Ken, about one month ago I bought the DX 35mm f1.8 lens and it sure takes nice photos. I bought it on eBay for $159.99 shipping included and no tax brand new. Thanks for your recommendations.

Whats the best 35 /33 mm for the fuji x system? I want to use it mainly for portraits, art photos and also general walk around lens since I love the 50mm view. I would also like to use it for video. And I hate chromatic aberration :D

Can I just say thank you - after 8 years, your videos (including the others on your channel) are such a good reference for me. I live in Malta, so need to import anything I buy - thus can't 'try before I buy'. I shot Nikon for years, bought a used GFX50s since, and have bought all my lenses (not that many hahaha $$$) used after watching your reviews (some GF, some adapted Nikon) - including my dear 85mm planar Zeiss and will buy the 35mm f2 right now as I just found it for sale and think it will be a perfect walkaround lens. Much thanks for all the great advice.

I'm a huge fan, just curious about your thoughts on the Zeiss classic lenses not being weather/dust resistant. Have you had any issues with dust inside any of your Zeiss classic lenses? Thank you for your time!
@oliverlison

Just seeing your comment. I have used two 50mm f 1.4 lenses and two 25mm f2 lenses. My first 50mm sample had issues right from the beginning. There were particles inside and on the aperature blades too. Eventuelly, It sliped out of my camera back when getting off my care and dropped it and onto tarmac (ouch) The lens was out of whack. Insurance paid for the repair to get the lens fully (also cosmetically) repaired. Zeiss left a tiny mark on the barrel but the lens has been clean inside since then. The tolerances are very tight on the lenses. Not a lot of dust should get inside unless you expose it to such environments.

Ken, I listen to no one but admit I bought the Zeiss Distagon 35mm f2 on your recommendation. You were 100% correct. It's fabulous. Sharp but the contrast is even better; magnificent and the build quality is unmatched. My favourite landscape lens.

You've really hit a nerve with your video and the excellent link regarding micro contrast, depth, and its relation to the number of glass elements. I bought the 35mm f2D off your recommendation - it has become one of my favourite lenses. Could you recommend a decent 50mm preferably from Nikon with AF?Currently got the AF-S 50mm 1.8G and 1.4G (we all make mistakes...). They're fine, the 1.8 is sharp but they're somewhat flat... Really appreciate your advice!

+Franz Steinberger heehehehehe, and its a CHEAP lens too. oooooh, WITH AF ehh?? well actually those AFS 50 arent bad at all. since you want AF 50s, thats a problem, but the cheapie 50mm 1.8 D AF is great however all the GREAT 50s are MF lenses.

Yannick Khong Thanks for the feedback. Then I'll just have to decide which of my two 50s (AF-S 1.4/1.8) to trade in for it... The rational choice would be the 1.4G as it is (in some respects) inferior to the 1.8G. Somehow cannot justify 3 50s ;-)

I am wondering why huge groups of people disregard the quality, sharpness and mention awful bokeh of Nikkor 35mm f/2D. Some reviewers say it's good for DX or low res/film cameras but once you come to 24MPix and higher it;s not ready to provide image quality and spending extra money for new 35mm f1.8G FX is way to go. I can;t find any reasonable side-by-side comparison with full crop images. Honestly I don;t care about sharpness in corners, this will not be landscape lens I would use, but rather wide portrait lens for events with shallow depth of field and background separation. Is it really good or has huge weaknesses ? What it is best purpose for it as its in this list ?

Hey I just started watching your videos and have learned a lot about micro contrast and depth. I then went through all my lenses to see which ones would be flat in your eyes, and i'm looking pretty clean, with the exception for the newer tamron macro (i valued the VC for wedding purposes). The only lens that i really still need is a 35, I do a lot of faster paced things such as wedding events and am not ready to forgo AF. That being said, I'm curious how you really feel about the new Tamron 35 from the angle that it has 10 elements (2 aspherical and 2 ed)? I know you have spoken positively of these lenses. I fully understand the properties of the nikkor f/2 but I don't think i want to stop it down enough for the minimum IQ that i've come to expect from my lenses.

The first lens I purchased for my Nikon F body was a Nikkor 35mm f/2. That lens was my favorite for years until I replaced it with my new favorite, the Nikkor 35mm f/1.4 AIS. I use it in a 35/85/180 lens kit. The first lens I purchased for my Leica M6 body was a Zeiss 35mm f/1.4 ZM Distagon. I use it in a 21/35/90 lens kit. I also own a 35mm f/3.5 Super Takumar that I use on a Pentax Spotmatic as a backup to my more expensive equipment. On my Argus C3, I use a 35mm f/4.5 Tele-Sandmar that I use in a 35/50/100 kit. I have a Vivitar 35mm f/2.8 lens with an M42 mount that was given to me. However, I do not use this lens because it produces poor quality images.

