Eventually its revealed that there's a 3rd lich brother with an army of undead who is effectively the campaign's bbeg, forcing the party and their rivals to team up, but eventually lose, with both their employer's phylacterys being destroyed. The party is then hired by a 4th lich, who wants them to fix her phylactery. It turns out that the bbeg is also having the same issues with his phylactery, putting the 2 in a race to acquire the resources needed to repair them. Chances are, you don't remember exactly what they said word for word. You might recall the general intent of what they said, but unless it was something really profound or impactful, the specifics are probably lost and there's things you've probably glossed over. I had an idea to play a Fey Bard with the criminal background, the idea was that this Fey used Fey magic to create binding contracts with people, and since Fey cannot lie, everything in the contract (at least on the Fey's end) would be true to the letter. Since my character cannot willingly tell a lie, when seeing this, I just had the thought that Gift of Gab could be used in so many ways by my potential character to stay within the bounds of telling the truth but also be able to hide information away from people. For example: I'm talking to a guard and they go "state your business" and I go "I have an invitation from the lord, I'm to meet him here to discuss some things." and he goes "Is that everything?" and I go "Yes, that is my business (but it is not everything) [May I go in now?]" - By replacing the Parenthesis with the Brackets I can effectively hide information while still telling the truth, as long as I'm clever in how I use it.

That's an amazing idea, but why stop at suggestion? Geas lasts significantly longer; then there's the domination spells which allow full control. Zone of truth could allow you to sneakily interrogate more questionable characters without them knowing it. Antipathy & Sympathy would just be for the laughs though, subtly cursing someone in town to cause pandemonium.
@ThatsMrSomeGuyToYou3 жыл бұрын
@@XperimentorEES The cool thing with the Suggestion idea is that you can completely gaslight the victim. They could know you used Suggestion on them, but they could think you suggested them to for example "Do the right thing.". So when they shortly after kill the king, they may in fact blame themselves and not you. Using it with Geas could work in a similar way with a bit of luck, but would otherwise just be meaningless gaslighting for the sake of torturing or killing someone who can't figure out how to follow the command. Zone of Truth tells you that affected creatures are aware of the spell. So that wouldn't help. Antipathy/Sympathy already has a range of 60ft. So yeah, no use other than for example gaslighting someone into thinking that you did it by just verbally cursing them.
@XperimentorEES3 жыл бұрын
@@ThatsMrSomeGuyToYou I wasn't intending on any of them being tortuous, if anything I was trying to give more ideas for social and political role playing options instead of encouraging murderhobos. Geas offers more complex commands than suggestion, while letting them have free will unlike the domination spells; such as duping a sheriff into arresting every other visiting trader that comes into town for suspicion of being spies, while your group runs a black market monopoly scheme. But depending on the ruling of how gift of gab works, they'd either forget or get distracted from the revealing effect of zone of truth, granted more dm dependent but it might be an option if discussed prior to the investment. What story important character wouldn't have eyes ears or divination of suspicious activity outside of 30 feet? Even then it'd have other utilities such as; blockading guards with innocent bystanders while looking like mass hysteria, or make a beloved mayor seem evil for an easy overthrow, without relying on spamming mass suggestion nor worrying about any elves ignoring charms.

I imagine it as the words in that span of 6 seconds becomes lost from memory and the latter words end up being believed what filled that void of time in conversation. Remember, it's not just a "make your target think you said something different" spell, it's a "make anyone you want nearby plus everyone further than five feet away hear something different than what your target did". You can use it to secretly shout useful information to your party without the person you're talking to knowing. You could use it to provoke a fight while the guards think you're an innocent victim. You could shout an accusation at someone that they hear as an innocuous question, leading everyone else to thinking they admitting their guilt. You get the drift. The main benefit of the spell doesn't seem to be saying something and taking it back, but effectively being able to say two different things at once with the ability to choose which audience hears which things.

