Summary (to save myself time when I undoubtedly return to this): 135mm 2.8 - Excellent but expensive 135mm 3.5 - Same 10.5 Fisheye - DX 105mm 2.5 - Sharp 100mm 2.8 E Series - Sharp and compact 20mm 2.8 AF 20mm 3.5 - "Favorite little lens" 50mm 1.8 Pancake 50mm 1.4 - More distortion than the 1.8 50mm 2.0 - Built like a tank 24mm 2.8D AF - "Wonderful, sharp little prime" although not recommended in an earlier video because the 20mm is better. 35mm - Meh, some street shooters like it. 60mm 2.8D Macro - Highly regarded for FX or DX. Swiss army knife of primes. 85mm 1.8D 85mm 1.8G - Superior optics in this focal range 85mm f2 - Very nice, sharp, cheap, silky smooth. Tokina 100mm - excellent, silk, sex, and sugar. Freaking awesome. 180mm 2.8

35mm isn't really exciting to me either for street photography, low end for me is 24mm but usually 50, 55 60mm. The high end 85mm to 120 tops. 35mm just isn't wide enough for groups and blows head shots out of proportion. I like 24mm better for landscape. I can't believe that heavy monster Sigma designed for 35mm weighs as much as a Nikon 24-70mm 2.8...ridiculous!!

Based on few videos i watched, i understood that if we have a Nikon AI or AIS lens mounted via a speedbooster (like Viltrox NF-M43X) to the Panasonic GH5, we will be able to read the aperture change in the viewfinder. Can you confirm this? Thanks for your help!!!

I bought a 50mm AI f/2 on Ebay and can't seem to get it to work with my D300 or D500. I don't know why but the aperture won't work on the camera at all. I'm not sure if you've had any of the same issues. Lens aperture set to f/16

Osto Bisto theyre both the same, the D version just sends some BS data to the camera for flash compensation. the pre-D is the same lens minus the BS flash data

@Whatisright8 жыл бұрын
(3 months later lol) My guess. No plastic or electronics. It's just glass and metal which means there's less to maintain, less to malfunction. Built to last. And the build to last part is key because these lenses are very old. Build aside 135mm is a great focal length. Throw everything out of focus even stopped down sure it's tight, but it's beautiful.

Hi ken i have a question regarding macro. I have a dinkie lol d3400. I do eventually plan on upgrading to a better body eventually but not any time soon as i feel the 3400 fills all of my current needs. My question is what macro lens in the 400 dollar price range should i get? I do some general landscapes and portraits with the 18-55 and 70_300 kit lenses but im very passionate about macro photography. I did insect shots with my cellphone and a clip on lens with all things considered good results for years but i want to upgrade so i can do macro with my actual dslr. Would the tokina f2.8 work out on my body? I shoot in all manual mode and also have no problems with manual focus if that lens won't af on my body. Thank you for all the great content, you are always my go to for camera info.
@brooksysdead6 жыл бұрын
I was also thinking about picking up a set of extension tubes as well but along with those i would really like a dedicated macro lense that i can grow with. Thanks again

+Theoria Apophasis - right now I am just learning about lenses for the future. I just went pro, I just got the d810 and the nikon 50mm 1.4. I do both sports and portrait photography. I know I want the tamron 70-200mm now from watching your videos. I want fast and sharp when it comes to sports photography. For portrait I want crazy creamy bokeh yet super sharp where it matters. I love low aperture. I love SATURATED deep colors. Not airy. I still have my old d90, a sigma 50mm for the d90 with nice bokeh, and for zoom I am using the 18-200mm I had on my d90. I need next another good prime for portrait work. What would you suggest I get next based on the type of photos I want? SATURATED colors and CREAMY bokeh.

Hi - firstly - you're mad, in a good way, we like that in NZ. But yeah, I much prefer it when you do the easy "How to use manual focus lenses on DSLR" - that was brilliant. Chill out man... Questions: 1: Have you reviewed the 70-200 VR f4 Nikkor yet? Can't find it. Question 2: Why do you say in this vid Ken Rockwell got the 85's wrong? I've always had good advice from the old bugger. Bought my 60mm 2.8 Micro on his advice. No mistake there - I'd never part with it, as you agree. But why is he wrong here? I have to mention too, and I'm not sure if this is an export thing - Nikon's 80-200, 2.8D, two ring - mine and many pros I know in NZ and Australia have had their plasticky AF rings snap. Its Achilles heel? Keep rocking you mad bastard, and all the best from New Zealand. Would love your answers.

You talk a lot about not needing fast glass but your background is photography. Would you still hold this point when talking about video? I mean, we can't go under 1/25 s and the ISO only goes so high without noise taking over the image. Besides the color correction that's usually done on what we shoot. I'm just asking because many vintage lens users are videomakers and I haven't seen this being questioned here.

It look s to me, that most of your WIDE ANGLE lens.....have no u.v. filter....THAT S GREAT....as i hate them.........but your tele s have them. Are you thinking that the wide angle lens front element are more scratch proof, then the tele s? I use a LEICA R 3, with the 24m.m. f2.8 ELMAR......with the perfect hood, and 50 m.m. f 2.0 SUMMICRON ( made in CANADA ) and the 90m.m. f 2.8 tele ELMAR...............All with NO U.V. JUNK.......

If you're talking about the DX lens, it's very nice (and cheap).

Nikkor 60mm vs Tokina 100mm?? I mean, sharpness, micro-contrast, etc. forget the focal lenght, just the IQ.

LOVED my 60mm so much I sold my 100MM Tokina. I like the 85mm 1.8G lens for portraits so the Tokina became expendable IMO

David Duong I have not tried the 105 but I did pick up a 3rd party 135 f2.8 which is proving to be nice to shoot with.
