Jason was raised up on a farm with with 30 acres. My grandparents owned it and then passed it down to my dad, then to me. In 1992 l hand built a big log cabin. Then in 2009 my wife and I were sitting on the porch and every direction we looked they were a new house there or one being built. After living there for 40 years l told my wife I'm not living in this city. We sold the house and stayed in one of our rentals for several years until we found another place much farther out in the country. Our closest neighbors are a half a mile away. Now I'm back in the country again..

The government "owns" too much of the land - especially out west - and worse, manages it very poorly. I would like to see a second homestead act that would put land into the hands of Americans under the auspices of making it productive for America and implemented the right way would improve land management dramatically. I don't believe peace is dependent on how crowded the planet is. It's much more about how connected we are to Our Creator. And nature helps us stay connected to Him. God bless those who have lost their way And God bless you for the amazing work you do that glorifies Him.

In the US, the actual citizens of this country are DECREASING. The problem isn’t overpopulation, it’s cities overubanization and urban decay. We need to fix up old places, not leave them to fall apart. We also need to stop allowing foreigner to buy real estate and mineral/ forestry/water rights of US land. Sadly, the increased traffic you’re experiencing is people just like you…either looking for homes away from urban centers, or working for developers.

I totally understand how you feel about people and noise. I live in GA as well, in a small mill town east of ATL with a state route going through the center of town. When I moved here in 1996, we could sit on the front porches of the houses on the main road and talk. Virtually no noise and it was so peaceful. Now, you can't hear what the other person is saying because of the road noise. It's like living next to an interstate. I live one road behind the main road and it drives me crazy that while working in my yard, I can't escape the noise. I even talked to DOT engineers to see if there was some kind of asphalt that could be used that would reduce the tire noise - the answer was a big negative. There are ways I can abate it - evergreen plantings, fences, ponds with moving water - and I'm doing all of them, but it's still always there. I often wish I had gone out to the country instead of moving here. But, I love my home and the way it feels to live inside of it - like a warm comforting hug. Have to pick your battles and as I age, I just don't spend as much time outdoors...

I live about 2 miles (as the crow flies), from where I grew up. My parents' still live in that house. At the Fall Gathering, I realized that the area there reminds me of what it used to look like here where I live. I have watched the farmland here go fallow, get gobbled up, and houses spring up where there was nothing but cows. The road is 3 to 4 lanes (with more widening soon to happen), and the car noise never stops. And while I love the convenience, it hurts to remember how this use to all be 2 lane roads, where most everyone knew each other and we all went to the same school about 7 miles away. Now, I am lucky to run into anyone I know. It just hurts, The worst part is being priced out of my "hometown". There's no way I can afford to buy 10+ acres here, even if I could find it. Because the developers will pay about $100K an acre. Is everyone here wealthier overall than 30 years ago? Proabably. Is it convenient? Yes. Do I still hate it? Yes. Progress and privacy (or maybe just nostalgia) are two sides of the same coin, and someone has to flip it every couple of decades.

Sadly, we are not inherently good stewards of our land. We are given such abundance yet we squander it for parking lots and shopping malls. Where are the community gardens? There are plenty of food pantries- yet no gardens? Seems counter productive to me.

I would say I'm not a people person but I can get along with just about anyone, I just don't really like being around people. I'm content with being around my family and staying to myself. Life feels like it is getting over crowded but only because of the inherent nature of some people just being shitty, entitled people. The largest problem today is the government forcing itself into every aspect of life for the sake of progress, but all it has done is exponentially harmed society. Some people have far too much free time on there hands to be productive so they just try to tear down. The fed has gotten way to big for anything other than destruction. There is a book one can read to learn the outcome of it all. .

Like you, we moved from a small South Georgia town because I deemed it "too peopley". We have been on our place for almost 10 years and there are twice as many homes around us since we have moved here. Worse yet about 40 miles east of us an automotive mfg. is building (progress!) With it comes all the support industry and bedroom communities, of which we may become one! I'm not happy about it but can't do anything about it. So, I'll stand m ground as long as I can. I'm old enough now that I can probably live the rest of my life in limited privacy. But I can relate to your dilemma.