Except you have to say the sentence you're replacing what your originally said with out loud as the verbal component of the spell. So you say "You're the killer, aren't you? (By the way, do you like beer?)" Your target hears "By the way, do you like beer?" And answers yes. Everyone else hears "You're the killer, aren't you? By the way do you like beer?" and their response is rendered meaningless because they heard both questions and can assume they wouldn't casually respond yes to the accusation of murder. Rather than your target hearing one thing and everyone else hearing another, your target hears an abridged version while everyone else hears the full statement.

I think the words replaced by the spell just get erased from the target's memory, along with, maybe, the time in which they were said. Then the brain just cobbles together a plausible story for the missing time. Our brains do stuff like that constantly. It's honestly scary how much time we lose without ever noticing.
@Bluecho43 ай бұрын
Absolutely. Our brains are constantly dumping massive quantities of information every second of every day (admittedly, mostly useless stuff like perceiving the same inanimate object that's been in a spot for 8 months, hence why it's easy to overlook something in familiar surroundings). The brain is finite, and the stimuli being thrown at us infinite. It has to be choosy about what it processes, and what it lets fall by the wayside. It's also constantly altering things in subtle ways. Like removing a microsecond from our visual perception every time our eyes move, so we're not constantly screwed over by motion blur. Replacing that microsecond with an extension of the microsecond immediately after we switch focus, to make the transition seamless. (Hence why the movement of a clock hand seems to linger longer than it should when we first glance at the clock). Or how the brain fills in the blindspot in our vision, from the presence of the nerve connecting to the back of the eye (there are no cells able to gather info from there, so the brain cheats). Or how our eyes feed us vision that's "upside down" (because of how light works), and the brain has to go in and flip it "rightside up" so we can process things "correctly". Honestly, a lot of this is specific to the eyes, because vision is deeply jank. It's an evolutionary miracle we can see at all. Half of that is because our brains compensate for the mechanical limitations.

@@imUmoron Meh, takes a 5th level spell slot (granted, it can be used at the end of the day), you need to be at least 9th level to have this slot, and the target needs to fail both a wis save AND a con save to get exhaustion. If the target succeds both, they lose a point of exhaustion. On the other hand, the stupid pact of the tome/message combo is possible starting from level 5, with a build that a pact of the tome warlock might actually go for, even without this intention (so you don't need to severely hinder your character to pull off this ridiculous combo), and only needs for the target to fail an increasingly more difficult CON save every night if the DM allows it. Though, you could actually do both : harrass them for most of the night, then send a nightmare when you're close to the end. That way, you decrease the chance of a successful long rest (the DM would probably allow a test for the target of messages to be able to benefit from the effects of a long rest), with all the effects that stem from multiple nights in a row without a long rest. Plus, being a warlock, you probably have a 5th level spell slot to spare at the end of the day (at the cost of a learned and a memorized spell, but that's worth it). This is my favourite kind of magic countering. One cover-all counterspell is so boring. Examples where spells have a very specific counter, like Magic Missile and Shield, are much more fun to me. So this idea that a very niche spell is countered by a single feat sounds really cool. One of the things I loved about playing "Sorcery! 3" was that casting certain spells would cancel out the effects of certain other spells. Pairs of opposite spells that on the surface don't have related effects, but the casting process for each has this special pairing.

The issue with this spell is people tend to not allow or have heard of Acq inc so they think its a homebrew spell.
@illyon10923 жыл бұрын
to be fair, it is written like poor homebrew; like many AcqInc spells are. Verbal components are no words with meaning, literally reshaping memory of each nearby creature of your choice without a saving throw is far beyond a 2nd-level spell, and the practical holes Skenk pointed out are another major design flaw.
@Bluecho43 жыл бұрын
@@illyon1092 I disagree. While it makes an exception to normal component rules, it's not like the official rules out of the PHB or other books don't have weird uses of components. Moreover, while the spell is powerful in its ability to disrupt a person's memory without a save, it's got such a narrow application that it's hardly broken. You have to really work to make it usable.

