In the last 20 years 4 lenses were developed by Nikon that could have easily replaced this 80-200 f/2.8 af-D zoom from 1997. In defiance to changing technology this 80-200 continues to be in production.
Why do photographers and videographers continue to pick up this lens? What makes this particular design so special? And can it’s optical quality still hold up with the demands of modern sensors?
Check out our latest vintage lens review and see photo and video samples of this lens.

I have the 80-200 F2.8 and I have taken some of my greatest photos with them. The optical quality is stupidly, ridiculously sharp, so sharp that some have thought that I took the photos with a high megapixel camera when i took them with my D3s. And yes, I bought it brand new direct from Japan.

Thank you for writing! Yes many photographers do the same and are pleasantly surprised by the quality and price. While the latest 70-200s (FL, Z) have stepped it up a level and it's focus breathing issues are non-existent. But this lens is a special gem in Nikon's line-up and easily recommended.Thanks for watching!

Great video. I own the slightly older push pull design 80-200 f2.8 and it's the sharpest lens I have ever owned. There is something about the way it renders that even when watching videos shot with it in lower resolution they somehow look like 4K at first glance. As I shoot handheld I'm not too bothered by the push pull. It's definitely well dampened. One thing I can't do with this lens is to shoot using EV. Very quickly I found out that I'm missing some crucial muscles to oparte it this way 🤣

@@studiotrejo3047 i have just replaced my older push/pull lens with this two touch design one. I have read they share optical design and should be near identical. I'm a bit dismayed as I found my (very clean) copy of this lens to be really disappointing. It's still as sharp as my older one but that's where similarities end. The chromatics aberations are shocking wide open 😢 the bokeh in many scenarios is simply awful. I think I might have a dud. My older lens had no discernible CA wide open at all and the bokeh was superb.
@studiotrejo3047

@@LiveMyJourneyTom Oh no! What a terrible experience. Something sounds off. Like maybe there is an element misaligned? I’m having that issue right now with my Olympus 50mm 1.4. I cleaned it but infinity was off so I had to adjust it. Now the infinity is perfect but I’m getting crazy amounts of aberration which I didn’t have before. I’ll be opening it up again. So unfortunately it sounds like it is a dud but if you still have your push pull version I would do a controlled test shooting the same subject and see if the defects are there for both lenses. Let me know how it turns out.
@LiveMyJourneyTom
@LiveMyJourneyTom Жыл бұрын
@@studiotrejo3047 I have had a lot of variations in different copies of some lenses. Some of it can quality control and some age. When my GAS was under controll for a while I have thined my collection significantly and the 80-200 f2.8 didn't make the cut. I still have ok copies of 80-200 and 70-210 f4. Now I've done more testing the broken bokeh I attributed to some intermittent issue with my shutter. The CA and softness on f2.8 is still there in some lighting conditions. At f4 it's a different lens. But I've noticed that if I nudge the aperture ring a bit towards f4 but not enough to notice much loss of light the problems mostly go away. Could the aperture open too wide? Not a major problem for me but my copy is not even close to parfocal and the focus breathing is very pronunced. Next in line is Tokina AT-X 100-300 f4 which I'm expecting to be pretty awfully 😂

@@LiveMyJourneyTom I agree about the "focus breathing" on this lens. You can see it in my test video in the first minute of the review. As I changed focus distance you can see how pronounced it is. On the other hand the it doesn't have "lens breathing" when shooting photos at close distances like the later models of Nikons 70-200's. Version II of the 70-200 was the worst.

Until my retirement last year it was always mounted on one of my cameras for shooting weddings. I'll make a bold statement, between 80 & 135mm there is no need for a prime when you own this lens. I do like my 80-200. To be honest, it's a bit soft wide open, I tend to shoot it at f3.3-4 and still sometimes have to apply a bit of local contrast and sharpness in LR. But the bokeh is great, the relatively low weight and size (compared to modern 70-200s) is great, the build is tank-like, and the value proposition is insane. (Currently £300-ish, less for the push-pull).

More or less same start. I do not remember anymore if it was 97 or early 98 when I bought mine with a Nikon F5 (I still have the camera). Sold it to buy the first AFS version of this zoom. Sold the first AF-S before (serious problems started to appear as a consequence of the failing teflon bearings of the motor) to buy the first VR version of more or less the same zoom (70-200). Sold it about three years ago to buy the FL version (for about 1900€ new). No competition between the old AF-D and the last FL. End of the story. And also no competition with one of the few AF-D Nikon lenses I still own (most of the others are manual): the 180mm f/2.8 which you can buy used at less than half of the price of the used AF-D zoom (supposing that somebody is really prepared to spend 600$ to buy the AF-D) and is twice as good. Did I get your attention now?

