You said the 80-200 has "prime-like qualities"....You are so right. It is an impressive lens for the price. I took a few photos at a college football game this past weekend with it and I was impressed. I told you about me dropping it a few months ago too. No issues afterwards. It's a beast.

I got the Tamron a month ago on your recommendation. Yes I probably should have got the 80-200 for pure image quality but I made an informed decision thanks to your previous videos :) I gota say, I am blown away by the tamron. I can sit at 2.8 and snap away happy and i'm getting some seriously sharp photos to my eye. Glad I didn't have to spend the big bucks on the Nikkor 70-200 vrII and I don't plan on it now no matter how much coin I have spare.

The Nikon 80-200 has sharp edged aperture blades and therefore creates amazing sunstars. That is defintely something I miss on all newer lenses and the reason for me keeping the old Nikkor. The drawback on the 80-200, are the long and the short end: they are not sharp. You can use this lens from about 90-185mm wide open. Shooting with 5.6 and above minimizes that problem. I use it mainly for portraits and swimming competitions with f2.8-f4. It‘s fast enough for that kind of sport. Everything faster won‘t work. But the sunstars make it a keeper and it‘s really sharp, even on f2.8 🙂.

Thanks for all your insight man. I purchased the push/pull AF-D version of the 80-200 for $375 shipped with lens-hood and case. I tried it out today, it´s a beast and heavier than a blunderbuss. My right arm is sore but my heart is happy. Couldn´t find a used 2 ring version for the life of me but i´m sure this one will keep me happy for many years to come.

I use my 80-200 2.8 to shoot watersports - kiteboarding, windsurfing, and regattas. also for weddings and portraits from time to time. it's a pretty heavy piece of machinery but it is a marvelous lens. too bad I kinda damaged my copy which is really really old by the way because when you are out on the water especially when it's really windy, you will be bobbing up and down constantly on your boat and your camera equipment which are precision machines are taking all that beating. now the lens does not focus properly at 200mm but remains supreme at 80-135mm. needs to send it in for repairs but can't find the time right now :(

Never thought about the 80-200mm NOT having a lens hood. Now that you mention it...never saw one in any ad. However, I guess I was lucky...when I got mine, the seller included a HB-7 hood, and it fits perfect. Same crinkle finish as well...so its a good combination if you want a hood. I recommend YES...get this hood!! Its the TITS! Hehehe

Hey Ken, what are your thoughts on the AFS version of the 80-200 2.8? I have the AF-D, and I see the AFS every once in a while at Roberts (I'm local) and I've been thinking about trading in my AF-D for the AF-S if it's considerably faster autofocus and if the glass is indeed similar enough. I've used the 70-200 VR and I don't like it, so I'm looking at the older one.

Hi, I recently discovered your vlogs, and I realized immediately that you have a vast experience in terms of material and repair, I bought a nikkor 80-200 f2.8 push pull for a very low amount, 250 $ on ebay, it is in a cosmetic condition impeccable focuses well, no fungus or scratches but I discovered today when I put it to the test at night, that I can not focus on distant / infinite subjects because I do not have enough mechanical focus ... you can give me an idea of what it might be and if I myself can solve this problem, thank you very much from now on, continue the excellent videos, they are a great help!

Hey I recently picked up a 80-200 2.8D and it is pretty fantastic, I use it on my D7100. I do however seem to be having a issue with it. If I focus right on a eye of something, it seems to back focus just a little bit. so for a animal for instance if I focus on the eye it will more often hit the ears... which is not ideal. So my question is, is there a way to calibrate the 80-200 or fine tune its focus settings on my camera so that it will focus correctly? The usable photos I have been getting out of the lens are brilliant. but thats the trick... the USEABLE ones. many of them end up being a little too out of focus for me liking. this makes me pretty sad because its a great lens when it works. Also i know this is a old video but I am hoping that maybe you have the time to point me in the right direction :D

I'm looking to get that exact combo. Right now shooting with Nikon D5300 with couple kit lens and a 50mm 1.8g. Been with this set up for about 2yrs now looking to upgrade to d7100 bc its basically the same as d7200 but cheaper used also better AF System and internal focus motor which means I can use great older lens for a super cheap price.

@@ericwashington6037 yea the D7100 is a brilliant crop sensor camera. really the only other DSLR I would choose above it would be the D500. As for the 80-200 it is fantastic. I also suggest getting the 17-55 2.8. its a DX lens but its absolutely amazing. in regards to the issue I was asking about above I ended up messing with the AF-fine tuning options on the camera. after several hours of tests and tweaks I eventually got it to where it needed to be.

