The Great Old One Warlocks are actually very powerful, if a bit finicky. All their extended spells are either divination spells or control spells. It's one of the few classes/subclasses that get a resistance, and it's the uncommon psychic resistance. It's also one of two classs/subclasses that gets telepathy natively.
@ashtonhoward5582 Жыл бұрын
Psychic resistance isn't very applicable though. I'm not going to get into other classes, so staying within warlock you have the Undead with resistance to necrotic damage, the Fiend with a choice of what to be resistant to, the Genie with one of four resistances, the Fathomless with cold, and the Celestial with radiant. And Hexblade gets to make their cursed target miss 50% of what would normally be hits, which isn't quite as good as resistance but is far more applicable than resistance to one damage type. I will give you telepathy, though. It certainly can be good if the DM actually makes it worth anything. Though being able to communicate regardless of what language they can speak is pretty big regardless. Overall, I wouldn't call them powerful compared to the rest of the warlock subclasses. Though I would say the same for every warlock subclass (good job, WoTC), if it weren't for Hexblade existing. It's just too good for raw damage, and invocations cover most of your noncombat stuff as it is.

@RaethFennec Жыл бұрын
Ehhh. I rolled one as my first D&D character before I understood much and thank goodness my DM let me change up a few stats and choices later so I could swap to Fiend. GOW really is not that great, especially once you learn that the "telepathy" is only one-way. RAI, they can't speak back. It's a nice feature if your DM allows it, though, especially if you don't have access to species that have better telepathy features. Like Kalash-tar or Thri-kreen. Extended spell list is very meh. A resistance is great, but it's not until level 10 so your campaign is probably almost over and unless you're specifically fighting mindflayers or something with lots of psychic damage it's very likely to never come up. Entropic Ward is only once per short rest, and Create Thrall is VERY DM-dependent since it only charms the affected target, giving you some advantage on Charisma checks and not letting them attack you, but doesn't compel them to do anything. I see Great Old One Warlocks as similar to something like Horizon Walker ranger.

Lyomar had inadvertently agreed to have It as his patron and become a Warlock... and gone completely and utterly insane from the meeting.