@@patriziodalessandro1693 Very nice to to share your experience with the Nikon Zooms beginning to end. The AFS version of this lens did have issues with the motors dying out. Great idea to upgrade! The opinion of many is that the FL is the gold standard in zooms from any company. So cheers that you own one. But I never compare zooms to primes because they are so different in construction and design, even if the prime shares a focal length with the zoom. The convenience of a zoom will make this lens a viable purchase even at $600 even if the prime is twice as good, which I'm sure it is. Either way thank you for your comment, cheers!

@@studiotrejo3047 My pleasure, especially when somebody is interested in listening a different opinion,,, Quite a few years ago I started with prime lenses as everybody else at that time, then moved to zoom lenses, then again went back to primes. As I said, I still keep a few selected zoom lenses. For example I still have the AF-S 17-35mm f/2.8D IF-ED, which I bought around twenty years ago trading in the AF 20-35 f/2.8D, because I managed to have the ultrasonic motor replaced a few years ago - I was told it was the last piece in stock. The only zoom that could be of any interest to me today is the Nikkor Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S.. In general, I (personally) do not see any particular reason to buy a zoom lens, unless it has a very specific and well defined use. I might simply be a maniacal perfectionist, but as somebody, who knew better than me, said, my legs are still working...

@studiotrejo3047 Ай бұрын
Very nice! I had the same two lenses with my Nikon D7000. The 18-200 was my walk around lens and the 80-200 for events. Two things I’d like to share: 1. As you already know, you have an apsc lens and a full frame lens. For the benefit of others that read this comment, the FF equivalent to your 18-200 f/3.5-5.6 would be a 27-300 f/5-8. So it is definitely more range than the 80-200. But where the 80-200 shines is its constant f2.8, it’s brighter and as you zoom the light doesn’t dim. It’s constant, perfect for events where lighting is tough or high ISOs will ruin a shot. 2. Right now an 80-200 on an apsc camera would crop the image and make the field of view of this lens effectively 120mm-300mm lens which is very telephoto. I could see imperfections in the image. Easier to shoot birds but harder to shoot portraits. Once I put my 80-200 on a FF camera I could see the intended image of this lens. The image it was meant to show. It blew my mind how I could see the bokeh in the viewfinder. The image popped even before I hit the shutter. Thank you for bringing those memories back to me.

This is one lens that I will never sell. I've compared it side by side to the Nikon 70-200 VRII and other than 200mm wide open which is the 80-200's weak point I preferred the older lenses IQ. And yes, my M/AF switch doesn't lock anymore but a little gaffers tape to keep it in the AF position and it's good as new.

I feel the same way! The focus breathing on the VRII is ridiculous compared to this work horse. I also love the way it renders an image, there is just something about it that makes images pop and is very pleasing for portraits. I think I'm keeping it too. Oh and same thing here--gaffers tape--and I'm good to go. Thanks for watching!

Hello, I had this lens for more than 10 years. My M/A switch also had the same problem. What I did and recommend is to put a LensBand instead. I bought a black LensBand that was barely noticeable. It fix the ring in the desired position and protect the ring, which we know is its weak point. It allows you to change both from A to M without having to take anything off and it does not interfere with the focus and focal rings. If I can help you with something, just tell me.

Hello! Yes it will work with the screw drive lenses also known as the af-D lenses via stacking an adapter to the Megadap( go to their website were it has more info than Amazon). That said, the aperture control becomes manual, meaning you need to change the aperture using the ring versus the dial on the camera because there is no communication with the camera and the lens. But it will autofocus not only your screw drive f-mount lenses but also any fully manual lens by stacking an adapter. Hope this was helpful, and thank you for watching!

is the AF-S version the same in terms of optics formula and quality?
@studiotrejo3047
@studiotrejo3047 2 жыл бұрын
Hello, great question! The optical formula is different in the sense that there is more glass in the AF-S version over the AF-D. AFS: has 18 elements in 14 groups, 5 of those elements are ED glass. AFD:16 elements in 11 groups 3 are ED glass. AFS is a heavier lens. Quality is very close between these two but if your shooting test charts you'll notice the AFS is sharper. It doesn't mean the AFD isn't sharp, it is, very. But the AFS improves it enough to notice on test charts but in practical shooting/everyday shooting you won't notice it. There are other bells and whistles the AFS has that may sway you in getting it over the AFD but I wouldn't pick sharpness as one of them. Hope this helps. Cheers!

