vis, i really appreciate you saying that animal crossing is not meant to be played constantly and sped through. the pandemic absolutely changed the way ppl experience animal crossing which i agree is the reason so many ppl burned out on it. i also thought it was so weird ppl complained about acnh not having enough updates even though, by and large, it's the AC game with the most things to do??? ppl need to slow down a little and maybe not see everything as content??? idk. i get why ppl are burned out but i think a lot of their reasons are a bit unfair to the kind of game animal crossing is. thank you for your thoughts, vis!

Yes! I’ve been playing almost daily since launch and have over 1200 hours. My next most played games are around 180 hours (Hades and TOTK). I know everyone’s experience is different but I’ve def gotten way more than my moneys worth

It's not just New Horizons, alot of games both flourished and had their downfall because of covid. Genshin Impact for example. It's also a game that's designed to only be played for an hour or 2 each day, and not CONSISTENTLY for hous on end every day, yet because it came out during covid and No one had anything else better too do, SO many people started playing it and treating like that. The number of complaints towards Genshin for being so "restrained" and "not giving enough to do everything in one day" is so weird to me. It isn't DESIGNED to be completed in one day, and I think so many people really do forget that. It's designed to be played and enjoyed over the course of a longer span of time, but due to the fact it released during covid, so many people have a warped perception of what it SHOULD be, and thereby got entirely burnt out from it. For a generation with a horrible attention span, they seem to crave games they can play endlessly and constantly supply new content, and get so mad that more casual games exist. I'm sure alot of other games are liek this too, but this topic reminds me of genshin specificly because they share an overlap of when they were released.

Tbh I don't think they needed a lot of new updates, but an update once every year or even two years that brings new items, more custom designs, different in game pathing, etc would've been enough to keep the game going STRONG for a long time. Hell, people would've been fiending for changing the aesthetic of the NPC buildings like you would a villager house. The more customization the better, but the amount of hours we spent on the game definitely did contribute to burn out :T

I think that with what you were saying about people getting bored/losing interest in the game and begging for update, is because no matter what the game audience is never. ever. satisfied. Nothing is ever good enough to most players anymore and they're always wanting more and more. It frustrates me so much, I see it with every game, show, movie etc. Like, why can't we just be content and enjoy what we have? Now, ofc this varies game to game, and doesn't include things all games should def have like wide varieties of skin tones. I am just so sick of people complaining about so so much, like go make your own game at this point lmao

i think the burnout thing @23:00 also really speaks to the way content creation and consumption changed during the pandemic rather than the experience of the average player. i feel like the average player didn't get burnt out nearly as much as content creators did or ppl who were consuming a constant stream of animal crossing content. most of the ppl that i saw get burnt out were actually content creators, working themselves to the bone pumping out as many videos as they could trying to keep the attention of their bigger audience thanks to more viewers staying at home. viewers kind of unintentionally(sometimes intentionally, how rude) put a pressure on creators to upload once, if not multiple times per week. for most normal creators that is way too big of a work load. especially if they want to put out high quality content instead of more casual uploads like a lets play for example. crazy how much the pandemic impacted the content creation and media consumption of basically a whole generation.

you're on track with the burnout, but it's also the content creators who tried to pump out timelapse builds and stuff. they were playing far too much without enough items at the time, and they were just getting bored that way. i also understand the gripes people have with missing content. i think they were expecting a sort of, ultimate next gen animal crossing. that's not how animal crossing works, unfortunately. it's bite sized styles of living, and we've already had our city/town games. not to say they won't bring it back, but ww, lgtc, AND nl all had shopping areas/cities to go to. they wanted to mix it up! go back to the roots a bit, i think. being a more secluded, forested place like, well, fl aha. i can say i did have some sort of "burnout" because of depression, and too many ideas to put on my island and i just got overwhelmed that way. i believe the next game may be a bit more like the town games, but maybe as an island with a train line to the mainland you have to unlock? i dunno! it's never going to be the ultimate game, is my point, and some people will never be satisfied because they feel they deserve it after being dedicated fans for so long.

