Angry Reps Resist President Tinubu, Reject CFR Award To Speaker - Watch The Dramatic Debate

The House of Representatives has rejected the planned conferment of the Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR) on its Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas.
During Wednesday's plenary session, lawmakers expressed their dissatisfaction with President Tinubu's decision to award Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Chief Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON) while designating the lower CFR honour for Abbas.
This opposition was prompted by a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by Benue lawmaker Hon. Philip Agbese.
In his Independence Day address, Tinubu announced that Akpabio and Kekere-Ekun would receive the GCON, while Abbas and Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin would receive the CFR.
Additionally, Deputy Speaker of the House, Hon. Ben Kalu, was slated to be awarded the Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON). The president did not specify a date for the conferment

First for all for the members to deliberate on the award given to the Speaker of the house was not an issue that concerns the ordinary citizen of Nigeria. Award given in recognition of any Nigerian by the president is discretional and not compulsory. The public do not care of whether the Senate and of Representatives are equal so long as they do their job as called for by the constitution of the country. There is a reason why the Senate president as designated in a federal system is the number three person in the country and the Speaker is the number four. There is no way that some who is number three position will be the same as someone in number four position. The functions are not exactly the same and so also may be any award the president deemed necessary accord the individual in the position. It makes no sense for members to worry about what type of award was given to the leader. The award was not to the house of representatives but for his hard work. Members should work hard so that they can individually be recognized by the speaker to get an award. It is the speaker of the house that is the link to the president and not every member. He is the only one who can reject the award given to him and not the entire house. The House of Representative should not start a fight between the leadership of the Senate and the House of representative. The constitution has a clear distinction between these two position and members of the house know. Do not be a laughing stock to the rest of the world over an award.
