t equate to being a better artist or mean u make better music. Through the wire has a couple witty lines but we like the production and the story he telling like how we would for 2pac.

Tupac is a poet. He put his emotions and story into his rap. Lyricist sometimes tell a story but with complex rhymes and lyrics you have to decipher. Like Eminem, Nas, or Kendrick. Poets have more feeling to their music like Kanye, Lauryn Hill, or J Cole. Poets and Lyricists are 2 different things

Wait a second! Pac and Cube? I’ll agree that Cube walked so Pac could run! I think Pac had better work ethic than Cube. I think to this day Cube have some kind of jealousy towards Pac. Rumors said that Cube stole certain lingo from Pac’s music to his. I think Pac felt that he was copycating him even Snoop Dogg. Pac felt everyone was taking bits and pieces from his music. Cube recently said he believe Pac ain’t better than him 🤷🏾‍♂️. Maybe during his NWA days and first three albums? Yea but after that it was a wrap for him and Pac kept coming with hard hitting music

I always say - if 2Pac had died in a non violent way we wouldn’t hold him to a Jesus level of adulation. It’s insane. If 2Pac had died of an illness a la Eazy or Pun - people wouldn’t deify him. I also believe people valorise his negative traits more than anything. Truth be told, if he was lyrically Talib Kweli nobody would have cared. When he was alive I mostly remember him for his antics and the only album that HIT was All Eyez On Me - which was anchored to the nihilistic and commercial excesses. People might cite MATW but that album was not the sound of Hip Hop when it dropped in 95

Tupac's lyricism comes from being able to take complex subject matter and make it digestible for the regular person. Lyricism isn't exclusive to just wordplay and basic metaphors. Back with so much more to that and that's what makes him a better Lyricist than the people who you consider Lyricists. So implying that Tupac and sexy red have the same kind of lyricism is an insane comparison

The only thing I disagree with Gully on is him saying 2pac is as basic as Soulja Boy and Sexyy Red. 2pac had actual substance to his lyrics and his words had a profound impact on the culture. So to say that is kinda disrespectful and downplays what he has offered to black culture as a whole. Considering soulja and sexyy contribute nothing of substance and nothing profound. Yeah, 2pac's not is not a lyricist, but he is not basic.