+Hector Merced it isnt an issue, the lens is designed NOT to be used close in (about 20 feet) Nikon warns of this, to make it CLOSER, theyd have to change the optical design of the entire lens, optical design is like solving a rubiks cube upside down underwater its not a defect, its a necessity of the design.

This is what Rockwell says about this lens - This is an outstanding, advanced, complex, heavy and expensive lens, flawed by spotty manufacturing and a fuzzy ghost image shooting into the sun. Even with these flaws it's a very, very sharp lens with relatively low distortion. Heck, it's one of the sharpest lenses I've ever used, bar none.

Dear mr. Angry, I was planning on getting the 80-200 f2.8, until I found out there is a slightly newer, discontinued, af-s version of this lens too. Do you have any experience with this lens and if yes: does it offer the same image quality as the af-d version? I'm using a d750, but I'm mainly interested in the af-s because of the lack of the screwdriving sound, in case of wildlife photography. Thanx a lot!

+mrxram correct, same image quality and its a bit popular, and likely bit more expensive. however the screw drives are far far more long lived and reliable because there is no damn motor inside to break and if you GET an AF-S, its already got an old motor in it :/ for action and (what kind of wildlife?????) fast moving wildlife (birds etc), get the Tamron 70 200 2.8 VC for $1200

Which is best the Nikon AF-S 80-200 f2.8 or the AF-D 80-200 f2.8? Also I don't want a push-pull zoom.
@mikaelsoppa

Ken Rockwell recommend the first one if you can afford it, but not optically, only in terms of usability. Optically the AF-D is just as good as the AF-S. Look here: www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/80200afs.htm

Hello Mr. Angry, I need your support, what do you think about using any of both lenses on a half frame body? is it suitable? or I should go for something different starting from 60mm which will be 90mm on my camera? I'm planning to go later for full frame, but for now I don't have budget, so I want to invest 1st on lens then later on body when i'll get better money, I'm doing portrait/wedding photography, thanx a lot

I apologize in advance if you've covered this, but I'm still at a loss as to why the push-pull is not as well thought of as the $600 version. I know you said they all have the same optics and that they're still making the one you're recommending. You're mind moves fast and I never remember hearing why you gave the nod of the more expensive version versus the push-pull. Thanks in advance
@isobitis69
@isobitis69 8 жыл бұрын
+charlatan19 had the push-pull AF-D in the past and now the 2 ring version. This newer version is far more comfortable in handling and has the absolutely necessary tripod ring. BUT, even though they claim to have same optics like the push pull, in my eyes push pull was superior in image quality across the whole range.

What are your thoughts on the last iteration of the 80-200 2.8 (the one with the af-s motor). I saw several reviews and comparison that state the af-s is actually sharper wide open than the D version. Is it worth getting the af-s one for just couple hundred dollars more ? Thanks in advance :)

I have bought and used every AF-D en non-D version - second hand. Only the AF-S version had usable 200mm wide open AF accuracy. All the others had terrible back focus. Can't be coincidence. I always thought "maybe the next version won't have it". I was wrong. Only my current 80-200 2.8 AF-S autofocuses flawlesly at 200mm. After some googling, the problem is not uncommon apparently.

Looking into getting a used 80-200mm. As far as I can tell there are 3 variants: - AF-D push-pull zoom (around 300,- used) - AF-D 'normal' zoom (around 600,- used) - AF-S 80-200 (not 70!) for around 900,- used. Which one to get? Thanks, man! (It'll be sitting on a D750 and a D610 - please don't judge me on the last one ;-))

I've not seen you mention the discontinued 80-200/2.8 AFS. I use to own one and found the following compared to the D: AF was faster thanks to the SWM, could accept Nikon's AFS tele-extenders, build quality (except the tripod collar) a little better than the D, close focus at 200 was definitely better wide open than the D. Overall sharpness was as good or slightly better than the D. Main drawback was that it was slightly bigger and heavier. Any thoughts about this lens?

+Ravi Shankar my $0.02, the 70-300mm VR is a great general purpose lens with fast autofocus and works with all the DSLR Nikons, even the motorless models. Downside, I've got a 100-300mm Ai 5.6 that's sharper. Plastic construction is another negative. 4.5 variable versus 2.8 constant. It's a great lens, in it's class, but this is a different class of lens. Mustang vs Maserati, Fiero vs. Ferrari - not a fair comparison