@studiotrejo3047
@studiotrejo3047 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching! The D300 is an APS-C sensor body and the 70-300 vr was made and optimized for that sensor size. If you decide to get this lens the benefits are a constant aperture. As you zoom in you image will not darken. The down side is that you will only be using the center portion of this lens with your camera. So there are trade offs. I have never had back focus issues with this lens. Out of focus shots, sure. But that can happen with any lens depending on the conditions and camera body AF system. I hope this helps!

Hello! That is a good question. I would say it depends what you are shooting and what you are shooting with. If your mostly shooting portraits--Senior pics, headshots then I would stick to the 85 1.8. If you are shooting events weddings you may want to use a zoom because of it's reach and f/2.8 does well in low light. Another factor is if you are using mirrorless or a Dslr. This lens won't autofocus with the Nikon mirrorless line and the FTZ adapter but your 85mm will. If your using Dslr everything works great with this lens. @@thecontendingforthefaith That is correct. Nikon did not include a meter coupling for the D3xxx nor the D5xxxx. But they did include it for the D7xxxx APSc(except for the D7500) DSLRs. The D600/610/D750/D760 (full frame) all have he coupling. Another advantage of the D7xxxx/D6xx/D7xx is that they also have the screw drive motor inside the camera which means they can autofocus the Nikon AFD lenses. This is something else the D3xxx/D5xxx cannot do. This sounds like bad news but hopefully it helps you decide if you want to upgrade. @@thecontendingforthefaith You can mount all AF, AF-S, AF-P lenses on a Nikon D3400 and have metering. You have to dissociate metering with old manual lenses without CPU contact and autofocus with screw. Of course the D3400 doesn't have a meter coupling, but that's important only if you have to meter with old manual lenses like PRE-AI, AI, AI-S lenses. Otherwise, if you have an AF lens that will autofocus with screw, there is no reason your D3400 won't meter unless you have a defect in the lens contact. All AF, AF-S, AF-P have lens contact but the number of PIN differs (there is less with AF lens that's why you need a body that will autofocus with screw drive like D5, D850, D7500. There is more pins with AF-S and AF-P lenses because they focus internally-electronically and therefore those lenses can autofocus with entry-level DSLR like D40 (only AF-S lenses) D3400 (AF-S, AF-P)

I just grabbed one of these lenses (just placed the order at least); but I have a Nikon D750, so that has the motor in the camera as well for the focusing. I'll have to see how it works when I get it. That being said, I got it from KEH and it's marked as 'UGLY', so we'll have to see how bad it is when it arrives. 🤣(It was dirt cheap, so it's worth the gamble.)

@studiotrejo3047 2 жыл бұрын
Thats fun to hear! Let me know how it works out. Yes this lens should work well with the D750, great camera by the way. KEH has some great inventory and I've heard good things from their customers. If the glass is good and the autofocus is working you I think you'll love the results.

Is it a good lens for sports photography? I think there is nothing better in Nikon quality and price
@studiotrejo3047
@studiotrejo3047 Жыл бұрын
Great question! It depends how far away the action is. Typically sports photography in a stadium would require a longer lens like a 400-600mm. But for smaller venues this lens could work for you. Thanks for watching!

@@lonchafinista4990 Nice camera, I shot with a D600 for many years. If you want to freeze the image as they normally do in sports photography then I would say yes this would be a very good lens. Some sports venues may be at dark and the F2.8 aperture will be very helpful to keep your ISO low. 200mm will get you close to the action.

This video started my desire for this lens, I got to have it some day! But I think I'm going to buy a Z camera, and I don't know how is going to work on that camera! (Probably a Z5)
@studiotrejo3047
@studiotrejo3047 4 ай бұрын
Hello! Thanks for watching! It is a beautiful lens. To use it on a Z camera you can use the FTZ adapter but with no auto focus just aperture control. The Megadap or a FotodioX Pronto would give you auto focus but aperture control is manual. I hope this helps!

I own this lens for a few years now but did'nt use it very often as it is very heavy and for me not usable wide open. At 2.8 its softer than a french softcore porn movie from the seventies. Maybe its just my specimen? Suprisingly enough I started using it more often since I accepted the flaws and use it only at f4 and above. Thats when this lens performs really really well. Anyway, nice review! Thank you!

The awful background "music" totally destroys this video. It could have been an insteresting video but it is impossible to concentrate on the content because the noise is taking all the focus from the narrate.
