The first version was introduced in 1986. The D version adds distance info. It tells the camera the focus distance which helps with correct flash exposure.

Hi Ken, this is an old video now and not sure if you will reply but I'm a dog walker and I love photography. I own a D4 and am stuck between getting the 80-200 af-s or the 180mm f2.8. I know the 80-200 is prob more useful but heavy gear really hurts my back, I already have to carry another heavy bag packed with dog walking gear. What do you think is best? Back ache and versatility or the lighter 180mm (assuming it can keep up with the dogs)?

My camera is the D7100. Currently, I have only a 50mm f1.4 AI-s and a 105mm f2.5 AI-s. Looking at getting either a zoom (but haven’t decided on a range, yet. Would love the 80-200 f2.8, but might get more use out of a 24-85 or 16-60. However, wold also consider more primes, as I’ve never had a zoom in more than 40 years of this stuff. Looking also at the 180mm f2.8D or maybe a 300mm f4.5 AI-s, as I used to have one of those back in the day. What is your opinion of Nikon’s 18-300 or 28-300, and also the Tamron 16-300?
@annakmet84824 жыл бұрын
Hi Ken, I'm looking at the 180mm 2.8D or a Sigma 150mm 2.8 non OS for indoor swim events and other indoor sports. Which one would have the faster AF? I want something lighter than a 80-200 or 70-200 and I prefer primes. Do you have any other recommendations for indoor sports? The Nikon 85 1.8d is my other choice, but it will be on the short side for me, and I'd have to crop.

I have a question, appreciate if you could help. I am looking into buying the pre 1988. I have read that it is slightly better than the other two for astrophotography. Is there any truth to this? Or is it just that some copies are less sharp and have more chromatic aberration the other copies?

I bought 2 copies on ebay (180mm AF-N, 2nd version), unfortunately with a problem regarding the mechanics with a stiff focus. Is this a common issue with the older version of this type of lens? My friends all have the AF-D versions and are completely happy with it. So a short comment would be helpful, whether the AF-D version ist more reliable in general compared to the older versions. Thanks!

I just got the 180 2.8 today (non-textured version) as well as a 135 f2, both for an amazing deal. I was worried about the 180 2.8 because the person who had it didn't take the best care of it, and the various elements of glass have dirt on them. Oh my goodness. Doesn't make a gosh darn difference. The thing is so tack sharp. I took a photo of my 1.5 yr old and I can count the individual baby hairs on his face. Seriously, such an amazing lens for portraiture. I am absolutely blown away.

Hi Angry, I love my Nikon 180 - 2.8.However my 180 2.8 is terribly soft at 12 - 14 ft. focal distance; it's very sharp at closer or farther distances.Can you explain this please.?!!!My version is old with very narrow focus ring ( no rubber surface ), no M/A switch.ThxDoug
@kathodosdotcom8 жыл бұрын
+Douglas Mann it should be, its not a close-in lens, same with the 80 200 2.8. Nikon warms users of this. what, only at 12-14 feet, .......and you tested that on a tripod vs. 8-12 feet? :/

How does these compare with the Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 VR @ 180-200mm f/2.8 ?
@andreik30965 жыл бұрын
70-200 are great, event on vr1 one af is very fast, but man, they are really longer (bigger). with 180 you still can walk on streets, 70-200 vr start to resemble a bazooka on a ff, it wouldn't event fit into all (smaller) camera bags :-P

sizewize you'd take 200 f4 on the street most of the time in day time, it's sooo compact, but after the sunset you'd agree to carry more weight/size for extra stops. so, both are usefull and pretty distinct

Portraits of my children are so wonderful that i want to cry. Thanks for convinsing me to buy this lens. I totally agree with you. According to DXO-Marks this lens is just a piece of shitty glass and a totally failure because it does not score so very high in "dxomarks-sharpness". But that is so wrong and you are totally right when you say they are like alcoholics judging a fine vine according to alcohole content. This lens makes portraits from dx-cameras really shine.

I would like to get the 180mm 2.8D but I'm a bit turned off because of the fact I may damage my camera if I accidentally leave the lens in MF when the camera is in AF. Is this true for all AF-D lenses? Or are there some lenses (like the 180mm) where you don't have to worry about it? Thanks
@kathodosdotcom9 жыл бұрын
Chris Hay wellll, you just dont do that, leave it always on AF if you want a throw a piece of tape over it. only SOME AF-D lenses have this switch, not a lot. well the older one in this video does NOT have that switch
@chrishay54429 жыл бұрын
Theoria Apophasis I thought about that, but don't you need to put the lens on M to unlock the ring for the times you need to focus manually? Or can you turn it freely when the camera is on M and lens on A?
@kathodosdotcom9 жыл бұрын
Chris Hay the lens wont turn on A
@chrishay54429 жыл бұрын
Theoria Apophasis From what I understand. The lens needs to be set to M [To unlock the focus ring] and so does the camera [To disengage the AF screw]. I'm just talking about the occasional time where I'm manually focusing at night or something and I accidentally forget to turn both back to AF when I'm done. It seems like such a simple mistake can easily stuff things up. Unfortunately with my clumsiness, I think Ill stick to AFS lenses. Thanks. Always enjoy your videos BTW :)

I own one of those 180mms! I always wondered if somone can make a video comparing the optical quality to the 80-200 2.8D zoom. It has been my observation that people skipped over this little miracle lens for the zoom thinking it would cover all of the bases so why stunt oneself with just a 180 with the same 2.8 aperture.