Question, what do you think the "best bang for your buck" would be for a Nikon DX user when it comes to deciding between a 35mm f/1.8G or a Tamron 15-30mm f/2.8 VC? I realize they're not the same focal lengths but thought the Tamron would cover more of the "Normal" view range for DX users. Also, the cheapest I can find the 35mm f/1.8G lately is $199.99 new while I've located some Tamron 15-30mm f2.8 VCs for around $799.99.

You are missing the new 35mm 1.8 ED FX lens. I have a copy and surprisingly it's got the leica dreamy pop at f/1.8-f/2. From f/2.8 on it's razor sharp. Strangely enough my first copy sucked due to inconsistent focus but the 2nd one I got, was WOW! Check it out, you might chuck quite a few of your 35mm out after trying one of those.

Hey, Ken. Bought a 35mm 1.8g DX to go with my D7100. Problem is that this lens is back focusing a lot. I went to the AF fine tune and had to place the correction on the minus 16 mark. I'm aware that some lens require the fine tuning but I've never heard of a new and modern lens that required a tuning as high as 16 (the maximum amount is 20). However, after I've dialed the -16 on the AF fine tuning the lens is working fine, pretty sharp. Do you think that I should still exchange it?

I love my Nikkor 35mm f2d. Been shooting it on my Nikon D600 and Nikon D850 for a while and it makes the perfect allround prime lens. The only complaint I have is that the connection between the rear of the lens and the camera has no rubber sealing. Been shooting in the desert and I had to add an external protection. I shot in a sandstorm and the protection worked well, but I would have loved a sealed lens.

Awesome review. I have two 35mm on my Fuji Jupiter 12 f2.8 and newer f1.7, but they’ve never quite hit the sweet spot. I bought the Nikon achromat lens from Lomography you reviewed a while ago, but their adapter was too tight. I recently discovered K&F M18111 Nikon G/F/AI/AIS/D Adapter, which is a dream. So your review opens me up to collecting Nikon lenses and using my beautiful achromat more often.

+Gee Aaa If you don't want any loss in quality. Hoya HD clear protection glass filters are the best. Also known as Hoya HD protector. It is a high quality clear glass just for protection only, that is easy to clean, extra hardened glass, anti scratch/stain resistance. But yeah clear protector are more expensive though. But are worth it. It cost from $25 - $55 a piece dependent on the size of the filter you need.

Theoria Apophasis It is Eight-Layer Multi-Coating clear glass though. I've used them and seems like Hoya is the best in clear protective filters. Which does not affect the quality of the lens. One day I will have the 24-70mm Nikon lens and will put a Hoya HD protector on it and shoot all day long.

The Fijifilm X Series is a crop sensor system. If you wanted to compare like for like you should have reviewed the 23mm lens which acts like a 35 when on the x system. The fujinon 35mm lens is an extremely nice lens but gives a field of view of 50mm on an X camera. If you want 35mm results you should use a 23mm Fujinon lens.

how is it doing on FX bodies ? Honestly did you find any weaknesses compared to 50mm ? I have 50mm f/1.4 and would love to get 35mm. This f2 has terrible reviews on bokeh, sharpness and overall IQ on FX. I assume it;s a lot of marketing to push those highly expensive f1.4 lens that's heavy as well and I am rather looking for something lightweight. Any sample images to share ? I am not looking for corner sharpness, it will be out of focus background separation that I intent to use it for. Would love to hear some hands on review from people owning it.

@@OscarHanzely I bought the 35mm f2d but had to send it back. I loved the size and the rendering but the autofocus just did not deliver on my d750. It missed focus to much but when focus was nailed the images were beautiful. Too bad!

The only 35mm lens I have is a $90 Huonghu 35mm F2 af lens. Well that's the Breaking Wind in the room moment. I will say that I quite like it. Made in China and the Huonghu people are going to be big in the future I predict. OK, now I leave. I bought it when I had been drinking. Looks cool with the Nikon HB-47 lens hood on it.

The 35mm f/1:2 D (Made in Japan) is NOISY, they say. I wanted to buy it over the DX, (reason: Made in China) but the posting (by DigitalRev TV) discouraged me. After I bought the B/New silent DX 1:1.8 -- which is still in the mail-- I saw your posting and wonder if, outside your line of euphemisms about the performance of the D lens, you found it to be mechanically noisy, as well; which is bad for video taking, I suppose. Your "angry" opinion, maestro, if you don't mind. Thanks.

I think as a communicator you should pay more attention to your oral/speaking skills. It is very hard to follow you since you speak so fast and with so little articulation. When you said the name of the Nikon lense I thought you were speaking Croatian honestly. LOL besides from that, good review and nicely picked models.