Side note on your DLC point and how buying it would make you love the game. I completely agree with that. The reason I didn't buy the Scarlet and Violet DLC was not only because of funds at the time, but also, I think I've come around to the conclusion that I just didn't enjoy playing that game. I love Pokemon, I loved the story in SV, the new Pokemon were cool, and the fact you could make competitive teams easier was awesome! I just,, didn't love the gameplay experience. I think also the fact Legends Arceus came first and I sunk SO MANY HOURS into it that all I could do while playing SV was compare it to LA spoke enough, I just didn't want to accept how I felt. So yeah, to tie back into Animal Crossing, I agree. Infinite DLC will not save a game if you barely liked it to begin with

tbh i think the only thing i'm really still missing that i'd want an update for is just the villager dialogue tables. new leaf had pretty small dialogue tables also, it's not a new horizons exclusive problem, but just add some more lines and my main complaint would be cured immediately.

Personally, I think if Pocket Camp wasn't a thing, that probably woulda helped ACNH even more. All the nice items got sent to a cruddy mobile game and not to ACNH itself. That's my two cents. I personally haven't seen many that like ACPC. I hope for the future, less focus on ACPC and more focus on the newer game.

The Burnout is because People compare their Islands to others. They want the best, unique designed Island ever, but they get frustrated and some get a burnout cus of it. Island comparison was never that huge and insane with other Animal Crossing Games than NH, it's sick tbh. Btw: 4535Hrs 🧐

i agree 100% with ur new horizons and burnout take. i have adhd, and during quarantine i would literally take adderall and play for 12 hours straight regularly. so im an extreme player example, and i had “burnout,” but only because my island aesthetic just didnt do it for me anymore, not because of the actual game play. i took a break from the game for a year; and in summer 2023, i restarted my island, to play like how i did in wild world, city folk, and new leaf. (granted, i was literally 7 years old when i was playing wild world) i also played new leaf everyday in high school which was like 2016-2020, and i guess i wanted to recreate what i could of that experience in new leaf. now i play consistently like 1.5 hours a day, 3 AT THE MOST when im being donatella versache of animal crossing new horizons mediocre custom designs. i enjoy the game so much more now and yea, theres a lot it lacks in comparison to the old games, but i think i keep coming back to it because of how much creative freedom we have now. like if i want to put my least favorite villager in a jail cell, the only thing stopping me is decorating 30 villager vacation homes

Like there are tree assets in the museum, give us them. Give us some more flower colours. Give us a new path. Give each villager type a new dialogue line. Not letting us even redesign resident services, whatever, I can live without something like that, but there really were a lot of low effort things the devs could’ve done for the community.

Bouncing off Vis' rant about the Immunity Potions on Drag Race, I'd say the twist was a positive for the season because it stirred drama. They could totally bring it back next season in a more refined way to make it impactful. 23:31 I was gonna wait to leave a comment at the end but I just wanted to say this convo is SO REFRESHING to hear. People used to say the exact same things about new leaf that they do now about new horizons, and now people view new leaf way more positively. I remember people hoping that new horizons (pre-launch) would have more dialogue and better villager personalities like the first two games. Honestly, a lot of people's complaints about new horizons remind me of complaints about the sims 4, except I think animal crossing is a MUCH better game at its core. It's design is very intentional and the things it's maybe lacking from other AC games can't be added in updates, they're core elements of the game's identity. Animal Crossing has always been a slow game and we all played it a little too fast. That's no one's fault but I can't hold it against Nintendo either. Do I wish the villagers were a little deeper? Sometimes. But I love decorating so much and seeing my villagers enjoying my island makes me so happy! I don't think adding more "stuff" at this stage would make it any better or worse than it is now. I'm so happy that there's an active community making custom designs and experimenting with items and keeping what we have fresh and new. And this game ended up being an unexpected hit but it will always have a core audience that loves it, even if most people don't play avidly anymore. Unlike the sims 4, where EA will keep pumping out paid and free updates that will never satisfy people, Nintendo gave us a pretty good game. And for those of us who've sunk a thousand hours into it, paying $80 for the base game and DLC has been well worth it. Edit: oh this is DEFINITELY about the sims 😂 no worries you're making perfect sense. And I'm sending you the beautiful spring rain from Atlanta!

