He knew precisely the market value of the books and did all of the homework. Don't lose sleep, 750 was above market / probably right on the money. He didn't cancel the sale because he was mad about the broken book - he's the one who bagged and boarded it... he already knew about the damage. He cancelled the sale because he's holding out for more money. Non-comic people see $.10/$.12 covers and their eyes go green and they think they've found a Picasso.

Not an AF15. If you read the red box on the splash page it says “exactly as it appeared in Amazing Fantasy #15”. Lesson learned though, let the seller opened the bag up, beware of low grade, brittle comics… as they do flake off so quickly. Admittedly though for the Iron Man #1 it already had that huge chunk of the cover corner just placed in the bag just sitting there. Another word of warning. Don’t open up comics when there is a drink standing next to them. It’s a stupid move.

Ive seen idiots in my past comic stores open a book and not pull down and fold over the tape and get the tape stuck on the cover, only to rip the surface off the cover in the area the tape stuck too. Hey Chris, how are you? It’s Lee from Elizabeth with a new name for my KZbin handle. I want to say that the feeling I have is that this seller knew that that book was in such bad condition, as well as the others. And that is why he did not want them taken out of the bag. He also said make sure you know what you were getting. It makes me believe that he knew very well what would happen and was trying to unload the books on someone who otherwise would not have looked the way you did. You did exactly what any smart, buyer should do, you looked at the items before you bought them. Smart on your part, bad on his part.

Anything over $20... I would insist on looking through the book. Make the seller be the one to take it out of the bag. I look through it with the seller watching. Once encountered an owner of a LCS who got offended that I wanted to check on a $100 book. He claimed that he already checked the book and it is fine. I said I wanted to double check. That is where he got offended and kicked me out of his store. From then on... any seller who object to me looking through a book I'm interested in... I walk away. Though I understand the inconvenience it is for the seller to have to open up the book. From my standpoint... I'm protecting myself because there are usually no returns on comics once I take them home and then later discover pages missing, clipped coupons, etc. I'm stuck with it.

If he went down to $800 not sure why he would not do $750 but the box for sure was worth well over $1,000 well over closer to $2k imo.Now to resellers the box is only worth the least amount they could get it for.I would have just gave the $800 took the books and been done with it with you saying that you really wanted them and you even said yourself $1250 so you know the $800 was a deal maybe not a good/great deal but a deal all the same.I used to be a low budget collector so I know a lot about low grade comics and how pieces do tend to fall out when you take them out of the bags.And yes that piece was detached or almost detached you can tell it was not a recent rip and ofc the guy is going to try and rip you off if you will.Box was still worth $800 though at any rate my bet is he will sell them to you next time you see him.Do you deal in vintage toys by chance?

The paper is all aged, dried out and will just disintegrate as you flip through the pages. They are just to stay in a bag -as is- forever. Also you would have to sell all the good ones just to make back your $750 and you will just have trash left over.

Always ask to have the other person pull it out of the bag prior to making a deal. Brittle comics are nobody's fault except whoever kept them in that shitty condition. But if the seller had the wrong size sleeve, it causes issues too. If you bought the stuff than the deal is done. Just don't buy from him again. It will be a rocky relationship after he acted that way, especially if he knew the comics were brittle to begin with.

Don't take it out of the plastic because the books going to fall apart sounds exactly what the guy was thinking. Incredible that he values those books at over a grand yet hasnt invested in a few bags and boards for the top half. Got to disagree on the point about bagging skills. Whoever did that got Iron Man #1 into an over tight bag and folded those pages just right so the book wasn't going to move and looked half way decent.

that corner was 29:06 obviously detached before it came out of the bag, being held in place only by the creased pages. Also, with that big missing piece of the upper right hand corner, it didn't start off as very valuable

