I might be totally wrong here, but the reason the sepukku scene with Mariko is so heavy is because as a christian she believes if she does it with no one to second her she goes to hell. When she realizes she will do it by herself, she thinks she is going to hell. And that's what Blackthorn is saving her from when he steps in to do it.

That would not only be too dishonorable for a samurai to go back on his word but as a Christian it would mean condemning Mariko to hell. Ishido on the other hand wouldn't care either way.

So many people don’t understand why they choose dying…but if you learn about Samurai (Bushi) life, you are gonna understand why. Most japanese weren’t Samurai families, and don’t choose how to die because their life were taken in the war easily at Sengoku period. In that time your life wasn’t for only yourself. So death of honor was rights that permitted to only Samurai families, it was special thing. That’s why their death had a power to move government.

As a Japanese person, I will explain. Mariko was the only target for the ninjas, but if they had just blasted the door open and broken in, they would have all been killed. You have to remember Japan during the Warring State Period was a chaotic and political mess. Its hard to unite Japan when you aren't ruthless and there are bound to be sacrifices. Also Toronaga is based on Tokugawa Ieyasu who by the way if you read history you will know he is smart as well as ruthless leader. He is the last to unite Japan and ultimately ended the long civil war of Japan, it came with lot of deaths in the way the pave the way for Japan's golden age of the Edo Period. People today cannot understand the idea of honor, seppenku and women during the time and never will, only by living during the time and culture will we truly know and experience what they felt.

She isn't trying to prove a point. This is winning strategy. If they let her go, all of the hostages are free to go, and without hostages Ichido loses much of his hold over the other nobke families. If they don't let her go, it makes clear that ge is holding them hostage, an unacceptable insult, and her death will lead to a revolt against Ichido. Either way, a revolt against his power.

@@JL-gx6os Agreed. Those women are superheroic and unrealistic. This show has some truly powerful and amazing women. Mariko can fight. She killed or gravely wounded a few soldiers during Toranaga's escape, and landed a few good hits on two of the castle guards in this episode. She was, however, simply unable to overcome 6 at once. That was realistic, thankfully, and she had some of the strongest scenes of any character in the show in this episode alone.

Interestingly enough, in the scene when Mariko is about to commit seppuku, she hears the wind, the same wind as when she was about to commit suicide while pregnant. Also, Mariko’s death was part of Toranaga’s plan; he knew that it would be challenging to get hostages out without Ishido killing anyone, and he knew that Mariko’s death would shatter ishido’s reputation and would spark outrage in Osaka. I also believe that Mariko knows her death is near; she understands in her last moments that her death was part of the plan for Toranaga to gain the upper hand. Moreover, Ishido couldn't just let all the hostages go since he would list his leverage in the war; he would just kill them all if he didn't have any use for them, so that's why he decided to launch the attack on the end.

Ned Stark was honorable in a goody two shoes, foolish sort of way and he comes up with plans and hope for the best that they work like tell someone what he's planning. Toranaga was honorable in a ruthless, cunning sort of way, making contingency plans ahead when one fails, and is willing to sacrifice anyone to achieve them like his vassals. Those guys are far apart in so many ways.

Ieyasu literally told his son to commit seppuku despite acknowledging he did nothing wrong solely because people thought his son *might* commit treason in the future. He was suspected to have been the one who manipulated the events that led to Oda Nobunaga'sdeath in what would have been a 4d chess betrayal. Shogun hints at this too. Oda in this series is Lord Kuroda. And all of that is just the tip of the iceberg.

Hiromatsu's death in ep.8 was meaningful for the story. I heard the script was originally proposed by Mr. Nishioka, who played Hiromatsu. However, I think Mariko's death in ep.9 revealed the scriptwriter's confusion. It feels like a forced collage of episodes from Hosokawa Gracia, who became the model. First of all, in Japanese history, women cannot commit seppuku. (There are only a few uncertain records) Moreover, she is a Christian. I feel like they created an impossible story to portray a ``strong woman.'' This is not a criticism of this drama, but a complaint against this novelist. Whole things in this drama are creation to emphasize the exotic side of Japan. I hope that viewers will understand that the reality of Japanese history is different. MURDER is a mortal sin. Killing is not always considered murder, especially by the Catholic church of the day. Killing to defend you life, anothers life, land, country or honor were notable exceptions. Suicide on the other hand was NEVER not a mortal sin. Lord Kiyama could take penance and be forgiven for chopping Marikos head off, Mariko on the other hand would burn in hell for the suicide.