I think NH would have definitely lasted longer in terms of relevancy if dlc and updates were consistently produced. I mean if you look at other games in the genre like the Sims and Stardew, they have thriving communities due to there updates and packs. With Stardew's new update a very noticeable uptick in posts and new players coming out because of it.

re burnout i never had the whole staying home during all of corona bc as a tax accountant i was an essential worker ig no wfh either but i still got burnout from playing however i dont play like the average person due to my adhd like i havent touched the game in two years beyond checking in every other month saying hi to everyone and immediately getting bored but yesterday after bingeing ur videos for a week or so straight inspiration finally hit enough to actually play and i played 8h straight same way i played botw and totk from coming home from work up until falling asleep and the whole weekend for weeks even months and then suddenly it wore off and i havent finished either. 🤷🏻‍♀️ so well see how long this lasts same w acnl i pick it up every few years and play straight for days and then i abandon it again lol but yea yesterday i redecorated and changed my island for the first time in over 2 years lmao i just wish theyd given us the whole game from the start instead of drip feeding us content bc yea it still feels like stuff is missing i would also reset my island more often and start fresh but i hate losing my first town/island so i dont and i only have one switch. while for acnl i have 3 game cards one of which being my 2012/13 one i reset only once all the way back then and the other two ive reset several times so i also wish we werent limited to one island per console 🤡

i think a lot of new nh fans don't know that animal crossing wasnt really a game that was delivered live updates which are really a curse on the gaming industry especially for nintendo's first party games but like nl got 1 update really? and that was the only game that really got a big patch?.1;1. because people are meant to discover the features as the game continues. and also i feel like the community is split into people who like are here for a cozy game and people who are here for specifically animal crossing and so with the new farming sim ac-like genre which fills nintendo directs in this day and age it's easy for a lot of the fandomo just move on

I have over 1000 hours in acnl and only 275 in acnh. What you said about people getting bored of the game just from playing it too much doesn't apply to me. If new horizons was as entertaining and had as many features as new leaf, I would've played it way more by now. I was extremely excited for the game, but when I actually started playing it I kept getting disappointed. Some of my favorite furniture wasn't in the game, there was barely anything to do during multiplayer, the shops don't upgrade, the house upgrades aren't as big as new leaf, tools breaking got annoying fast, the music is bland, the water is ugly, the villagers were even more lifeless, and things like swimming and the roost weren't even available at launch. Some npcs like gracie aren't in the game. One thing I really love about new horizons is how they brought back wisp. But that doesn't save the game from being my least favorite animal crossing. It was also really dumb how you live on an island and they didn't add the island fruit from new leaf. It makes no sense. To me the game still feels unfinished. I had more fun playing animal crossing gamecube. I would play that all day and not get bored. Some people say you can't compare acnh with acnl because they're completely different games. But a game in a series should be an improvement from the last game. It shouldn't feel like a downgrade. It's nice to have so many customization options but everything feels so slow. The dlc actually improved it with being able to go into the decorating mode thing outside but that doesn't apply to your actual island. There's also not a reliable way I found to make money. In animal crossing gamecube there was the 30,000 bells code and selling fish and fruit worked well. In acnl going to the island at night was a guaranteed way to make around 300,000-450,000 bells with every trip. In acnh I try to sell fruit, crops, and fossils every day I play and it only gives me around 100,000. This is an issue because I can't consistently do that unless I time travel. I don't like time traveling in this game because you have to do it in the switch settings and it can affect other games. But anyways my point is people have very good reasons for saying acnl is a better game. Your theory is interesting and could explain why a few people say acnh is boring but I don't think think it's true for the majority based on what I've seen. I agree that constant updates and more dlc wouldn't be a good choice, but updates are necessary when the game was released unfinished. 4 years after acnl was released there was the welcome amiibo update which added a bunch of stuff. And 4 years after acnh was released there's no more updates when acnh definitely needed it more.

How did you get 275 hours in a game you think is boring and ugly? Genuinely asking bc ACNH is my most played at over 1200 hours but my next two are around 180 (Hades and TOTK), which is a solid 100 hours less than what you spent playing a game you don’t like, and I genuinely loved them too Edit- fully agree about the tropical/island fruit though. Huge missed opportunity

