People get upset that alcoholics are out of jail over and over. But we only have so much room and jails are full of low level drug offenders who threaten less on the roads than drunks do. We incarcerate people for small quantities of weed and pieces of foil with residue. We think the drugs are worse than alcohol. They’re both bad. Time to stop it at the source!!
@normandeplume753313 күн бұрын
"Time to stop it at the source"... do you mean outlaw the manufacture and distribution of alcoholic products? We tried that from 1920 until 1933. It was called Prohibition and it came under the 18th Amendment to the Constitution. That didn't work out too well and it was repealed in 1933 under the 21st Amendment. What it created was far more crime in bootlegging, racketeering, murder, and many other forms of organized crime (think Al Capone and his ilk). I don't think we need a return to all that, PLUS having drunk drivers still on the roads because making alcohol illegal does not make it unavailable. ...as we learned the hard way.

Good therapy would be of great benefit to this man, but only if he were willing to participate in the process and I don't think he is anywhere near that stage yet. How is the this guy going to BLAME a prosecutor for what happened to his sis 40 yrs ago, as if pros was judge, jury+exec? Also.. molestation/sex crimes were different 40 years ago.. a molester could get away with almost any sexual crime just by saying they didn't do it and turning the victim into the bad guy
@annettedebellefeuille71413 күн бұрын
This is an excellent and very accurate observation. I’m a retired civil trial attorney. The frustration over the acquittal of the child molester was very evident in Judge Middleton‘s voice. 40 years ago, many sex crimes were not reported, prosecuted, sometimes not even investigated. Sex crimes involving the testimony of children or minors is always problematic. Debate remains over the cost/benefit relating to obligating the victim to relive their trauma repeatedly with the police, the prosecutors, and eventually in the courtroom itself. Nevertheless, the defendant has no right whatsoever to harm other people, and to expose them to life-threatening behavior. Being a victim doesn’t mean you get to victimize others. Ever.
@GovilGirl13 күн бұрын
@annettedebellefeuille714 💯 most prosecutors wouldn't take on molestation cases. My county didn't. Found a lawyer and sued in civil court, did deposition, would not take an settlement, and took stand mysrlf and was better for it. (He deleted himself so biggest win!) I did trauma informed therapy and group therapy. Testifying is not reliving trauma, and that bs is mostly bc others are shameful and guilty and in denial. I fully knew the difference between child vs adult and who was in charge, knew I was not lying, not to embellish or diminish memories. I could follow the rules for Canasta. I even got a "what were you wearing?" question sneered at me which I quickly answered, "the required elementary student uniform was..." which got a gulp. Questions about my current sex life? "I am confused as to how what I do or do not do now might have affected what your adult client did to me as a child when I was aged seven. Could you explain the question better so I can understand (time travel)?" or "Why? Are you a pedo too?" I was beyond pissed. My attorney took my case for free and I love him still.

it is high time the right to bond is strengthened. our supposition of innocence is nothing more than a sentence on an old paper, and little more. if our legal system supposes innocence, then every defendant short of the most violent cases where bond is never afforded, should have a right to bond. the judges who subvert our legal protections , by assigning absurdly high bond are tyrants who use a cute little trick to enact their own idea of what Americans deserve. high bond is little more than revocation of constitutional protections, and it should sicken everyone with the mind to understand the weight of what it means, and more importantly what it could lead to. its like meddling with free speech to sure up ideology, its bad news, and labeling some speech as 'hate' or 'misinformation' is HIGHLY dangerous, just like labeling some people guilty before they are proven so.

So here's the thing about bond. The issue that takes up about half this video. Most reasonable people might ask the reasonable question. How does someone like this, have a bond? And why is the judge not able to just say no bond. Well it kinda boils down to prison overcrowding. Too few prisons, too little tax money to build more, due to constant Republican tax cuts. So with so many people breaking the law, and not enough prisons to house them all. They need to make room. This is one of the ways. In addition, its a revenue source for the city, when a judge sets a high bond, the defendant scrapes together enough then violates the bond terms. That's money to build more prisons.

With the record the judge just built, he should expect a motion to recuse himself, unless he really does have a reputation of being soft. But there’s a lot of personal hostility on both sides. The fact that he goes on and on with song lyrics just proves his pre-existing animus. And I’d be challenging that bond for the same reason, using his own words about disingenuous bonds that are meant to prevent release. Not a great performance.

Millions of people suffer childhood trauma, and the vast majority don’t commit multiple felonies. The defendant made sure to remind the judge about his sister’s abuse, wielding his trauma like a Get Out of Jail Free card. Lock him up.

As much as anyone in the comments section, I hate that so many repeat offenders get very little punishment and continue their criminal activities. But unless we are willing and committed to build and staff one helluva lot more prisons, not much will change. The existing system is already overcrowded and underfunded and crime is one of the few growth industries in our country.

Imagine if there were a prison system that'd reward shareholders for reducing recidivism rates!