If you're playing AL, then it's PHB +1, and even with the unbalanced nonsense in Acq Inc, it's not worth giving up the stuff in XGtE, SCAL, or TCoE. If you're doing a home game, it's much easier to just do a broad limit of "All books EXCEPT Acq Inc and Morty&Rick, though I'm tempted to toss in just about ANY IP-specific Handbook in that ban. As someone that transcribes recorded conversations as part of his job... you'd be surprised how little people ACTUALLY hear what is being said. Your brain is designed to fill in a hell of a lot off blanks based on the general flow of the conversation. That is why I always try to go back and rewatch the video and reach my transcript at the same time. There is often large differences. And it isn't just cute substitutions like beach and -----. It is entire sentences.

This mostly happens, ime, in cases with a time crunch component, like if you have to transcribe something in real time. It's also one of my particular peeves in others; when they just make up things and decide you said them like they weren't really paying attention and just caught stray words here and there. I'd assume I do the same thing, but approximately nobody has ever pointed out me doing it, so I can only assume I either don't, am abnormal in my noticing other people doing it (concerning for various reasons), or do so very rarely.

The perception question being open is actually rather fitting, memory and how humans perceives events is a rather odd thing, and one that is often retroactively or proactively altered by the observers own bias even if it should realisticly make no sense. One of the most chilling observed examples of this was in patients who had special lobotomies to deal with epilepcy and researchers discovered that when visually separated the two hands would perform different tasks if the patient was ask to use them to perform certain tasks such as sketching or writing the answer to an open question. When asked about this the person would be confused for a moment before coming up with various and sometimes conflicting reasoning for why one hand drew a cat and the other drew a duck.
@microwave221 Жыл бұрын
There's a much more mundane example of this that you're probably familiar with, maybe even heard of. Whenever you look at the second hand of a clock, the first tick appears much slower than the rest, almost seemingly frozen for a moment. This happens because when your eyes move to focus on a new target, your brain cuts that part out and sorta fills in the gap retroactively with whatever you are now looking at.
@Leto_05 ай бұрын
To be clear, lobotomies are the severing of the prefrontal cortex, which primarily controls a person's executive functioning. Part of that executive functioning is known as "working memory" in which the prefrontal cortex holds new information and ties it to stored information in the hippocampus, like the RAM of a computer working with a hard drive. You're referring to a corpus callosotomy, where the corpus callosum (the main bridge between the hemispheres) is cut, which greatly reduces the hemispheres' ability to communicate. This doesn't affect your memory. More specifically, it's the neocortex that's split in two. The neocortex is responsible for your conscious behavior: language, movement, and conscious thought. Essentially, this results in two separate brains that can barely communicate, and only through fringe connections. As you probably know, the two sides of the brain perform different functions. The right brain controls the left side of your body, and vice versa, but the right also controls creativity, context, and some aspects of sensory perception and recognition. The left side primarily controls logic and language. CC patients may/will experience disconnection syndrome, either acute (temporary) or chronically. For the acute patients, normal function will be restored in weeks/months, but during that time, they will suffer from severe inability to control parts of their body. They may become incontinent, struggle with spontaneous speech, lose function of their nondominant limbs, even lose the ability to eat and breath on their own. The brain will adapt and reform connections in order to regain a semblance or even complete function. Chronic sufferers may develop similar problems but are unable to adapt. They may lose control of their nondominant hand, lose its function entirely, be unable to consciously sense things on one side, and other strange sensory problems. The _interesting part_ is that both sides of the brain are still functioning, but only the left hemisphere contains the two areas of the brain that control speech. This means your body now hosts two minds, one of which is now essentially deaf and mute :( (although the right will still be able to recognize tone of voice and produce physical communication). Patients naturally feel as if their left brain, controlling logic and language, is their "actual" brain, but both brains are still "you". One will produce language for you to think and say, and the other will seem like a foreign and handicapped part of you. Some patients will maintain some lexicon (your brain's dictionary) in the right hemisphere, so that your right brain may still identify words, but will be unable to produce language outside of gestures with the hand. In many others the poor right brain is now trapped in a world where it can't communicate or even understand words at all. Either way, the conscious part of your left brain that produces language is almost entirely unaware of the conscious part of your right brain that doesn't. This results in things like alien hand syndrome, where the left hand (controlled by the right brain) acts on its own and will do things like grabbing items in the supermarket or smacking someone you secretly dislike. The "You" that can speak is unaware of the "You" that cannot. This is how you have scenarios like items mysteriously appearing in your shopping cart, and your picture example. Your left brain is unaware of what you see out of your left eye and what you do with your left hand. I believe it will just fill in the gaps as best it can, just like how your brain approximates what you see in your peripherals (but I'm not sure and I don't feel like looking up anything else). This means that your left eye can take in information that your left brain is unaware of, and can recall that information through physical communication, such as drawing a picture. This phenomenon is portrayed very well in House, season 5 ep 24. Still my favorite show ^_^