Yall, suicide is not a rational act. You can’t reason anyone out of it. It’s about feeling trapped in a despair that feels permanent, even if it’s temporary. An unrelenting medical depression is the inability to feel hope, to feel worthy of help, to feel as if you have a right to exist. I’ve been there, I was able to get help, but the kinds of meds and therapy that exist for chronic depression don’t work for everyone. So don’t feel angry at a suicide. They don’t have the same motivation to do so. Mariko has her personal motivations, and Toranaga and his clan are specifically under threat of being ordered to die by the council. Historically hostages waited out the scenario and were well treated (unless the bargain went sour).

The show is amazing and it got me to read the book it is based on by episode 6. They moved around the timings but apart from two VERY major moments, did in the end get it all packed in so far. I can only hope with one episode left that it ends on a high or adds them in! The only thing I dislike about this show is they stripped john right back to the bones, took away his agency and made him a bit whiney in the middle of the show. The book shows with certainty that he can fight (tho ofc with swords not as well) and his bravery is without question. Many characters men and women openly respect him, and behind closed doors appreciate the effort he makes to try and assimilate. Omi / Yabu / Kiku / Fuji.

I’m sure a whole lot of y’all Crimson Cried. Welcome to the Crimson Herring. Despite my criticism in previous episodes about how Mariko the wife continued to handle her domestic affairs, especially after how the truth of as to why she was kept alive has laready been revealed; I do have all the respect in the world for Mariko, the Retainer. She fulfilled her duty and managed to say out loud what every Lord in Osaka was feeling but were too afraid to say. And she was committed to everything to the end. (Minor Tangent: I am happy the gate scene was not a "girl-power mopping the floor with all those men" moment) Now all of Osaka's Lords are soured against Ishido; and Ochiba might have to put the engagement on hold in order to Mourn Mariko. Her mission is a success. Speaking of which, it’s so heartwarming and heart breaking that “Leave us” scene between Mariko and Ochiba. I'm Happy Ruri-hime did not just outright hate Mariko for being her father's daughter; but their exchange was so heartbreaking as they both knew each other so well and what the other was doing and them pleading with each other to make the step to end the hostilities, and saying their goodbyes like that... it was made clear: Ochoba was willing to do anything to continue on living, while Mariko was samurai through and through and was trying to convince her that the duty is what is most important. The fact that Ochiba-Sam’s had to turn away to hide her tears and she can’t maintain her mask )9 fold fence) was just Gold. i think I'm sweating through my eyes. And Blackthorne finally doing the right thing and deciding to Second Mariko, instead of just dismissing all of Japan's customs and cultures as BS , that was the best gift he could have ever given her. So much so that despite my misgivings about Mariko the wife; their last night of intimacy was completely EARNED; despite all your valid concerns which I mostly agree with.🥹🥹🥹 And thankfully, Ishido stepped in, because Blackthorne was already shown as not capable of properly wielding that sword. Yabushige's betrayal was to Kidnap Mariko AND not lay a hand on any of the VIPs (it was shown on screen that Shizu and Kiri was not killed when the shinobi identified them in their sleep). They need to make it look like some bandits or assassins got to her while she was sneaking off in the evening despite getting her permits: that was why the shinobi did not kill her right away, but rather were trying to take her away. Mariko became aware of this right away and chose where to meet her end: she did not go to the gate where she would get captured as Yabushige intended. Having grown up there with Ochiba, she knew what would happen when she chose to hole up in the store house.

Too many people are being unfair to you guys, I think you're absolutely within your rights to disagree with the decisions that some characters make while still enjoying the story. It actually gets so frustrating reading people's comments who either don't understand or haven't actually watched the full reaction try to tell us things that we've already said and understood. We absolutely love the show but, as I said in the first episode, I won't treat the culture as a sacred cow that cannot be criticised. - Steejo

@@SuzySteejo Consistency will always matter more to people than if you try to make everyone happy. If you sanitize your opinions or censor yourselves, you take the fun out of content creation while alienating those who came to your channel to get your genuine take (the majority of your viewers). I think this show is absolutely excellent and I revel in calling out people who are unreasonably negative towards it but that's the opposite of what you're doing. You're getting invested in the characters and following their journey while bringing your own perspectives to the table. Trying to appease as many people as possible is a fool's errand and ultimately pointless. Trust your instincts, sincerity has its growing pains when you're still finding your audience (and they're still finding you), but it has by far the best returns in the long run.

Blackthorne offering to second Mariko was so romantic. He doesn't believe in seppuku but he was willing to do that for her, for her peace of mind. He did what her husband never would/could. I cried throughout this episode, it was so emotional. I blame Toranaga more than Yabushige, people are dying because of his schemes. It started with his son, then his best friend and now Mariko, he will sacrifice anyone and i'm mad at him. He kept Yabushige in the dark knowing that he would crumble, its his fault

She also committed adultery, she doesn't respect her parents. Furthermore, she allowed someone else's husband to steal someone else's wife. Does all of this make sense to Catholics?
