The faceplates were supposed to be interchangeable, but I don't think the custom faceplate options sold well.

The faceplates didn't sell well, but most people didn't bother with them cause this model 360 was the one notorious for Red Ring Of Death and so few people customized them as they were constantly being returned or sent to Microsoft for repairs. I got into 360 late in the generation and so I was introduced to the 250GB Black Elite model and never experienced RROD, thankfully.