After making the deal, I would have went ahead and bought the books for the seven fifty. You agreed to the deal without taking them out of the bags, so I think that put it on you. But I would have bought them anyway. I think there was 3 or 4 books in there. That you could have got your money back on. I'll tell you.I bought a fantastic four number 1, one time. It was in worse condition than any of those. it had tape on the cover. Somebody tried to color it. I mean, it was the worst looking copy of a comic book I've ever seen. It actually looked like it had been laying in the street, and was rained on, and then run over by multiple vehicles . I sent it into CGC. they said it was the lowest grade they had never given on that book. So I put it on ebay and auctioned it off, and I gave explicit details of the condition even though c g c had already graded it, and stated its actual condition. It ended up selling for $750. I was blown away I didn't think anybody would buy it. Quite a few people placed bids on it. I got good feedback on it and everybody was happy. The key was just putting it out there and being truthful. You'd be surprised at what somebody would buy Just to1 own something that they couldn't afford otherwise. I really enjoyed the book while I had it, but I was glad to sell it.And the person who got it was glad to own it.

I am very particular of who I purchase comic books from. Anyone who starts out with unusual demands should be avoided. You can't take the comics out of the bag, screams "problem comics" I will walk out of a shop or away from a booth if someone has to look up prices on the Internet. You should already have a book priced or at least have an idea of value in your head. I will also walk away from a sale if someone has books marked to high. I already know a rough estimate of most books and I know what I am willing to pay for a book. Not saying I have not overpaid for a book, but I know when I do and I am OK with that. If someone does not seem like they know what they are doing I will walk away. Someone who asks mint price for something that is obviously not mint. Never be afraid to walk away from a deal that seems like you are getting scammed. The only thing you should have done different is walk away as soon as he said "You can't take the comics out of the bag"

In slowmo you can see that edge separating as you pull the comic out. So either 1) it was already broken off in the bag, or 2) it went in just barely hanging on but that bag is way too small and tight, and the pressure of pulling it out was the last straw and made it separate fully. Either way, it's not your fault. If it was #2, then whoever put that book in there really fucked it up because you need to handle brittle and damaged comics like that very carefully and put them in a bag that's specious enough... certainly not a modern comic bag which will absolutely be way too tight and WILL cause damage as you put the book in and take it out. I've made the mistake myself of putting books in bags that are too tight. To take them out I just ended up cutting the bag rather than putting the force necessary on the books to remove them.

But if i had someone pull a comic out of the bag and pieces came off. Well that would be on me. Unless the possible buyer mis handled the book some way. Like just ripping the old book out of the bag. Those older books need to be handled delicately and easy. If someone is doing that and a piece came off. I'd be like sorry it's a bittle book. And try and work with the buyer if they still wanted the book or books. But I'd never want to blame rhe buyer. I know the condition of my books. And that could be a possibility of happening. :) seems to me that seller knew there was some issues with the books. And that's why he acted that way. I just recently sold a comic brother. A daredevil #1 2.0 range. And he asked me specifically can he take the book out to read. And I told him. I took it out to check the book for condition and to make sure it was complete. And I had no issue taking it out of the bag. But I did tell him to handle book with care...hahaha he received the book and flipped thru it very happy. He should of been honest and told you the books are in rough shape. Key books are still valuable in any condtion. Just my humble opinion.

Bummer! Great issues but in horrible shape. Seller tried to pass them as decent but you made the right decision, stay away. Btw you’re absolutely correct, you have to inspect the books before putting up the money.
@CGL_Collectibles3 ай бұрын
I think inspection is a must. I didn’t even open the book to check for missing pages or cut outs. This was a very frustrating experience.
@Joeboyscomics3 ай бұрын
No doubt you dodged a bullet here!! There’s not a single thing wrong about how you went about this. If your dropping $750 you have every right to inspect the books.

