I found your channel a while back when you were building the outdoor kitchen on the old property. I'm so glad you are talking now and explaining what you are doing and plan to do. I was appalled at what you had to go through and so sorry you had to move. However, I'm loving your plans for the new property and cabin and can't wait to see the garden get under way! Just thought you may want to know there are some of us out there appreciating what you go through to keep your channel going!

Great content. I learn something new from your videos. Your content is fantastic. They are also relaxing. I noticed Cali hugging the ground as she laid there and then got up and began panting. She just doesn't seem herself. I think something's wrong with her. I hope you bring her to a vet and have a full examination. She is overheating much too quickly. The overheating affects the brain very quickly. All the best to you, Cali, and your family. This by far is one of the best channels on KZbin! He seen me and immediately called the ambulance they came and checker me out asked questions and I was running a 104.5 fever .they said I had heat stoke and wanted me to go to the hospital. I being a man refused so I had to sign a waver saying I refused.they said you need to go get in a cool shower and drink as much water as I can first.did both and felt alot better within a couple hrs. That was a very scary time because I had no idea what was wrong with me. Thought I was going to die the shaking got so out of control. Good job. Coppicing your trees allows new growth from the stumps, and existing trees release seeds that turn in to small saplings which can be moved everywhere. You may want to think of planting hundreds of wildflowers, which will attract good insects which will attract birds. Birds will help keep the insect population down. A bat haven might be an idea to help with the mosquitos. A solar light on a tall pole or high in a tree may attract Nighthawks, they love moths and insects. Putting ladybugs out en masse is beneficial. And of course sowing money plants such as ginseng and yellowroot throughout the forest is a future investment. Good luck with this experiment. I like the idea of forest gardening, planting crops throughout the forest that come up yearly with no intervention such as garlic, onions, wild ramps etc. A no work larder.

I was surprised when I learned that Lucille Ball started raising night crawlers in her old age for her gardens, so with your leaf mulch, night crawlers, and wood ashes to reduce acidity, you are all set, for great soil! I used to study cordwood house building, which doesn’t require super strength, and since you will be cutting out some smaller trees, maybe you could use them for some smaller cordwood buildings for Embden geese and goslings, or goats or a cow, or whatever you decide to have for extra protein, cheese, feather beds, eggs, etc. One cordwood builder said that the small trees cut at about two inches or so in diameter were the best, as they dry faster, and there’s less shrinkage. I hope you get some Haralson apple trees planted, as you won’t be disappointed, and they do well in Minnesota even. Your kids and grandkids will thank you, should the Lord tarry. Smart ideas there.

I just googled. Earthworms are not native to Canada. Who knew?!?! They arrived with early immigrants from Europe. And, they are causing problems for maple trees, beech and ferns. Apparently, earthworms consume the organic matter in forest litter which results in soils that can't hold as much moisture. That interferes with seed germination and the ability of some species’ plantlets to survive.

And I didn't know they were NOT native to Canada, very interesting they were brought in by immigrants from Europe, who probably thought they were good for the garden.

I've read of worms invading from being used as bait. They get washed down waterways after people dump them or drop them fishing, most worms can't drown in the way we think of drowning and would actually take several days to a week to drown. (despite what people tell you about why they come to the surface when it rains which is to migrate not because they are scared of drowning). So the worms may well have arrived on your land down the waterways and not have been bought in.

At the same time being able to learn that finding earthworms in a specific area means that man touched it, and how that effects the rest of the flora and fauna. Long story short, there's no shortage of knowledge and information on your channel. Thank you for being you!

Brilliant talk Shawn. I always learn something from you each video you post. You are doing us all a great service with your abundant knowledge, the planet as well. We watch you from all over the world, and although different areas have different Ecco systems much of the knowledge is transferable. I thank you and the earth would thank you also if it could. You are a real gem.

Wow, great video, I read that quite some time ago, about the night crawlers, if you buy them for fishing and don't use them all, you're supposed to toss them in the trash. It's too bad they were introduced in the first place. Your forest management ideas are very sound. Smart and introspective ideas.

Something I have done in my area of my forest is to just throw seeds around like mints basil, wheat and wild lettuce you might want to try it that area you are videoing in, you don't have to plant any of them just throw the seeds around what comes up will be good for you and the wild life. In Joy

Got an idea for you. Over the years the University of Minnesota has developed grapes, apricots, apples, pears, and potatoes for our climate. Odds are that your Universitys have done the same. We have winerys that have some fabulous products. Grape juice cans up beautifully to enjoy all year round. And I use wine in cooking also. Glad that the fire danger has been reduced. Blessings on all!

Back in the day tromping about the mountains in Banff (late 70s) with the pack in pack out zero impact philosophy you just encompassed the working in harmony with nature that is IMHO the Gold Standard of today. There is always an impact where ever we do something. Its how that impact is managed. Well done, and keep teaching. Cheers, from NB

LOTS of thinking needed to assimilate well into a property...I thank you 4 sharing your journey with us. We can all learn from your experience. It is RARE indeed to have a human 'think' of others in respecting their footprint upon the land. WELL DONE! Your consideration/appreciation of the land you are privileged to enjoy will come back upon you as a blessing. Weather is no longer 'normal'. God Bless you n' yours.

God bless you Mr. JAMES. Your channel is inspiring to me, which is an exceptional thing as I work every day to overcome a back/leg injury, most of my time confined to a chair. So ,watching your channel gets my juices flowing, and inspires me. I spent most of my youth in the woods, but never had the knowledge to do what you do,( it was more of a simple bushcraft thing,) which is so satisfying and gives me a feeling of freedom. I went to school in Syracuse for Paper science engineering which had courses in forest management in the curriculum. I love your dog. I used to have a retriever similar to yours. She was a dear friend. God bless you sir.

Select cuts are what we used to do as a logging business. Allows more saplings to grow, and we've seen mapping done from sky showing oxygen levels and increase within short time after out process. Also limbing is nice as well because it create canopies which keeps areas cooler and promotes small plants and food for wildlife.

You've developed what sounds like a well rounded, well thought out plan for building your home, for the environment, for food production, and for forest management. Every plan is subject to small tweaks or changes somewhere.

Well plans are always just ruff drafts anyway when you run into a shortage or bump in the road so to speak, you compensate, change detection. Plus if you hadn’t told us you could have said that was the plan from the start. When I see you trying to build up growing soil, makes me wish I could send you some of my north Iowa’s rich black top soil to add to your gardening area’s.

Years back, while doing a report in high school, I was surprised to learn that nightcrawlers are not native to North America. I kinda just figured worms existed everywhere and that's just how it was. I never knew they were invasive.

I'm going to research that because I also assumed worms were everywhere. I know that the fly wasn't native to Hawaii. They were "blessed" with that pest when other people traveled there by boat. I learn interesting things watching your videos. Thank you.

Like Shawn, I absolutely love living in the woods! The best thing I ever did was buy acreage - back when I was back in school and had no real business buying anything. But I got restricted land cheap, right before the first Gulf war over Kuwait began. Today, I couldn't afford to buy it - as land prices eventually skyrocketed. We don't really vacation, because I so love where I live that, when we're away, we can't wait to get back. And when the world seems to be going to hell in a handbasket, I can just shut off the gloom and doom and breath in the beauty and tranquility of our little slice of heaven. I can't fathom living in the city again. So blessed!