@@AnaPie896 I don't like acnh compared to other animal crossing games. It could've been way better. I like it more than some other games though. I'm going to try to enjoy playing a game I was extremely excited for from a series I love even if it continues to disappoint me. I want to understand how people can love the game. Also animal crossing games are slow especially acnh so you're going to spend a lot of time playing if you want your island to look decent. It was the first switch game I got since I didn't have a switch until the very end of 2020 so that also contributes to the high play time. Play time doesn't equal enjoyment of a game. For example I love mario kart 8 deluxe a lot and it's probably my favorite switch game but I only have 225 hours in it since mario kart isn't the kind of game that you can play everyday for hours because of the lack of variety in ways to play. My most played switch game is splatoon 3 with 455 hours because it has so many things to do and spend time on. I think splatoon 3 is an amazing game but I like mario kart more and have less hours in it. Also compared to the other animal crossing games I played 275 is very low. That's less than half of the time I spent on acnl and there's no way for me to check my time on gamecube games but I know I spent a very long time playing animal crossing gamecube because I would play it all day sometimes and play almost every day for a while. I can't do that with acnh or I'll get bored. I really think a detail like having good hourly songs would've affected how much I like the game. Sorry this is long I have a lot of things to say about animal crossing and I wanted to fully explain everything

@@morpheel no apologies needed! I fully appreciate your explanation and it actually makes perfect sense to me. I guess it would be how I feel about BOTW vs TOTK. I played BOTW on the WiiU lmao, but I definitely played it for way way longer than Tears (I think over 600 hours) and thought overall it was a better more enjoyable game. That didn’t stop me from playing Tears for a while or even enjoying it but if someone asked me to rank them it would not compare. Tbf new horizons was my first animal crossing game. I love talking to my villagers (sometimes it gets stale but I’m still finding new dialog even now and I try to have 1 of each personality type), walking around aimlessly picking weeds, trying to get all the flower colors to breed, etc. I finished my museum and am trying to catalog everything in game. I also have a disability that causes my hands to shake which makes it hard for me to paint, which used to be my main hobby, so the decorating part gives me a creative outlet when I’m unable to paint. Trying to create beautiful islands that are still walkable and playable has been a fun challenge for me. I think maybe if I had played new leaf I’d feel differently, and I really hope the next game strikes a balance between what the fan base loved about the old games and the new decorating mechanisms of this one. Also I think you’ve convinced me to go try to play new leaf, so thanks haha

@@AnaPie896 Yeah botw was seen as such an amazing game because it was a completely new direction for the zelda series. So I understand why you don't like totk as much. I actually liked totk more just because you can explore more, theres more enemy variation, the "dungeons" were more fun, and I don't have to worry about getting jumpscared by guardians. The gloom hands are terrifying, probably even more scary than a guardian, but I think they're also a lot cooler because of the second phase and you won't expect them to spawn unless you know all the spawn points. I also think the shrines are more interesting. But it also feels extremely similar to botw. It's kind of like how majoras mask is so similar to oot and its a sequel, but majoras mask at least takes place in a completely different world. The villagers in the gamecube animal crossing are really evil. I think you would definitely like new leaf. But sadly the 3ds internet ends tomorrow so a lot of the good features will be gone. New leaf has amazing multiplayer. Hopefully someone will make some kind of online server so people will be able to experience it for longer. New leaf has an online island where you can meet people, exchange fcs, do tours, or just do fun stuff together like filling the whole island with holes. It was really fun. New horizons could've definitely benefitted from having a feature like that. I also like the design creator more in new leaf because it keeps the design pixelated rather than smoothing it out and making certain colors blend together weird. You don't get as many options for the type of dresses/shirts but you can change the sleeve length which is nice. Having retail in your town is very convenient too. New horizons definitely has much better customization features. If you like crafting, changing the layout of the town, and placing items outside you'll probably be kind of disappointed at first. But if you hack your 3ds you can do cool stuff like put bamboo in rivers. Outside decorating is extremely limited. You can put public works project and signs/standees outside and you unlock pwps by random encounters with villagers. Sometimes it can be more fun if you have less control over what you can currently do since trying to unlock everything will give you a reason to play. You might like happy home designer too if you like decorating the houses. I haven't played it but I think its very similar to the acnh dlc. It's nice that you're able to use animal crossing to be creative. I'm not sure if you like farming games but harvest moon a new beginning has blueprints of items/buildings you can make and I'm pretty sure there's a festival in the game where it judges an area of your farm based on how its decorated. You can choose where to put houses and I think some decorations in the town. The blueprints are kind of like diy recipes. And since it's a harvest moon game you can marry people if you're interested in that. I thought it was really fun when I played it. I would also recommend the gamcube animal crossing if you're able to play it through emulation. There's a lot less customization options in that game but it's cool to see how much the series changed. I think it has the best ost out of any animal crossing game