I'm just thinking about the interaction between this and suggestion. The idea is to cast suggestion, and to immediately after cast gift of gab. Theoretically, it would leave the suggestion intact, without the one it was cast on being aware. Essentially, you could cause an NPC to assist the party in a manner that they don't recognize is a suggestion, as the original speaking of the suggestion is erased from memory, but not the actual spell effect. What do you think?
@crowsenpai56253 жыл бұрын
Since Suggestion doesn’t have Somatic Components, this may just work.
@malrok54523 жыл бұрын
Not needed. Unlike Charm Person, there is no indication RAW that target of Suggestion knows that he's been charmed into doing something. The only thing that can give you away is them seeing you casting the spell. So just use Subtle Spell metamagic and you can magicly boss people around without them knowing. Hell, pick Aberrant Mind sorcerer origin for even more power. On 6th level any spells provided by your origin feature (that includes Suggestion) can be cast using sorcery points instead of a spell slot, and they don't require any components, just like Subtle Spell, but without actually using metamagic. What does that mean? That since you are casting a spell without using metamagic, you can ALSO add metamagic on top of that. Heightened Spell and you can suggest people without them knowing, and they have disadvantage on the saving throw, making it very reliable. Twinned Spell, and you can Suggest 2 people at the same time. One of my best characters was Aberrant Mind Changeling specialized in charming people. Since this origin lets you pick bonus spells like Geas or Modify Memory, you can just bend almost every NPC to your will. Another fun combo is Alter Self and Charm Person. No one blames you for fucking with their mind if you look like someone else. Potentially you can Dominate person on shopkeepers to rob them blind while looking as a person you don't like...

they don't need to become resistant. Sometimes magic should be magic, and not just systemic. I get what you mean as an option, but you don't need to balance it and everything. I choose to think that the spell doesn't alter the perception of the old phase, but alters the memory of the spell directly by making it foggy, as though you naturally couldn't remember what they just said. Most people don't try to remember word for word conversations in the near past. And if they do, it is almost indistinguishable from the normal fog of memory. later on in life, this fog is nearly perfect, so missing a six second part of a conversation in memory wouldn't be that out of place, or may just be shortcut by the brain and cut out entirely. Maybe this interpretation could be used in a neat, edge case plot element where someone you interacted with has photographic memory, and thus that particular memory would be one of the few they have missing, and thus could send up a big red flag for possible magical tampering.

Most of the spells don't require additional rules, but they do require a sense of humor about mechanics, which many people don't have. For example, the Royalty Fee material component is one that irks a lot of people. There's also the fact that spells include jokes in the flavor text, which for some reason people read as "cringey" or "immature." This coming from people who have never interpreted the numerous dumb dad jokes in spell components before. Fireball - guano? Because it's batshit crazy. Knock - sesame seeds. "Open sesame" or "Open says me" There are more. Probably my favorite spell in the book is Jim's Magic Missile, which is a reference to Mike Krahulik's 4th Edition Wizard's favorite cantrip.