At times, I see this homestead journey as an apprenticeship with the Creator. Daily, He reveals to me the consequences of complacent consumerism. I truly believe you’re tapping into the core message of the Eden account: Are we replenishing what we and our children consume? Very few homesteaders or preppers truly confront the concept of land’s carrying capacity. How many people can the land sustain, and for how long, while maintaining its restorative balance? I believe that in the age to come, we will design homes, neighborhoods, and cities with permaculture zone planning, ensuring that when we cut down a tree, we already have a zone planted to replenish it. This thoughtful approach will align with the Creator’s design, fostering a sustainable and restorative relationship with the land.

I live in a quiet area, I drive under the speed limit too but not many people mind. I have to be to work between 8 and 9 so I can go slower if I want to! No one in the neighborhood complains about the yard, the mess, the noise, the fireworks, anything although technically it is a HOA. I moved back to my childhood home after 25 years and wow has the next town grown though. Yikes! And the trees in the yard, my parents should have cut more down! They were too close to the house and plumbing and shouldn't have been allowed to get so big and expensive to remove. I like staying home, it's so peopley out there.

It is not a system that allows balance. Once it takes root in a sparsely settled heavily forested area it becomes a magnet for transplants leaving over-developed areas that they could not wait to get away from but will recreate around themselves in just a few years. Always opportunistic real estate developers will the see the trend developing in its early stage and make all the right contacts to be able to cash in big. Modernity spreads like a cancer or a virus, leaving different cosmetic versions of the same lifestyle as it grows. Consider what happened to native Hawaiians, many of whom can no longer afford to live in their own land. And, of course, many of the North American Indians who were pushed on to reservations and their former hunting grounds turned into housing developments, shopping malls, and modern infrastructure. This pattern repeated in Australia, in the rest of the Americas, and now elsewhere. It's a total package that is marketed thru all of the media, financed by the banking system and though it is terribly toxic it is showing no signs of slowing down or adopting greener, wiser, and less materialistic values. There are some signs of some systemic breakdown ahead, and some people are trying to live a more balanced & modest lifestyle, but even here The System makes it difficult to people to live tiny. You are compelled to build a large, energy & resource hogging home with all of hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of all the standard amenities & subsystems. Most likely, this style of modern living will only change significantly when the Debt Bubble finally bursts, when Climate Change takes out whole sections of built infrastructure, and the cost to live this way becomes unaffordable for many. Maybe with enough collective suffering we will finally rediscover community neighborliness, frugality, work/life balance, and the spiritual necessity of living within a healthy natural ecosystem...

Normally, I agree with just about everything you say, Jason, but not on the driving less than the speed limit. Did you ever think that because you are not driving the speed limit, you may be making someone else late? Or maybe someone got a call that a loved one is in the hospital or worse yet, on their death bed, and you are keeping them from getting to their loved one in time to say goodbye? I would so be that person behind you who was throwing up her hands in frustration!! I would never ask or expect you to break the law by driving over the speed limit, but it irritates me to no end when I get behind someone like you who has no particular place to go, when I, on the other hand, have to be at work, or physical therapy, or the doctor, or whatever! I plan my time carefully so that I'm on time to my appointments... what I cannot plan for... is being behind someone like you who refuses to go the speed limit, and then you wonder why someone would have the gaul to get upset at you!! Please try to consider that the person behind you might actually have a good reason to need you not to hinder them. Do unto others..., brother.

Progress isn't always good, as we see these days. Populations will taper off in another 15 years, as all of us boomers will be dying off, and our kids only had a couple kids if that, so I think it's leveling off in some respect (not with immigration though). But one tip I'd give to anyone with the means who wants "their space" and solitude, is to buy up all the land around "your" area so it's all your own, (and don't split it up or sell it to anyone). This way, you buy out your neighbor's view of you.

I mean I think all the vocal whiners about (insert topic) should go see how its produced for their convenience. For example, anyone who whines about harvesting animals they should go visit the massive chicken factories and see how bad those live before being culled and all the crap they're pumped full of to make them grow for production results, so the next time they get some drive through chicken nuggies they're yanked out of their willful ignorance utopia. If the people who complain actually were forced to see what goes into making their modern lifes conveniences they'd have to choose hypocrisy or shutting up....or they'd become instant homestead advocates.