You have a Stevie Ray Vaughan poster... an amazing musician you're probably not a bad guy... we live in a very different crazy world --I'm thinking that all these wacko zoids are crawling under rocks on a regular basis..Laxvespa-LosAngeles ... long time media seller on various different platforms mostly unusual strange stuff, sometimes even rare... but comic books were really never my thing... I actually carefully wrap and store all of my media items so they're not going to get trashed before they actually get bought, I take meticulous care in packing them so you could throw them like a frisbee... even the glass & fragile items are double boxed for my other inventory.. they probably weren't using acid free archival products.. they do make foam core that is acid free & archival.. but rather some cheap cardboard backing... was probably used with no attention to detail... when you get plastic things involved there's all kinds of bad condensation & yucky things that happen..

LOL at 12:43 a thought a Coverless AF 15 showed up I was like holy crap, but then noticed the spine think that is a Marvel Tales #1 coverless. That stuff looked ultra brittle, it would all fall apart on you. You probably made out by not buying them.

Big fan of yours! Thank you for taking the time to leave your comment! I did a double take on that book because for a split second I also thought it was an AF 15.

4:57 "it was too tight to get them into the bags": Sounds like angryseller put the comics into bags that were too small. (silver age comics into current-size bags?)

Very possible!

He didn't sound angry/upset to me. He even said 'sorry' - so he understands. That piece clearly fell off and those folds would take decades to look like that. I think his initial reaction was to blame you, but eh. Seems like he's used to arguing with people.

You’re probably right about that. That’s why I don’t want “bad blood,” but at the same time I want to share the experience and my feelings towards it. I’m actively trying to ruin this man’s credibility lol!

I used to collect as a kid in the 80's and early 90's. I never even heard of "Not Brand Echhs". Is that like the predecessor to What The!?

Looked already cut to me. Just kind of sitting there looking like a crease. Was that an Amazing fantasy 15? Can't remember what the splash page looks like, but things in that artwork looked early 60s.

The seller made a big mistake taking "high dollar books:" to a swap meet. No one has that kind of money. Time and again books get left out overnight and dew/moisture get in the plastic. The seller doesn't realize or care he damaged his own items. I've seen musical instruments left in the hot sun and rain. I've taken a seller's word before and came home with water damaged/stained books.
@CGL_Collectibles2 ай бұрын
This is a “higher end” flea market, so you do get shoppers with deep pockets. But if you’re going to sell high dollar items you should act like a high value dealer.
@GeeSly73 ай бұрын
Hey! When someone tells me not to take the books out of the bag. I'd just walk away even if they're great titles. The books were destroyed anyways. The dealer has no idea what he's doing. He's in the wrong not you my friend!

Hi welcome back it’s been a while since I seen a viddy from you. Um I would say the guy at the flea market wasn’t to transparent with the condition of the comics obviously the seller had to of known the condition of the iron man and other comics I am sure they put it in the bag and board. It looked as of the corner was already cut and the bag was just holding it in place so it would present better than it actually was. It wasn’t your fault it fell off you were just doing your due diligence like anyone would before they drop 750 on some comics. I even suspected the seller knew because he even was dropping the price down quick from his initial price. It is what it is you know. I wouldn’t have tried to make a deal on the whole box but would have tried to haggle with one or two of them if I wanted to add them to the collection. The hardest part I think of comic collecting is knowing when to just walk away from comics when you been looking for a certain comic it’s tuff to walk away from even a poor condition iron man 1 without trying to counter offer a price for just one comic if you been chasing that comic you know what I mean. After all that I might of still offered them a lowball offer for it if it had all its pages. We’re just talking about iron man 1 but at that point it’s still worth to look at the others that you might be interested in. It’s like half of comic collecting is the journey it takes you on finding each comic you been hunting down and the little victories you get when you find that certain comic or awesome deals. Good viddy bud it makes me think of what I would have done in that situation. Like you said it prob would have been better if the seller took it out the bag but I do believe seller knew ahead of time it was like that.

Welcome back! I love this comment, but I can tell you right now, I probably would not have been able to pick books out of this box. It was an all or nothing deal without paying ridiculous prices.
